I. Rasgos afros en <strong>la</strong> literatura <strong>la</strong>tinoamericana V. Danzas afro<strong>la</strong>tinoamericanas
La experiencia beliceña Rosa Baltazar* * Instructora de danza folclórica garífuna, criol<strong>la</strong>, mestiza, moderna y clásica. Fue instructora de danza de <strong>la</strong> Compaña de Danza Beliceña (BDC) [Belice] Belice es un país del Pacífico, de hab<strong>la</strong> inglesa, a dos horas de distancia desde tres de los principales aeropuertos de Estados Unidos. Con una variedad de oportunidades para <strong>la</strong> aventura incomparable con otro país, <strong>la</strong> gente beliceña ha protegido más del 40% del país, como parques y reservas naturales. Belice, conocido como <strong>la</strong> Honduras Británica (British Honduras) antes de su independencia en 1981, está ubicado en <strong>la</strong> costa del Caribe, entre México y Guatema<strong>la</strong>, y ofrece una mezc<strong>la</strong> intrigante de selva tropical rica y vida silvestre, montañas majestuosas, templos mayas misteriosos, experiencias de buceo y pesca más allá de cualquier comparación. En un solo día, uno puede ir desde <strong>la</strong> selva tropical hasta el arrecife más grande del hemisferio occidental. Y <strong>la</strong>s gentes son cálidas y amistosas, como el clima. Belice es país de varias <strong>cultura</strong>s, lenguajes y grupos étnicos –aproximadamente, 270 mil personas–: criollo, garífuna, mestizo, maya, español, inglés, menonita, libanés, chino e hindú oriental. Debido a <strong>la</strong> armonía racial y tolerancia religiosa, todos estos diferentes elementos se han mezc<strong>la</strong>do y fundido con éxito, y Belice ha ganado reputación amplia por su gente amigable. Uno de los grupos étnicos de mayor prominencia son los criollos, los cuales integraban el 30% de <strong>la</strong> pob<strong>la</strong>ción para 2001. Los criollos son descendientes de <strong>la</strong> mezc<strong>la</strong> de los primeros pob<strong>la</strong>dores británicos con esc<strong>la</strong>vos africanos. Más del 40% de <strong>la</strong> pob<strong>la</strong>ción es mestiza: son descendientes de mexicanos de sangre mezc<strong>la</strong>da y mayas yucatecos, quienes huyeron de Yucatán a mediados de 1800. Otro 6,6% de <strong>la</strong> pob<strong>la</strong>ción de Belice es garífuna. Los garífunas tienen su propio lenguaje y <strong>cultura</strong>. El yucateco, mopán y kekchí son tres grupos amerindios que también componen <strong>la</strong> pob<strong>la</strong>ción beliceña. Los chinos, con una pob<strong>la</strong>ción de 6 mil habitantes, han hecho comunidades propias, al igual que los hindúes orientales y los menonitas. El inglés sigue siendo <strong>la</strong> lengua que se hab<strong>la</strong> mayoritariamente, seguido por el criollo; pero el español se vuelve más ampliamente hab<strong>la</strong>do. Los garífunas, los mayas y los menonitas hab<strong>la</strong>n cada uno su propia lengua. Los garinagu fueron exiliados de su tierra de San Vicente (Yurumei) en el año 1797; los ingleses los derrotaron y luego murió el jefe Chatoyer en el año 1795. Desde su llegada a Centroamérica hace más de 200 años, el garinagu se ha esforzado para mantener su identidad como pueblo, y en el año 2002 <strong>la</strong> UNESCO proc<strong>la</strong>mó <strong>la</strong> <strong>cultura</strong> garífuna como “obra maestra del patrimonio de <strong>la</strong> humanidad oral e intangible”. Posiblemente, <strong>la</strong> supervivencia del lenguaje, <strong>la</strong> <strong>cultura</strong> y <strong>la</strong> tecnología garífuna junto con <strong>la</strong> espiritualidad entre los garinagu de Centroamérica, pero aún más en Belice, fue el resultado del ais<strong>la</strong>miento de otras comunidades, forzándolos a depender de sí mismos y a continuar con su <strong>cultura</strong> nativa. Los ingleses nos hicieron un favor en Belice, contando rumores de explotación garífuna, lo cual inspiró temor y desconfianza. En Belice, los garinagu fueron relegados a un área al sur del río Sibun y fueron apartados de <strong>la</strong> cuidad. Por mucho tiempo no pudieron ser dueños de terrenos. Sus campamentos, por <strong>la</strong> costa del sur de Belice, del río Sibun hasta Barranco, en el sur del país, situados en un territorio muy virgen, les permitieron un cierto ambiente tipo Yurumei, así como también los forzaron a ais<strong>la</strong>rse de otras influencias <strong>cultura</strong>les. 97
