c<strong>on</strong>cerning relati<strong>on</strong>ships between dosage <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> of pesticides<br />
in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> water samples analysed.<br />
The following specific c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s can be drawn:<br />
• The pesticides detected in soil <strong>and</strong> drain water are often <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same as<br />
are detected in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> aquifers, see secti<strong>on</strong> 4.1.<br />
• The c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s of pesticides detected in soil <strong>and</strong> drain water<br />
exceed <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> limit value for drinking water more frequently than in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
groundwater analyses. Many of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides detected are now<br />
banned in Denmark, but were permitted at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> time of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> analyses.<br />
• Owing to limited data, it is not deemed warranted to draw c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong>s<br />
c<strong>on</strong>cerning relati<strong>on</strong>ships between dosage in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> field <strong>and</strong><br />
c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> of pesticides in drain <strong>and</strong> soil water.<br />
• Assuming that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> extent of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> catchment area is known <strong>and</strong> that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
pesticides used in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> area are known, a drain water analysis gives an<br />
idea of whe<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r used pesticides or <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir degradati<strong>on</strong> products can<br />
reach <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> groundwater. However, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> results depend <strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> local<br />
c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> wea<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r, <strong>and</strong> it is not possible to carry out a mass<br />
flow analysis that describes <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> fate of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> pesticides in time <strong>and</strong><br />
space.<br />
• Lysimeter studies <strong>and</strong> laboratory analyses of radioactively labelled<br />
pesticides <strong>and</strong> degradati<strong>on</strong> products in undisturbed columns of soil<br />
can be suitable tools for judging <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> risk of leaching in c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong><br />
with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use of pesticides in different soils.<br />
• Both <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> level of c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> frequency of detecti<strong>on</strong>s are<br />
highest in clayey soils. However, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> data are limited <strong>and</strong> can be<br />
improved with supplementary studies.<br />
4.5 Pesticides in rainwater<br />
As found by Felding (1998a), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re have been relatively few studies in<br />
Denmark. In a cooperative project under <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> auspices of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Nordic<br />
Council of Ministers, rainwater samples were collected <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2 localities<br />
in Denmark – Ulfborg Plantati<strong>on</strong> 10 km <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> west coast of Jutl<strong>and</strong>,<br />
<strong>and</strong> Gadevang near Gribskov, a forest in North Zeal<strong>and</strong> – <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g> 1992 to<br />
1994. The analyses covered 10 pesticides: propic<strong>on</strong>azole, prochloraz,<br />
lambda-cyhalothrin, cypermethrin, esfenvalerate, deltamethrin, atrazine,<br />
mechlorprop, dichlorprop <strong>and</strong> MCPA. Only <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> phenoxy acids were<br />
detected, <strong>and</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> highest c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s found were just under 0.4<br />
microgramme per litre (Kirknel et al. 1997). The c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>s found<br />
were very small in relati<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> dosage in field spraying. The effects of<br />
pesticides in rainwater are assessed in secti<strong>on</strong> 5.2.<br />
In a current project, samples of precipitati<strong>on</strong> are being collected <str<strong>on</strong>g>from</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
three Zeal<strong>and</strong> localities: Gadevang, Gisselfeld <strong>and</strong> Lorup. The samples<br />
are analysed for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> phenoxy acids: MCPA, mechlorprop <strong>and</strong><br />
dichlorprop, <strong>and</strong> for <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> herbicide isoprotur<strong>on</strong>. The highest<br />
