1. Introduction
The species diversity is high for a forest situated
on sandstone, while the population densities are
relatively low or even very low for some of the
taxa. The high diversity may well be due to the
biogeographically intermediate position of the
forest between the Atlantic and Central zones of
Europe with species from both areas being present.
At the same time the low densities of some species
are most likely due to the fact that the ecological
conditions in the habitat are not entirely suitable
for them and may reflect that they are very close
to the limits of their range. The species were essentially
"wild", mainly synanthropic species were
not represented. While no calcicolous species
were present either, indications from the species
that were recorded suggest that the soil is to some
degree base-rich, at least in some areas of the forest.
Species associated with the poorest leached, acidic
soils were less evident than those associated with
better soils in the region. As will be shown later,
few species were common throughout the forest.
2. Comments on Taxonomy
The millipede names correspond with those in
Remy & Hoffmann (1959) with the following six
exceptions:
Nemasoma varicorne is now the name accorded to
Isobates varicornis in Remy & Hoffman .
Allaiulus nitidus is now the name accorded to
Cylindroiulus nitidus.

Cylindroiulus punctatus (Leach, 1815) has precedence
over Cylindroiulus silvarum.
Tachypodoiulus niger (Leach, 1815) has precedence
over Tachypodoiulus albipes.
Craspedosoma rawlinsi in the modern sense includes
both Craspedosoma alemmanicum and Craspedosoma
rawlinsi in Remy & Hoffmann. The one
present in the Schnellert is C. rawlinsi alemannicum.
Melogona gallicum is now the name accorded to
Microchordeuma gallicum.
(Orthochordeumella pallida Rothenbühler, 1899, was
not recorded by Remy & Hoffmann.)
The centipede names correspond with those in
Remy & Hoffmann, except that:
Lithobius macilentus L. Koch, 1862, is now the
correct name for Lithobius aulacopus.
Geophilus alpinus Meinert, 1870, is now the correct
name for Geophilus insculptus Attems, 1895.
There has been confusion in the past over
the correct identity of Geophilus insculptus
and Geophilus proximus. It is very likely that
the records of G. proximus given in Remy &
Hoffmann, 1959, would today be attributed to
G. alpinus.
Strigamia is now the accepted name for the former
genus Scolioplanes.
Lithobius aeruginosus L. Koch, 1862, and Lithobius
mutabilis L. Koch, 1862, were not recorded by
Remy & Hoffmann.
