SM-R1: Hazardous Materials Elimination<br />

Intent To eliminate exposure of building occupants to asbestos and minimize toxic effects of<br />

chromated copper arsenate (CCA) treated timber on people and the environment.<br />

GENERAL<br />

Demonstrate that no Asbestos Containing Materials (ACMs) are used within the<br />

development and that all ACMs have been removed from refurbished buildings.<br />

This Credit Requirement builds on Cabinet Resolution No. 39 of 2006 Concerning<br />

Prohibiting Import, Production and Utilization of Asbestos Boards and extends the<br />

prohibition to all ACMs.<br />

Demonstrate that where timber is specified to treat external structures where there is<br />

frequent and intimate contact, such as –but not limited to- shading devices,<br />

playground equipment and handrails that no chromated copper arsenate (CCA)-treated<br />

timber is used on the project.<br />

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT/CLARIFICATIONS<br />

None<br />

This is a requirement. There are no Credit Points awarded.<br />

� Extracts from specifications indicating that no ACMs or CCA-treated timber are to<br />

be used in the project as per the Credit Requirements.<br />

Where portions of the project are reused from an existing building:<br />

� Results of a hazardous materials survey documenting the existence, if any, of ACMs<br />

in the building. It is recommended to follow internationally recognized standards<br />

such as ASTM E 256-04 – Comprehensive <strong>Building</strong> Asbestos Surveys or similar<br />

standards; and<br />

� Where ACMs were found, Asbestos removal and disposal plan.<br />

� Evidence of purchase indicating that no ACMs or CCA-treated timber were used in<br />

the project as per the Credit Requirements.<br />

Where portions of the project are reused from an existing building:<br />

� Where ACMs were found, evidence of disposal at a hazardous waste facility.<br />
