The scope of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

calculati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

Variati<strong>on</strong>s in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

populati<strong>on</strong><br />

The distributi<strong>on</strong> between<br />

Danish <strong>and</strong> imported food<br />

products<br />

samples with c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s above <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> detecti<strong>on</strong> limit are estimated as<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> mean value between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> highest <strong>and</strong> lowest detected c<strong>on</strong>tent.<br />

The calculati<strong>on</strong>s of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tent in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> crops analysed have been carried<br />

out for all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides detected in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> analyses in 1996 <strong>and</strong> 1997. It was<br />

anticipated that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re was a c<strong>on</strong>tent in both Danish <strong>and</strong> foreign crops of<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same type, also when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> substance was <strong>on</strong>ly detected in crops of <strong>on</strong>e<br />

or <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r origin. There is also an overestimati<strong>on</strong>, in that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

calculati<strong>on</strong>s are based <strong>on</strong> an assumpti<strong>on</strong> that detecti<strong>on</strong> of a pesticide in a<br />

single type of crop means that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> entire producti<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> crop in<br />

questi<strong>on</strong> has been treated with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticide in questi<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore has<br />

a residual c<strong>on</strong>tent of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticide that differs <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> 0.<br />

The calculati<strong>on</strong>s do not take into account intake of pesticides that have<br />

not been detected in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> nati<strong>on</strong>al m<strong>on</strong>itoring programme in ei<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r Danish<br />

or imported crops, nor do <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y include any intake of such substances as<br />

might occur in c<strong>on</strong>tents below <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> analytical detecti<strong>on</strong> limits or that are<br />

not covered by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> analytical methods used.<br />

In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> calculati<strong>on</strong> of Danish c<strong>on</strong>sumers’ exposure to pesticide residues<br />

through food, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> crops’ estimated c<strong>on</strong>tent is multiplied by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> average<br />

daily dietary c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> crop in questi<strong>on</strong>. The dietary data used<br />

are based <strong>on</strong> diet studies <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1985 <strong>and</strong> 1995 <strong>and</strong> <strong>on</strong> trade statistics.<br />

In practice, of course, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are many deviati<strong>on</strong>s in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> populati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> average diet model with respect to sex, age, ethnic background <strong>and</strong><br />

social c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s. For a more detailed risk analysis for such groups <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re<br />

is thus a need for more precise dietary data. However, it must be stressed<br />

that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> model set up provides a reas<strong>on</strong>able possibility of a more general<br />

evaluati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticide intake <strong>on</strong> a nati<strong>on</strong>al level, including <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

broader significance of keeping Danish crops free of pesticide treatment.<br />

Good data <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> distributi<strong>on</strong> of Danish c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> between Danish<br />

<strong>and</strong> imported crops are not available. The main reas<strong>on</strong> for that is, that<br />

with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> "internal market", official statistics are no l<strong>on</strong>ger kept of imports<br />

<strong>and</strong> exports between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Member States. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> calculati<strong>on</strong>s carried out,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> distributi<strong>on</strong> has been estimated <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> basis of earlier trade figures<br />

<strong>and</strong> agricultural statistics. These indicate that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> distributi<strong>on</strong> between<br />

imports <strong>and</strong> domestic producti<strong>on</strong> is 1:1 for such fruit as apples, pears,<br />

plums, berries, etc., while exotic fruit, such as citrus fruit <strong>and</strong> kiwi are<br />

exclusively imported crops. For vegetables, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> distributi<strong>on</strong> is about 1:4,<br />

although not for cucumber, tomatoes <strong>and</strong> similar, where imports,<br />

distributed over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> whole year, account for about 70% of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> total<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong>. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> case of cereals, maize <strong>and</strong> rice are exclusively<br />

imported crops, while <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> of barley is based entirely <strong>on</strong><br />

Danish products. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> case of rye, wheat <strong>and</strong> oats, 5%, 20% <strong>and</strong> 65%,<br />

respectively, of c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> is covered by imports.<br />

Table 6.2 shows <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> average daily c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> of Danish <strong>and</strong> imported<br />

cereal <strong>and</strong> cereal products in Denmark.<br />
