Some of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> calls c<strong>on</strong>cerned parathi<strong>on</strong>, which has not been used<br />

professi<strong>on</strong>ally for many years. In two thirds of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> cases, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> accident<br />

occurred in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> home or garden, 12% occurred within farming <strong>and</strong> 5% in<br />

forestry undertakings or market gardens. However, it must be stressed<br />

that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> figures cannot be regarded as representative, since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> calls<br />

c<strong>on</strong>stitute <strong>on</strong>ly a small proporti<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> events actually occurring.<br />

6.3.1 C<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

• A relatively large number of cases of pesticide pois<strong>on</strong>ing are recorded<br />

each year. Deaths have occurred through suicide <strong>and</strong> accidents am<strong>on</strong>g<br />

children. About half <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> recorded admissi<strong>on</strong>s in c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with<br />

pesticide pois<strong>on</strong>ing relate to children.<br />

• Cases of pois<strong>on</strong>ing with pesticides that have been out of use for many<br />

years still occur.<br />

6.4 The sub-committee’s c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> recommendati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

The sub-committee deems <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> risk of acute effects <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides to be<br />

c<strong>on</strong>siderably lower today than it was just 10 years ago because <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> most<br />

harmful products are no l<strong>on</strong>ger permitted. The possibility cannot be<br />

excluded of some risk to pers<strong>on</strong>s who do not observe <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> given rules for<br />

pers<strong>on</strong>al protecti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> correct use of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides, inappropriate work<br />

routines <strong>and</strong> poor work hygiene. However, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sub-committee notes that<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re can be c<strong>on</strong>siderable exposure of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> sprayer operator <strong>and</strong> of<br />

workers in greenhouses <strong>and</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> producti<strong>on</strong> of fruit <strong>and</strong> vegetables,<br />

where frequent use is made of pesticides.<br />

The sub-committee c<strong>on</strong>cludes that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> risk of occupati<strong>on</strong>al accidents in<br />

c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> with mechanical weed c<strong>on</strong>trol could rise with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

introducti<strong>on</strong> of more machines, which require repair <strong>and</strong> maintenance.<br />

Fur<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rmore, increased manual weeding could result in more cases of<br />

injury due to repetitive, m<strong>on</strong>ot<strong>on</strong>ous work (RMW). There is a generally<br />

increased risk of physical problems – particularly osteoarthritis – am<strong>on</strong>g<br />

workers in farming due to stable work, milking, tractor operati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong><br />

heavy physical work, which are not related to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use of pesticides.<br />

• The review of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticide intake <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> food products <strong>and</strong> drinking<br />

water shows that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> main sources of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> populati<strong>on</strong>’s exposure is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

intake <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> berries, fruit <strong>and</strong> vegetables <strong>and</strong>, to some extent, cereals<br />

<strong>and</strong> cereal products, while <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> intake <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> drinking water, animal<br />

food products <strong>and</strong> fish is of no significance to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> total exposure.<br />

• Treated crops must always be assumed to have a certain residual<br />

c<strong>on</strong>tent, so failure to detect a c<strong>on</strong>tent can <strong>on</strong>ly be taken to mean that<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tent is in such case below <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> analytical detecti<strong>on</strong> level.<br />

• Limiting permissi<strong>on</strong> to spray after flowering or seeding would reduce<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> residual c<strong>on</strong>tents.<br />

• The total average load <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> food products is estimated to be approx.<br />

200 microgrammes pesticide per day, more than half of which comes<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> just a few types of food products, namely citrus fruit, potatoes<br />

<strong>and</strong> apples. Around 60% come <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> imported products <strong>and</strong> 40% <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
