In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beet crop rotati<strong>on</strong>, as shown in figure 10.8, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> calculati<strong>on</strong>s show<br />
that, with a starting point of 6,900 seeds per square metre, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> seed pool<br />
would remain largely unchanged for 25 years in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> +scenario, in which<br />
mechanical weed c<strong>on</strong>trol is combined with limited use of herbicides. For<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> larger seed pool of 22,000 seeds per square metre, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re would be a<br />
fall in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> seed pool after 25 years. After <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>on</strong>e year in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scenario<br />
without treatment, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> seed pool would reach its maximum of 60,000 <strong>and</strong><br />
95,000 seeds, respectively, per square metre with a starting seed pool of<br />
6,900 <strong>and</strong> 22,000 seeds. That is because beets in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> model have very<br />
poor competitiveness, enabling wild plants to proliferate. The average<br />
seed pool of approx. 40,000 <strong>and</strong> approx. 44,000, respectively, would<br />
adjust itself after a couple of years <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>n fluctuate in step with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
change in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> crop rotati<strong>on</strong>. In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> +scenario, in which chemical c<strong>on</strong>trol<br />
of couch grass is <strong>on</strong>ly carried out every ten years, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re would be<br />
problems with couch grass. With both starting points for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> seed pool,<br />
couch grass would reach its biggest biomass of each individual year <strong>on</strong> 1<br />
June in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> +scenario, since it would largely avoid competiti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r seed weed in this scenario. The scenario without any weed c<strong>on</strong>trol<br />
would not be feasible in practice.
