Measurements of<br />

volatilisati<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

laboratory <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> field<br />

In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> case of many pesticides, most of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticide that l<strong>and</strong>s <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

ground can in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ory evaporate within a few days, depending <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

climatic c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s. Volatilisati<strong>on</strong> increases with rising temperature <strong>and</strong><br />

wind velocity. If <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> relative humidity is low, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ground surface dries<br />

out, which reduces volatilisati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Little is known about volatilisati<strong>on</strong> of pesticides <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> plants. High<br />

relative humidity increases <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> volatilisati<strong>on</strong> but can at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same time<br />

increase <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> absorpti<strong>on</strong> of a pesticide by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> plant. Once <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticide has<br />

penetrated <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> plant, 95% of it remains <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re. The volatilisati<strong>on</strong> depends<br />

<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> species of plant, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> amount of foliage per unit of area <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

nature of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> surfaces of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> plant. The spraying technique <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

coformulants in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticide formulati<strong>on</strong> also play a part. These<br />

substances are intended to ensure that pesticides are spread <strong>and</strong> attach to<br />

<strong>and</strong> penetrate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> plant. The ancillary substances can thus help reduce<br />

volatilisati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> thus increase <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> substances acti<strong>on</strong> time in <strong>and</strong> <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

plant. Volatilisati<strong>on</strong> is greatest <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> small droplets, which have <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

relatively largest surface, <strong>and</strong> least <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> large droplets, partly because<br />

absorpti<strong>on</strong> by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> plant is greatest <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> large droplets. The Dutch<br />

authorities have estimated that about 20% of a sprayed pesticide<br />

evaporates <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> plant surfaces <strong>and</strong> is transported to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> atmosphere<br />

(Ministerie van L.N.V. 1991).<br />

There have been many foreign studies of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> volatilisati<strong>on</strong> of pesticides.<br />

Most of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m were carried out more than 10 years ago with pesticides<br />

that are no l<strong>on</strong>ger used in Denmark. Jansma <strong>and</strong> Linders (1995) have<br />

reviewed data <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> literature. It appears <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir work that both <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

herbicide DNOC <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> chlorinated insecticide lindane, which have<br />

been detected in rainwater in Denmark (see secti<strong>on</strong> 4.1.5), evaporate very<br />

quickly <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> plant surfaces. In German field tests with different crops, it<br />

was found, for example, that 45% of lindane evaporated <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> green<br />

beans within <strong>on</strong>e hour of spraying, 50% <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> lettuce, 30% <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> kohlrabi<br />

<strong>and</strong> 25% <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> spring wheat (Boehncke et al.1990). After 3.1 days, 88%<br />

had evaporated <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spring wheat <strong>and</strong> more than 90% <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

crops. In several studies, measurements of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> volatilisati<strong>on</strong> of lindane<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ground showed a lower rate of volatilisati<strong>on</strong> but still so much<br />

that most of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sprayed pesticide was transported to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> atmosphere.<br />

Measurements exist of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> volatilisati<strong>on</strong> of individual substances<br />

included in measurements of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tent of pesticides in Danish<br />

rainwater. The substances include atrazine <strong>and</strong> simazine.<br />

For atrazine, measurements in field studies in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> USA have shown that<br />

up to 9% can evaporate <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ground surface in 35 days. In ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />

study, 1.3% of simazine evaporated <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ground within 21 days.<br />

Measurements of volatilisati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ground of substances now in use<br />

in Nor<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rn Europe, showed up to 49% of chlorpyrifos after 26 days, up<br />

to 52% of deltamethrin after 3.1 days <strong>and</strong> 90% of trifluralin after 2.5-7<br />

days. Field tests in Germany of volatilisati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> insecticide<br />

deltamethrin after 3.1 days showed 72% <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> green beans, 34% <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

kohlrabi, 70% <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> lettuce <strong>and</strong> 24% <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> spring wheat (Boehncke et al.<br />

1990). The same authors measured up to 100% volatilisati<strong>on</strong> of<br />

mevinphos <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> plants after 3.1 days.<br />
