Unfortunately, Karlshorst is not in the city centre and forthis reason, the Museum does not get as many visitors as it should anddoes not get the attention that would be appropriate to this issue and itsrepresentation.On behalf of the advisory committee to the board of trustees of the foundationfor the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, I wish to say thatwe took very seriously the responsibility given to us by the German parliament,the Bundestag, to make sure that ‘other groups of victims are commemoratedin a dignified fashion’. We listened to all groups of victims,weighed up the evidence and discussed remembrance of the the respectivevictims with every intention of achieving solutions.One of the fruits of our efforts is the decision to commemorate the torturedhomosexuals at their own place of remembrance. That is the rightthing to do. What many people wanted, and we rejected all along, was acommon memorial to all groups of victims. That would have blurred ourunderstanding of how and why the members of the individual groupsbecame victims. Time and again, we emphasized and tried to explain why itwas our deep conviction that each group should be given its own memorial.The different groups’ histories of suffering and victimhood are too diversefor them all to be remembered – in accordance with their histories and thenumbers of victims – at a single memorial. Eberhard Jäckel repeatedlydeclared, and we agreed wholeheartedly, that any such memorial wouldhave been unspecific.I think today will make it clear how, why and to what a great extent thehomosexuals suffered under the Nazis. What is important now is to understandand grasp their history.The story of the homosexuals’ suffering will be told at the memorial. If it istrue that we want to learn from history, then this memorial will also be aplace of learning.
