SM-1: Non-Polluting Materials
Intent To promote the selection of materials that do not have long-term negative impacts on
human health or pollute natural systems.
Credit
Requirements
GENERAL
Demonstrate that the project has achieved the following:
Zero ODP, Low GWP Insulation
 1 Credit Point: All thermal insulation materials used in the project have an Ozone
Depleting Potential of zero (ODP = 0) and a low Global Warming Potential of less
than five (GWP 5). Compliance is required for any blowing agent used to
manufacture the insulation product or to spray it in place.
Chlorine Free Materials
 1 Credit Point: Replace ‘business as usual’ use of chlorine-based materials
including Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), Chlorinated polyethylene (CPE), Chlorinated
polyvinyl chloride (CPVC), Chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSPE), and
Polychloroprene with more sustainable alternatives for three or more of the
following building product groups (The proportions required are indicated below):
o Insulation (80% or more by surface area);
o Waterproofing sheets and membranes (50% or more by surface area);
o External cladding (90% or more by surface area);
o Floor and wall coverings (90% or more by surface area);
o Windows and door frames (90% or more by linear length);
o Pipes (50% or more by linear length); and
o Electrical Cables, cable sheathing and Conduits (50% or more by linear
length).
Low Toxicity Materials
 1 Credit Point: Eliminate materials or building products or components
containing elements or compounds with the following R-phrase attribution under
EU Risk Phrases (R-Phrases) listed in Annex III of EU Directives 67/548/EEC:
o R20 - Harmful by inhalation.
o R21 - Harmful in contact with skin.
o R22 - Harmful if swallowed.
o R23 - Toxic by inhalation.
o R24 - Toxic in contact with skin.
o R25 - Toxic if swallowed.
o R26 - Very toxic by inhalation.
o R27 - Very toxic in contact with skin.
o R28 - Very toxic if swallowed.
o R29 - Contact with water liberates toxic gas.
o R31 - Contact with acids liberates toxic gas.
o R32 - Contact with acids liberates very toxic gas.
o R33 - Danger of cumulative effects.
o R36 - Irritating to eyes.
o R37 - Irritating to respiratory system.
o R38 - Irritating to skin.
o R39 - Danger of very serious irreversible effects.
o R41 - Risk of serious damage to eyes.
o R42 - May cause sensitization by inhalation.
o R43 - May cause sensitization by skin contact.
