In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> +scenario, a number of species of wild flora could occur more<br />
frequently. A more varied plant community could <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore be expected,<br />
providing food resources for a more varied animal community<br />
(invertebrates <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir predators). However, in view of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> poor<br />
competitiveness of beets, this crop rotati<strong>on</strong> would hardly be profitable<br />
unless new, alternative methods were found for c<strong>on</strong>trolling weed in beet<br />
crops.<br />
In <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> rape crop rotati<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> results of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> calculati<strong>on</strong>s of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> seed pool<br />
are shown in figure 10.9. It will be seen that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> seed pool would increase<br />
over 25 years if no form of weed c<strong>on</strong>trol were practised. On <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r<br />
h<strong>and</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> +scenario shows a distinct fall in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> number of seeds in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
seed pool after 25 years compared with present producti<strong>on</strong> after 25 years,<br />
whe<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> starting point is 6,900 or 22,000 seeds. One reas<strong>on</strong> for this is<br />
that chemical agents have little effect <strong>on</strong> shepherd's purse, which occurs<br />
in this crop rotati<strong>on</strong>, whereas mechanical c<strong>on</strong>trol is more effective<br />
(Kjellss<strong>on</strong>, Madsen 1998b).<br />
