Results of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> model<br />

calculati<strong>on</strong>, impacts <strong>on</strong><br />

algae <strong>and</strong> crustaceans<br />

Probability of effects<br />

206<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>ment is assumed to be low. They are <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>refore not included in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

model. The model takes into account <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> temperature-dependent<br />

degradati<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides. Spray drift c<strong>on</strong>stitutes not more than 1% of<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> area dose at a distance of 2 metres in March-April, when <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> p<strong>on</strong>d<br />

reaches its maximum size. In practice, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> transport via spray drift is<br />

lower in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> model owing to adjustment for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> area <strong>and</strong> cross secti<strong>on</strong> of<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> p<strong>on</strong>d, <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wind is assumed to blow in <strong>on</strong>e directi<strong>on</strong>. The model<br />

does not include transport of pesticides via rainwater or l<strong>on</strong>g-distance<br />

atmospheric transport. It can be assumed that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> surface run-off of<br />

pesticides c<strong>on</strong>stitutes 0.2% of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticide pool <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> nearest 2<br />

hectares in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> field during precipitati<strong>on</strong> events of more than 10 mm per<br />

day, as described in secti<strong>on</strong> 4.6.1.<br />

The simulati<strong>on</strong>s show that, all else being equal, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use of pesticides in<br />

winter cereals, potatoes, root crops <strong>and</strong> peas c<strong>on</strong>stitutes a major risk to<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> flora <strong>and</strong> fauna in p<strong>on</strong>ds. Less burdensome crops are spring cereal,<br />

spring rape, maize <strong>and</strong>, to some extent, winter rape. The model predicts<br />

that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> critical pesticides for algae <strong>and</strong> aquatic plants (macrophytes) in<br />

p<strong>on</strong>ds are isoprotur<strong>on</strong>, glyphosate, fenpropimorph, ethofumesate,<br />

metamitr<strong>on</strong>, pendimethalin, metribuzin, prosulfocarb, mancozeb, maneb<br />

<strong>and</strong> clopyralid. Crustaceans <strong>and</strong> insects are largely equally sensitive, <strong>and</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> simulated effects <strong>on</strong> crustaceans can in principle be c<strong>on</strong>sidered to<br />

apply to insects as well. The critical pesticides with respect to effects <strong>on</strong><br />

crustaceans <strong>and</strong> insects are esfenvalerate, propic<strong>on</strong>azol, pendimethalin,<br />

metribuzin, prosulfocarb, mancozeb <strong>and</strong> maneb. If <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re are no run-off<br />

events within a growth seas<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ly source of load <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> p<strong>on</strong>d is<br />

spray drift. The analyses show that this supply is <strong>on</strong>ly of importance in<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> case of esfenvalerate, with a 6-9% reducti<strong>on</strong> in daphnia biomass.<br />

Assuming that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> p<strong>on</strong>ds in Denmark are distributed at r<strong>and</strong>om in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

l<strong>and</strong> under cultivati<strong>on</strong>, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> average pesticide load <strong>on</strong> p<strong>on</strong>ds is calculated<br />

<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> basis of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> model's predicti<strong>on</strong>s c<strong>on</strong>cerning effects <strong>on</strong> individual<br />

crops <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> area covered by individual crops. The 0-scenario is not<br />

included in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> calculati<strong>on</strong>s because <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> probability of effects would be<br />

close to 0% assuming that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> precipitati<strong>on</strong>'s c<strong>on</strong>tent of l<strong>on</strong>g-distancetransported<br />

pesticides would not have any effect in p<strong>on</strong>ds. The<br />

calculati<strong>on</strong> shows quite a c<strong>on</strong>siderable probability of effects in both <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

2.34 <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1.17 scenarios, see figure 10.10. The probability of more<br />

than 10% inhibiti<strong>on</strong> of algae is about 85% in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2.34 scenario <strong>and</strong> about<br />

45% in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1.17 scenario, about 20% in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 0.59 scenario <strong>and</strong> about 10%<br />

in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 0.26 scenario.
