A combined interview- and corpus study<br />
Abstract<br />
In this essay the usage and meaning of a set of chosen translation equivalents in of w<strong>ord</strong>s and phrases for facial<br />
expressions have been studied in Swedish and Mandarin. The task was approached through semi-structured<br />
interviews with native speakers of Swedish and Mandarin, as well as through a corpus based collocation<br />
investigation. The semantic analysis method Natural Semantic Metalanguage has been used to describe the inner<br />
state of mind of persons when they act in the ways that the w<strong>ord</strong>s and expressions describe, as well as the<br />
thoughts and feelings attributed to them by onlookers. Some interesting differences between the translation<br />
equivalents have been observed.<br />
