++scenario: reduced use of<br />
pesticides<br />
Treatment frequency index<br />
in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> five scenarios<br />
• chemical c<strong>on</strong>trol of couch grass in 1 out of 10 years, combined with<br />
mechanical c<strong>on</strong>trol<br />
• c<strong>on</strong>trolling pois<strong>on</strong>ous weed species such as spring groundsel in<br />
greenfeed<br />
• combating aphids when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> damage threshold has been exceeded in<br />
cereals <strong>and</strong> peas<br />
• combating snails <strong>and</strong> flea beetles in rape when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> damage threshold<br />
has been exceeded<br />
• combating clover weevil in clover seed producti<strong>on</strong><br />
• combating diseases <strong>and</strong> pests in fruit producti<strong>on</strong>, assessed <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> basis<br />
of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> level of attack<br />
• combating diseases <strong>and</strong> pests in vegetables, assessed <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> basis of<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> level of attack<br />
• for desiccati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> preventi<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trol of fungi in garden seed<br />
crops.<br />
In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> third scenario with reduced use of pesticides, serious ec<strong>on</strong>omic<br />
losses <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> pests are not envisaged. Producti<strong>on</strong> is similar to present<br />
producti<strong>on</strong>. The scenario is based <strong>on</strong> a proposal <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Danish Institute<br />
of Agricultural Sciences, which c<strong>on</strong>sidered in 1996 that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re was a<br />
realistic possibility of reducing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> treatment frequency index without<br />
that affecting present farm-level ec<strong>on</strong>omy.<br />
In this scenario it is assumed that all available damage thresholds are<br />
used, toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r with mechanical weed c<strong>on</strong>trol, where <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se methods can<br />
compete with chemical methods. A crop rotati<strong>on</strong> very similar to that<br />
practised today can be expected, with ec<strong>on</strong>omic optimisati<strong>on</strong> but also<br />
optimisati<strong>on</strong> with respect to minimising use of pesticides.<br />
The 1994 treatment frequency index (Envir<strong>on</strong>mental Protecti<strong>on</strong> Agency<br />
1995b) has been chosen as <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> index in present producti<strong>on</strong>. Figure 10.1<br />
shows <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> expected treatment frequency index in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> different scenarios<br />
as a nati<strong>on</strong>al average for agricultural l<strong>and</strong>.<br />
