R.D. Kime Tausendfüßer und Hundertfüßer - mille-pattes et chilopodes- Myriapoda, Diplopoda et Chilopoda
238
Polydesmus angustus is one of the commonest
millipedes in the Atlantic zone. It lives primarily
in forest litter and seeks refuge under bark or
below fallen timber. It prefers a silty, alluvial or
sandy loam substrate. It was caught in BSE and
Barber traps, by lime rings and by sieving across
the forest.
In more acidic and wetter conditions P. angustus
occurs with P. denticulatus which may replace it
entirely in inundated or peaty areas. P. denticulatus
occurs in most of Europe and is the commonest
species in Scandinavia and poorly drained or peaty
parts of the Holocene soils in the Netherlands and
the North German plain. The four specimens of P.
denticulatus were caught in Barber traps in areas 4
& 7 and by sieving in areas 2 & 3. The dominance
of P. angustus here reflects a reasonably good, welldrained
soil.
5. Chilopoda
The Chilopoda were as follows (Tab. 2): "NEW"
indicates that the species has not been previously
recorded from the Grand Duchy. Both Lithobius
aeruginosus and Lithobius mutabilis are Central
European species close to their northern and
western limits.
Tab. 2: Checklist of the recorded Chilopoda.
Order Family Species
Lithobius aeruginosus was recorded for the first time
from the Grand Duchy. It is a Central European
species which occurs in the east of Belgium and
the southern part of the Netherlands at the Northwestern
edge of its range. Its presence is therefore
not surprising.
Lithobius crassipes is a common animal in NW
Europe, showing a marked preference for nonurban
sites and occurring in a wide variety of
habitats. It was well represented.
Lithobius dentatus is widespread in deciduous
forests in this region.
Lithobius forficatus appears to be rare in the
Schnellert. It is one of the most widespread
and common European centipedes, abundant
elsewhere in the Grand Duchy.
Lithobius macilentus is the most common forest
centipede in the Belgian Ardennes and widely
reported from forests in the hilly parts of Germany.
Lithobius melanops is very frequently encountered
under the bark of dead and fallen trees, common
in Western Europe. It shows a bias towards sandy
substrates, including sand dunes. It is reputed to
be found in drier types of woodland. It was well
represented.
Lithobius mutabilis was also recorded for the first
time in the Grand Duchy during this study. It is
