Better m<strong>on</strong>itoring of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

additi<strong>on</strong>, all <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> substances could be run through MACRO after it has<br />
been decided what data <strong>and</strong> scenarios are relevant.<br />
The examinati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ranking methods also showed:<br />
• that, in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> case of 9 pesticides, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re was not complete laboratory<br />
data for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir adsorpti<strong>on</strong> to soil or degradati<strong>on</strong> in soil<br />
• that leachable metabolites are not included as part of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> basis for<br />
ranking in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> methods studied, except for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> expert assessment<br />
• that, with a view to reviewing pesticides’ leaching, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> gross list can<br />
be included in recommendati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> substituti<strong>on</strong> with less dangerous<br />
substances in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> treatment situati<strong>on</strong>.<br />
To clarify <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> extent to which <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use of pesticides threatens our<br />
groundwater resources, a number of activities have been initiated in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
last few years, partly to determine <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> extent to which our groundwater is<br />
affected by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides authorised for use today <strong>and</strong> partly to clarify<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> more fundamental problems relating to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> risk assessment. In order<br />
to learn more about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> leaching of pesticides to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> groundwater, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
countrywide m<strong>on</strong>itoring programmes for groundwater (LOOP <strong>and</strong><br />
GRUMO) have been c<strong>on</strong>siderably exp<strong>and</strong>ed. The results of this will<br />
begin to emerge in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> middle of 2000.<br />
The groundwater analysed is mainly more than five years old <strong>and</strong> often<br />
more than 25 years old. Feedback cannot occur before substantial parts of<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> groundwater resources must be presumed to be affected if <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
authorised pesticides or <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir metabolites leach to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> groundwater.<br />
GEUS, DIAS, DEPA <strong>and</strong> DMU must toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r plan <strong>and</strong> establish a<br />
warning system that m<strong>on</strong>itors young groundwater for pesticides that are<br />
used under <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> current rules. The warning system must make it possible<br />
to assess quickly <strong>and</strong> possibly remove authorised pesticides if, with<br />
lawful use under Danish c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y prove able to leach to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
groundwater in c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s that exceed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> limit value. The first<br />
results are expected to become available in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sec<strong>on</strong>d half of 2000.<br />
Do we underst<strong>and</strong> properly <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> transport of pesticides <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ploughing<br />
layer down to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> groundwater <strong>and</strong> <strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> extracti<strong>on</strong> wells? As <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
results <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> m<strong>on</strong>itoring programmes have emerged over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last 10<br />
years, showing that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> groundwater is polluted with pesticides, several<br />
different hypo<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ses have been advanced <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> reas<strong>on</strong>s for this: <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y<br />
include preferential flow, colloidal transport or <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> right descripti<strong>on</strong> of<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> degradati<strong>on</strong> process of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> individual substances. To achieve greater<br />
underst<strong>and</strong>ing of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se problems, a number of research activities have<br />
been initiated, including The Danish Envir<strong>on</strong>mental Research<br />
Programme (SMP96): “Pesticides <strong>and</strong> Groundwater”, which runs <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
1996 to 2000, <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Interministerial Pesticide Research Programme,<br />
1995-1998. Activities under SMP96 will shed light <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> importance of<br />
preferential flow for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> transport of pesticides in structured soil <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
ploughing layer down to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> groundwater, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> transport <strong>and</strong> metabolism<br />
of pesticides in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> groundwater itself, <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> possibilities of describing<br />
