Basic need for knowledge<br />
models. The results of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se research activities can be expected to<br />
become available in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> next couple of years.<br />
There are four reas<strong>on</strong>s why it has not been possible to identify <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
pesticides authorised for use today that present <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> greatest threat to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
groundwater:<br />
1) It is not certain that we properly underst<strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> main processes<br />
resp<strong>on</strong>sible for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> transport of pesticides down to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> groundwater –<br />
e.g. <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> importance of preferential flow.<br />
2) We have <strong>on</strong>ly limited underst<strong>and</strong>ing of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> variati<strong>on</strong> in a number of<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> main parameters (e.g. degradati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> adsorpti<strong>on</strong> in soil) included<br />
in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> descripti<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> leaching of pesticides to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> groundwater.<br />
3) There is a lack of recognised methods for rapidly assessing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
leachability of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> individual substances.<br />
4) There is a lack of data for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> different models – particularly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
complicated models such as MACRO.<br />
1) Need for more knowledge about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> geological factors<br />
In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last few years a lot of new knowledge has been gained about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
main processes of pesticide leaching to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> groundwater. However, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
results indicate that we have insufficient underst<strong>and</strong>ing of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spatial<br />
variati<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> hydraulic parameters that govern <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> transport of<br />
pesticides <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ploughing layer to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> groundwater. We need to<br />
translate <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> knowledge gained c<strong>on</strong>cerning <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> flow in structured soils<br />
into a quantitative mapping of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> geographical extent of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se<br />
properties.<br />
2) Need for more knowledge about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> individual pesticides<br />
Despite <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>siderable resources that have g<strong>on</strong>e into research activities<br />
aimed at increasing our general underst<strong>and</strong>ing of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> transport of<br />
pesticides down to <strong>and</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> groundwater, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are a number of vital<br />
problems that remain to be answered in relati<strong>on</strong> to risk assessment of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
individual pesticides. One of those problems is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> variati<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
parameters that are important in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> descripti<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> individual<br />
pesticides.<br />
• Variati<strong>on</strong> in degradati<strong>on</strong> paths <strong>and</strong> rates, <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> substances’<br />
adsorpti<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ploughing layer, which can vary c<strong>on</strong>siderably, both<br />
within <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> individual field <strong>and</strong> between different fields.<br />
• Variati<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se parameters down through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> soil profile. Analyses<br />
carried out in soil <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ploughing layer do not necessarily<br />
describe <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fate of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> substances when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y get down below <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
ploughing layer.<br />
• The informati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> possible metabolites <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> individual<br />
substances is insufficient. It is not enough to know <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> degradati<strong>on</strong><br />
paths in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ploughing layer. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> case of relatively mobile<br />
substances, it is also important to know <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> degradati<strong>on</strong> paths in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
subsoil <strong>and</strong> possibly in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> groundwater.<br />
This informati<strong>on</strong> can be procured in future by tightening <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
requirements for authorisati<strong>on</strong> of pesticides, but this method will <strong>on</strong>ly<br />
