In table 4.16, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> measured c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> of pesticide chemicals <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
table 4.15 is c<strong>on</strong>verted <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> microgramme per litre to gramme per ha. In<br />
this analysis, which does not cover all volatile pesticides, DNOC (4,6dinitro-2-methylphenol)<br />
c<strong>on</strong>stitutes just under 90% of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> total quantity<br />
of pesticide chemicals in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> atmospheric depositi<strong>on</strong> with rainwater. The<br />
distributi<strong>on</strong> of phenols <strong>and</strong> nitrophenols in clouds <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> occurrence <strong>and</strong><br />
formati<strong>on</strong> of phenols in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> atmosphere have been described by Lüttke<br />
<strong>and</strong> Levsen (1997) <strong>and</strong> Lüttke et al. (1997). It is c<strong>on</strong>cluded in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se<br />
studies that DNOC occurs mainly in gaseous form ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r than in liquid<br />
form in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> atmosphere. Dinitrophenols are mainly formed through<br />
reacti<strong>on</strong>s in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> atmosphere, unlike m<strong>on</strong><strong>on</strong>itrophenols, which are<br />
primarily formed in c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with exhaust fumes <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> cars.<br />
4.5.1 C<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s<br />
Pesticide chemicals have been detected in precipitati<strong>on</strong> collected in<br />
Denmark. The study was limited <strong>and</strong> covered <strong>on</strong>ly a few substances <strong>and</strong><br />
not those with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> highest potential for volatilisati<strong>on</strong>. In most cases, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re<br />
was a relati<strong>on</strong>ship between <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> spraying seas<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> time of detecti<strong>on</strong>.<br />
However, pesticides that are no l<strong>on</strong>ger used in Denmark were also<br />
detected. These substances were presumably transported here over l<strong>on</strong>g<br />
distances or originated <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r sources than treatment with pesticides<br />
in agriculture. The prohibited substances found in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> precipitati<strong>on</strong><br />
included DNOC, which was found in rainwater throughout <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> year <strong>and</strong><br />
in by far <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> highest c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s am<strong>on</strong>g <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> substances analysed for. It<br />
is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore highly likely that its presence is due primarily to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
formati<strong>on</strong> of nitrophenols in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> atmosphere. The internati<strong>on</strong>al literature<br />
describes <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> formati<strong>on</strong> of nitrophenols in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> atmosphere as a reacti<strong>on</strong><br />
between benzene, toluene <strong>and</strong> NOx. The exhaust fumes <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> cars c<strong>on</strong>tain<br />
