THE MODAL SHIFT OPERATION ON CONTAINERIZED CARGO AS STRATEGY TO<br />

REDUCE LOGISTICS COSTS<br />

ABSTRACT<br />

Tipificación: Comunicaciones <strong>de</strong> experiencias profesionales<br />

Modal shift strategy shall be an important <strong>de</strong>cision making weapon in the logistics costs in<br />

or<strong>de</strong>r to get competitive advantages for transport companies. This inclu<strong>de</strong>s logistics general<br />

costs representing an alternative to <strong>de</strong>crease port chaos, as well as to allow the responsible<br />

management for entire company environment. The port transactions require holistic elements<br />

that support <strong>de</strong>cision making. Particularly for present case, rail transport was emphasized as<br />

a sustainable option in the modal shift since it reduces the emission of CO2, which permit<br />

gains for the both company and society; however, in Brazil operation faces limited logistic<br />

theoretical references. That is why necessary <strong>de</strong>ep studies on the specific theme even its<br />

adoption by the companies. It has been proved that modal shift is a complex alternative,<br />

which requires attention to the several factors involved in the containerized cargo<br />

transportation, from the distance between ports and hinterland, providing competitive<br />

advantages through operational logistics costs and inventory-theory references in the supply<br />

chain and kind of modal a<strong>de</strong>quate to each i<strong>de</strong>ntified conditions in the geographical and<br />

political space being studied.
