on chiefly in Mount-Mellick and its vicinity; there are<br />

also breweries and distilleries.<br />

The living is a rectory and vicarage, in the diocese<br />

of Kildare: the rectory is impropriate in Gen. Dunne;<br />

the vicarage, united with those of Castlebrack, Kilman-<br />

man, and Rerymore, is in the patronage of Thos. Kem-<br />

mis, Esq. The tithes amount to £398. 15. 4¾., of which<br />

£265. 16. 11¼. is payable to the impropriator, and<br />

£132. 18. 5½. to the vicar; the parishes of the union<br />

constitute the barony of Tinnehinch, and the tithes of<br />

the benefice amount to £336. 3. 3½. The glebe-house,<br />

at Camira, is a commodious building on an elevated<br />

piece of ground near the village of Rosenallis, and has<br />

a glebe of 180 acres annexed to it, besides which there are<br />

356 acres of glebe, including mountain land, in the other<br />

parishes of the union. The church, at Rosenallis, is a<br />

neat building, and has been lately thoroughly repaired<br />

by means of a grant of £578 from the Ecclesiastical<br />

Commissioners: there is a chapel of ease at Mount-<br />

Mellick. In the R. C. divisions Rosenallis is the head<br />

of a union or district, comprising parts of the parishes of<br />

Rosenallis, Castlebrack and Rerymore; the other part<br />

of the parish is in the district of Mount-Mellick; there<br />

are chapels at Capard and Mount-Mellick. The Society<br />

of Friends have an enclosed burial-ground near the<br />

village. Besides the schools at Mount-Mellick, there<br />

are, two in Rosenallis, one of which is a national school.<br />

At Rosenallis is a station of the constabulary police.<br />

Within the grounds of Cappard are several raths, and<br />

brass coins of Jas. II. were dug up near the mansion a<br />

few years since. A remarkable togher or bog-pass, in<br />

the neighbourhood, is pointed out as the place where an<br />

engagement took place between parties of King Wil-<br />

liam’s and King James’s forces, in which the latter were<br />

defeated.<br />

ROSINAN, a parish, in the barony of KNOCKTOPHER,<br />

county of KILKENNY, and province of LEINSTER, 5<br />

miles (N. N. W.) from Waterford, on the road to Kilken-<br />

ny; containing 1130 inhabitants, and comprising 5105½<br />

statute acres. It is in the diocese of Ossory; the rectory<br />

is appropriate to the vicars choral of the cathedral of<br />

St. Canice, Kilkenny, and the vicarage forms part of the<br />

union of Kilbeacon. The tithes amount to £207, of<br />

which £138 is payable to the vicars choral, and the re-<br />

mainder to the vicar. In the R. C. divisions it forms<br />

part of the union or district of Kilrnacow.<br />

ROSKEEN, or RUSHEEN, a parish, in the barony<br />

of DUHALLOW, county of CORK, and province of MUN-<br />

STER, 3 miles (S. E.) from Kanturk, on the road to<br />

Mallow; containing 591 inhabitants. It is bounded on<br />

the south by the river Blackwater, which is here crossed<br />

by a stone bridge of ten arches. Near this bridge com-<br />

mences the new Government road, which at Clonbanin<br />

branches off on the right to King-William’s-Town and<br />

Castle-Island, and on the left towards Killarney. The<br />

parish comprises 1795 statute acres, as applotted under<br />

the tithe act; the land is in general good and chiefly in<br />

tillage, and the state of agriculture has of late years<br />

undergone considerable improvement. On the lands of<br />

Pallis, the estate of Robt. Phayre, Esq., are several beds<br />

of culm, which have not yet been worked; limestone<br />

is also found on that estate, and brownstone adapted for<br />

ordinary building purposes is found in other parts of the<br />

parish. The Blackwater is here very rapid and subject<br />

to floods, but at ordinary times is fordable in several<br />

places. Roskeen House, the residence of Pierce Power,<br />

Esq., is pleasantly situated near the river and com-<br />

mands a fine view of the majestic mountain of St.<br />

Hilary. It is a vicarage, in the diocese of Cloyne, form-<br />

ing part of the union of Clonmeen: the rectory is im-<br />

propriate in Robt. Phayre, Esq. The tithes amount to<br />

£80. 10. 7., of which £55 is payable to the impropriator,<br />

and the remainder to the vicar. In the R. C. divisions<br />

it is part of the union or district of Castlemagner.<br />

ROSS, a parish, in the barony of Ross, county of<br />

GALWAY, and province of CONNAUGHT, 3 miles (W. by<br />

N.) from Cong, on the road to Connemara and the sea at<br />

Killery bay; containing 4361 inhabitants. This parish,<br />

which was formerly known also by the name of Faghery,<br />

together with the adjoining parish of Cong, forms the<br />

narrow isthmus which separates the extensive loughs<br />

Corrib and Mask, and comprises 44,062 statute acres,<br />

as applotted under the tithe act, and valued at £3923<br />

per annum. About two-fifths of the land are rough<br />

mountain pasture, all of which by judicious treatment<br />

could be reclaimed and rendered available for agricul-<br />

tural purposes, one-fifth waste, one-fifth bog, and the<br />

remainder, with the exception of about 500 acres of<br />

wood, good arable land in a profitable state of cultiva-<br />

tion. Great quantities of oats raised here are sold<br />

at Clonlur, in this parish, where a market is held on<br />

Saturday, and fairs for general farming stock on Feb.<br />

1st, March 17th, July 1st, and Sept. 1st. A small<br />

market for corn is also held at Fairhill during the sea-<br />

son. A few of the inhabitants are employed in spinning<br />

flax and woollen yarn for their own use. Lumber boats<br />

are employed on Lough Mask in carrying turf, timber,<br />

grain, and other agricultural produce of the parish to<br />

Galway, and a communication with the sea and the<br />

Killery harbours affords great facility of conveyance. In<br />

the mountain of Glanlosh is a slate quarry, the pro-<br />

perty of Thos. Martin, Esq., but not worked at pre-<br />

sent. The only seats are Ross Hill, the property of<br />

the Earl of Leitrim, at present unoccupied; Peters-<br />

burgh, the residence of C. Lynch, Esq.; and Ben-<br />

levy Lodge, of J. Blake, Esq. At the head of Lough<br />

Corrib, which is navigable to the neighbourhood of<br />

Galway, is the Corrib hotel, situated at Maam, among the<br />

mountains, at the foot of Noneen More, at the entrance<br />

of Joyces’ country and the Killeries, and commanding a<br />

beautiful view of the picturesque scenery in this very<br />

romantic district. It is a rectory and vicarage, in the<br />

diocese of Tuam, forming part of the union of Kilmolara;<br />

the tithes amount to £430. In the R. C. divisions it is<br />

the head of a union or district, comprising also part of<br />

the parish of Cong; this union is also called Feara, and<br />

contains three chapels, two at Ross and one at Cong.<br />

About 240 children are taught in two public schools,<br />

one of which is in connection with the Kildare-place<br />

Society and the other with the Board of National Edu-<br />

cation; and there is a private school at Fairhill, in<br />

which are about 50 children. A monastery for Con-<br />

ventual Franciscans was founded here in 1431, which<br />

was reformed by the Observantines in 1470. There<br />

are some remains of Castle Kirk, on the island of<br />

that name in Lough Corrib. Near the house of Ross-<br />

hill are the ruins of an ancient church and a burial-<br />

ground, called by the people in the neighbourhood Russ<br />

the Faghery to distinguish it from, the abbey of Ross<br />

near Headford, which is called Russ Rela.<br />
