GENERAL<br />

Demonstrate that an Operational Waste Strategy has been developed from the concept<br />

stage. As a minimum, the following must be addressed by the design and development<br />

team:<br />

� Annual estimates of Operational waste;<br />

� Summary review of existing and planned waste management infrastructure and<br />

programs available from the appropriate authority;<br />

� Proposed options for diverting waste from landfills and incineration with a<br />

minimum targeted diversion rate of 40% by weight or volume of the total<br />

operational waste generated at full occupancy;<br />

� Provision of adequately sized and accessible facilities and clearly labeled<br />

containers for the storage and collection of source-segregated waste as<br />

recommended by the Centre of Waste Management. At a minimum, allow for<br />

separation as follows:<br />

o Green container for recyclable plastics, glass and metals;<br />

o Blue container for recyclable paper and cardboard;<br />

o Black container for non recyclable and non compostable waste; and<br />

o An optional container may be provided for compostable organic waste;<br />

� Distance to carry waste containers to the nearest collection point inside or outside<br />

the building may not exceed 30 m; and<br />

� Adequate vehicular access for waste handling vehicles must also be ensured.<br />

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENT/CLARIFICATIONS<br />

Multi-Residential <strong>Building</strong>s<br />

The minimum targeted diversion rate for Operational Waste is 30% by weight or volume<br />

of the total operational waste generated at full occupancy.<br />

This is a requirement. There are no Credit Points awarded.<br />

Operational Waste Strategy that includes:<br />

� Narrative summarizing options researched and selected to meet the diversion<br />

targets. The strategy must address waste minimization, storage, collection, and<br />

treatment and links to private or municipal and regional infrastructure and<br />

programs;<br />

� Calculations documenting projected waste quantities for the development during<br />

operation on an annual basis. Waste benchmarks may be obtained from the Centre<br />

of Waste Management, waste audits of similar buildings or literature research.<br />

References must be clearly listed;<br />

� Drawing(s) indicating location of the storage/disposal facilities and vehicle access<br />

areas designed to ensure adequate space for maneuvering delivery and waste<br />

removal vehicles; and<br />

� Waste transfer inventory outlining the intended receiver of waste. This should<br />

include information indicating that the carrier, recycling and disposal facilities are<br />

licensed.<br />

� Updated calculations documenting projected waste quantities for the development<br />

during operation on an annual basis;<br />

� As-built drawing(s) and photographs indicating location of the storage/disposal<br />
