R.D. Kime Tausendfüßer und Hundertfüßer - mille-pattes et chilopodes- Myriapoda, Diplopoda et Chilopoda
a Central species associated with a Continental
climate. It has recently (1999) been recorded for the
first time in the eastern Ardennes of Belgium, which
appears to be its NW limit. There are no records
from the Netherlands. It was found in four forests
in Belgium, three of which were beech woods.
Lithobius piceus is a widespread, mainly woodland
species in Europe. In France its distribution is that
of a Central European species.
Lithobius tricuspis is another common forest species.
Cryptops parisi is a species indicative of cool forests,
common in the Ardennes. In warmer lowland
forests it tend to be replaced by the very common
C. hortensis. C. parisi was the only scolopendromorph
in the Schnellert.
Geophilids were hardly captured at all, being
mainly subterranean in habit. Geophilus alpinus
occurs on the surface and in litter. Only one
specimen of Schendyla nemorensis, which is very
common in lowland Atlantic forests, was found.
Strigamia crassipes and Strigamia acuminata both
occur in leaf litter and are well represented in
beech forest. S. acuminata reaches higher altitudes
on the whole and is by far the commoner in the
Ardennes. The geophilids are rather characteristic
of cool forests.
6. Conclusions
Zwergfüßer - symphyles - Symphyla
The Schnellert houses a fairly rich myriapod fauna
which comprises Atlantic and Central European
elements. There are some montane species. Overall
the continental influence perhaps predominates as
several of the species present are Continental and
even occur in theAlpine zone.
Julids constitute the most important order of
millipedes and in this case the most numerous
species is Tachypodoiulus niger which is Atlantic/
Subatlantic in distribution. But the second
most common species is Craspedosoma rawlinsi,
characteristic of cool forests and abundant in the
Central zone. Then again, the western glomerids
are a conspicuous element. The thermophile
Ommatoiulus sabulosus which is well-known in the
Gutland on well-drained sandy or limestone sites
has not been found in the Schnellert. A number of
species are near the limits of their range.
While most of the centipedes have large European
ranges they reveal more Central than Atlantic
elements. The Schnellert seems to be a transitional
forest: the myriapods are indicative of a reasonably
fertile, well-drained and not highly acidic soil.
