Xenobiotic substances<br />
cereal crops a major source of people’s intake of cadmium. People’s<br />
intake of lead, cadmium <strong>and</strong> mercury is generally high. Lead is not<br />
absorbed by plants but l<strong>and</strong>s <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir surfaces in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> form of small<br />
particles <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> atmosphere. However, nati<strong>on</strong>al <strong>and</strong> l<strong>on</strong>g-range<br />
transboundary air polluti<strong>on</strong> with heavy metals has been c<strong>on</strong>siderably<br />
reduced in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last 15 years. Better treatment of flue gas <strong>and</strong> a ban <strong>on</strong><br />
lead in petrol have reduced air polluti<strong>on</strong>. Since 1978, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> depositi<strong>on</strong> of<br />
cadmium has been reduced by 66%, <strong>and</strong> atmospheric emissi<strong>on</strong>s of lead<br />
have fallen by more than 75%. The use of copper <strong>and</strong> zinc as growth<br />
promoters in pig producti<strong>on</strong> means that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tent of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se metals is<br />
rising <strong>on</strong> soil regularly fertilised with pig manure <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> herds in which<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se growth promoters are used. Both metals affect <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> soil’s<br />
microorganisms <strong>and</strong>, in high c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s, can inhibit plant growth.<br />
The metals are not a serious problem in cultivated l<strong>and</strong> today. However,<br />
this does not apply to really c<strong>on</strong>taminated l<strong>and</strong>, e.g. former industrial<br />
sites. Even so, taken toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> different sources can cause an increase<br />
in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> soil’s c<strong>on</strong>tent of heavy metals. The envir<strong>on</strong>mental authorities are<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore taking targeted acti<strong>on</strong> to reduce <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use of heavy metals –<br />
particularly cadmium, lead <strong>and</strong> mercury – in society. Seen in proporti<strong>on</strong><br />
to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> impact of pesticides, heavy metals are a bigger <strong>health</strong> problem than<br />
pesticides, but are not a big envir<strong>on</strong>mental problem. With <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
envir<strong>on</strong>ment policy pursued, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> problem is being reduced at source, both<br />
nati<strong>on</strong>ally <strong>and</strong> internati<strong>on</strong>ally. Owing to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>tinuing although<br />
diminishing supply, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> load <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> heavy metals must be m<strong>on</strong>itored <strong>on</strong> a<br />
l<strong>on</strong>g-term basis.<br />
A very large number of chemical substances are used in society. Some of<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m end up in wastewater sludge <strong>and</strong> are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>reby c<strong>on</strong>veyed to l<strong>and</strong><br />
under cultivati<strong>on</strong>. In 1997, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Danish Envir<strong>on</strong>mental Protecti<strong>on</strong> Agency<br />
introduced limit values for significant <strong>and</strong> representative, xenobiotic<br />
organic substances in sludge. It took this acti<strong>on</strong> to protect <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
envir<strong>on</strong>ment <strong>and</strong> to promote <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> phasing-out of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se substances <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir cycles in society. There are now limit values for a number of tar<br />
substances (PAHs), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> surfactants LAS, n<strong>on</strong>ylphenols <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> plasticiser<br />
DEHP. At <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same time, both ecotoxicological <strong>and</strong> human toxicological<br />
soil quality criteria have been set for a wide range of substances that can<br />
occur as c<strong>on</strong>taminants in soil or waste products. A number of studies are<br />
in progress to determine whe<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se protecti<strong>on</strong> levels are adequate.<br />
Xenobiotic substances can also be present in low c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s as<br />
c<strong>on</strong>taminants in animal feed. The substances in questi<strong>on</strong> are banned<br />
pesticides, such as DDT <strong>and</strong> toxaphen, <strong>and</strong> industrial c<strong>on</strong>taminants, such<br />
as PCB. These substances can be supplied to plants during <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir growth<br />
period as atmospheric depositi<strong>on</strong> as a c<strong>on</strong>sequence of l<strong>on</strong>g-range<br />
transfr<strong>on</strong>tier atmospheric polluti<strong>on</strong>, toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r with combusti<strong>on</strong> products,<br />
such as PAHs <strong>and</strong> dioxins. The cleaning products used by farmers for<br />
cleaning stables c<strong>on</strong>tain LAS <strong>and</strong> n<strong>on</strong>ylphenol compounds. Small<br />
amounts of plasticisers, e.g. DEHP, are released <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> hoses, tanks, paint<br />
<strong>and</strong> plastic objects. The total supply means that manure also c<strong>on</strong>tains<br />
xenobiotic substances, which reach soil under cultivati<strong>on</strong> by this<br />
pathway. Lastly, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is a direct supply of c<strong>on</strong>taminants <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
atmosphere to plant surfaces <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> soil. The c<strong>on</strong>taminants in questi<strong>on</strong><br />
are PAHs, PCB, dioxins, chlorinated phenols <strong>and</strong> benzenes, toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r with<br />
