Calculati<strong>on</strong> of pesticide<br />
intake <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> food products<br />
<strong>and</strong> drinking water <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Danish market<br />
Methods of calculati<strong>on</strong><br />
108<br />
pears, grapes <strong>and</strong> strawberries, which account for most of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> load.<br />
However, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sum of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se substances covers pesticide residues with very<br />
different toxicological properties, so <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> substances are not directly<br />
comparable <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir combined acti<strong>on</strong> is not known. The Ministry of<br />
Food, Agriculture <strong>and</strong> Fisheries has initiated a study that will throw light<br />
<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se questi<strong>on</strong>s within some years. Ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r important factor in<br />
c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> summati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticide residues in food products<br />
is that it does not include reducti<strong>on</strong> factors. Some of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticide<br />
residues are removed during preparati<strong>on</strong> - for example, peeling of<br />
oranges, m<strong>and</strong>arins, etc., <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> peel of which is seldom used. However,<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are as yet insufficient data to clarify <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> size of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reducti<strong>on</strong> factors<br />
in Danish diet. This aspect will also be looked at in a new study initiated<br />
by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Ministry of Food, Agriculture <strong>and</strong> Fisheries. A closer comparis<strong>on</strong><br />
of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> individual food products <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir significance for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> intake of<br />
pesticides, <strong>and</strong> thus <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir possible toxic effects, is difficult for several<br />
reas<strong>on</strong>s, including <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fact that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> data are often too limited, but also<br />
because <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> individual pesticides have different toxicological properties.<br />
It must be menti<strong>on</strong>ed, however, that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> higher detecti<strong>on</strong> rate in imported<br />
crops reflects <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fact that, for comparable crops, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re tend to be fewer<br />
positive results in Danish products than in imported <strong>on</strong>es. This tendency<br />
is most pr<strong>on</strong>ounced for crops like tomatoes, cucumber <strong>and</strong> peppers,<br />
which are greenhouse crops in Denmark but outdoor crops in o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />
countries. However, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> tendency does not apply to all crops. There are<br />
also examples, e.g. blackcurrants, where pesticide residues are more<br />
frequent in Danish crops than in imported <strong>on</strong>es.<br />
The following calculati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Danes’ intake of pesticides through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir<br />
diet is based <strong>on</strong> m<strong>on</strong>itoring data <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Danish Veterinary & Food<br />
Administrati<strong>on</strong>’s nati<strong>on</strong>al m<strong>on</strong>itoring programme in 1996 <strong>and</strong> 1997<br />
(Büchert 1998). These data are not <strong>on</strong>ly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> latest data but were also<br />
obtained with comparable methods <strong>and</strong> reporting limits. It is<br />
characteristic that no c<strong>on</strong>tent was detected in most of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> samples tested.<br />
Regardless of this, it must be assumed that treated crops always have a<br />
certain residual c<strong>on</strong>tent, so that lack of detecti<strong>on</strong> can <strong>on</strong>ly be taken to<br />
mean that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tent, if any, is below <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> analytical detecti<strong>on</strong> limit.<br />
Different models can be used to calculate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticide intake <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> crops<br />
in which no residual c<strong>on</strong>tent has been detected. In situati<strong>on</strong>s in which<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are sufficient data above <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> detecti<strong>on</strong> limit, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> distributi<strong>on</strong> under<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> detecti<strong>on</strong> limit can be determined with reas<strong>on</strong>able statistical<br />
certainty. Unfortunately, that is not <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> case with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> available<br />
m<strong>on</strong>itoring data. The residual c<strong>on</strong>tent in samples without a detected<br />
c<strong>on</strong>tent must <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore be expressed in a different way – for example, by<br />
putting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticide c<strong>on</strong>tent at 0 (zero) or, c<strong>on</strong>versely, by assuming that<br />
it corresp<strong>on</strong>ds to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> detecti<strong>on</strong> limit. However, both are ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r rough<br />
approximati<strong>on</strong>s.<br />
In this c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> it must be stressed that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> analytical detecti<strong>on</strong> limit is<br />
not a fixed quantity. It varies <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>e pesticide to ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> crop<br />
to crop, just as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is a variati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>e analysis to ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
same substance in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same crop. However, since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> exact data are not<br />
directly accessible, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> calculati<strong>on</strong>s are based <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> more general<br />
detecti<strong>on</strong> limits, which are determined for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> individual substances<br />
during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> validati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> methods. The residual c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> in
