fertiliser, 25 t<strong>on</strong>nes of pig manure per hectare were used, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> density of<br />
earthworms would increase by about 25%. For comparis<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> density in<br />
a clover-grass field is shown. There, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> highest value is reached <strong>on</strong>e year<br />
after reploughing. It can thus be c<strong>on</strong>cluded that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> density of<br />
earthworms is not affected by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides used in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> scenario for<br />
present producti<strong>on</strong> but is greatly affected by soil treatment, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use of<br />
animal manure <strong>and</strong>, particularly, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> crop rotati<strong>on</strong>.<br />

There are a number of characteristic bird species in Danish farml<strong>and</strong>.<br />
Their populati<strong>on</strong> development <strong>and</strong> distributi<strong>on</strong> in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> l<strong>and</strong>scape have<br />
been studied as an element of research <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> impact of pesticides <strong>on</strong><br />
nature <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> envir<strong>on</strong>ment (Petersen, Jacobsen 1997). With this<br />
knowledge it is possible to carry out simple calculati<strong>on</strong>s of how <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> bird<br />
populati<strong>on</strong>s would develop in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> different scenarios for l<strong>and</strong> use <strong>and</strong><br />
pesticide use (Petersen, Jensen, 1998).<br />
There have been some studies that do not directly c<strong>on</strong>tain data that can<br />
be used for scenario analyses because <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y cannot be generalised or have<br />
been collected in c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s that do not reflect present-day Danish<br />
agricultural c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s (Petersen, Jensen, 1998). The calculati<strong>on</strong> used is<br />
based <strong>on</strong> data <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> three years' counts of birds in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeding seas<strong>on</strong> at<br />
