to Michael Andrews, Esq., of Ardoyne, in which the<br />

elegant royal damasks from the Ardoyne manufactory<br />

are finished, to the number of more than 10,000 pieces<br />

annually, affording constant employment to 25 persons.<br />

A constabulary police force is stationed here. The<br />

living is a vicarage, in the diocese of Connor, united<br />

by charter of Jas. I. to the rectory of Ballynure and<br />

the vicarage of Templecorran, together forming the<br />

union and corps of the prebend of Kilroot in the cathe-<br />

dral of Connor, and in the patronage of the Bishop;<br />

the rectory is impropriate in the Marquess of Donegal.<br />

The tithes amount to £151. 6. 7., of which £101 is<br />

payable to the impropriator, and £50. 6. 7. to the vicar;<br />

those of the entire benefice amount to £560. There is<br />

neither glebe-house nor glebe. The church has been in<br />

rains for more than 200 years; the church of the union<br />

is at Ballynure. In the R. C. divisions the parish forms<br />

part of the union or district of Carrickfergus and Larne.<br />

A school for girls was built and is supported by Mrs.<br />

Dobbs; and a school-house was built in 1836, which is<br />

in connection with the New Board of Education. A<br />

nitrous spring rises in abed of marly clay in the parish,<br />

the water of which has an aperient quality. Dean<br />

Swift held the prebend of Kilroot, which was his first<br />

preferment.<br />

KILROSS, or KILRASSE, a parish, in the barony<br />

TIRAGHRILL, county of SLIGO, and province of CON-<br />

NAUGHT, 2½ miles (E.) from Collooney, on the road to<br />

Dromahaire; containing 1669 inhabitants. The church<br />

of the Holy Trinity, or Athmoy, was built here for<br />

Premonstratensian Canons, brought from Lough Kee<br />

by Clarus Mac Moylin O’Moillchonry, archdeacon of<br />

Elphin, in the 13th century: the outer walls still re-<br />

main, with a burial-place attached. The parish com-<br />

prises 1426 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe<br />

act, and contains abundance of limestone. Castle<br />

Dargan is the seat of J. Ormsby, Esq., and near it are<br />

the ruins of an ancient castle. It is a vicarage, in the<br />

diocese of Elphin, forming part of the union of Boyle;<br />

the rectory is impropriate in Viscount Lorton. The<br />

tithes amount to £82. 10. 9., of which £41 is payable<br />

to the impropriator, and £41. 10. 9. to the vicar. In<br />

the R. C. divisions it forms part of the union or district<br />

of Sowey. There are two public schools, in which<br />

140 children are educated, and a private school of<br />

about 40.<br />

KILROSSANTY, a parish, in the barony of DECIES-<br />

WITHOUT-DRUM, county of WATERFORD, and province<br />

of MUNSTER, 5 miles (W. S. W.) from Kilmacthomas,<br />

on the old road from Waterford to Dungarvan. This<br />

parish comprises 16,196 statute acres, as applotted<br />

under the tithe act; the soil is generally of an inferior<br />

quality, and there are about 1000 acres of bog. It<br />

extends from the eastern base of the Cummeragh moun-<br />

tains, and includes the hamlets of Cummeragh and<br />

Glendaligan. The principal seats are Roxborough, the<br />

residence of Col. Wray Palliser; Mount Kennedy, of<br />

E. Kennedy, Esq.; and Brook Lodge, of J. Ryall, Esq.<br />

Fairs are held at Ballycaroge on the 2nd and 21st of<br />

October. The living is a vicarage, in the diocese of<br />

Lismore, and in the gift of the Bishop, who also pre-<br />

sents to the rectory, which forms the corps of the<br />

prebend of Kilrossanty in the cathedral of Lismore:<br />

the tithes amount to £600, of which £400 is payable to<br />

the prebendary, and £200 to the vicar. The glebe-<br />

house was erected by aid of a gift of £100 and a loan<br />

of £314 from the late Board of First Fruits, in 1818;<br />

the glebe comprises 14 acres. The church was built in<br />

1810, by a gift of £500 from the same Board, and has<br />

been recently repaired by a grant of £240 from the<br />

Ecclesiastical Commissioners. In the R. C. divisions it<br />

is the head of a union or district, comprising this parish<br />

and Fews, in each of which is a chapel. There is a<br />

public school of about 20 children, to which Col. Pal-<br />

liser subscribes £40 annually, besides giving the school-<br />

house: and near the R. C. chapel a commodious school-<br />

house has been recently erected by subscription, on a<br />

site given by Pierse G. Barron, Esq., in which about 70<br />

children are educated. There are also three private<br />

schools, in which are about 250 children. In the bed<br />

of a stream is a detached fragment of rock split<br />

through, called Clough Lowris, or “the speaking stone”<br />

At Barnakile are some remains of a castle, and there<br />

was one at Ballycaroge belonging to the Walsh<br />

family.<br />

KILRUANE, a parish, partly in the barony of<br />

LOWER ORMOND, but chiefly in that of UPPER OR-<br />

MOND, county of TIPPERARY, and province of MUNSTER,<br />

2¼ miles (N. E.) from Nenagh, on the road to Parsons-<br />

town; containing 1384 inhabitants. It comprises 3726<br />

statute acres, principally under tillage; the drill system<br />

of agriculture is general. There are some limestone<br />

quarries, and a bog of about 50 acres. The principal<br />

seats are Rapla, the residence of W. C. Crawford, Esq.;<br />

Rathurlys, of T. Brereton, Esq.; Ballinware, of J. Otway,<br />

Esq.; and Claremont, of F. Evans, Esq. The living is a<br />

rectory and vicarage, in the diocese of Killaloe, and in<br />

the patronage of the Bishop: the tithes amount to<br />

£198. 8. 2. The church, which is a neat structure, was<br />

built by a gift of £800 from the late Board of First<br />

Fruits, in 1822. In the R. C. divisions the parish forms<br />

part of the union or district of Cloghjordan, and con-<br />

tains a chapel. There is a private school of about 50<br />

children. In the demesne of Rathurlys there are the<br />

remains of a circular castle and of a Danish rath,<br />

covering about two acres, in which are the picturesque<br />

ruins of the old church; and near it are the remains<br />

of a druidical altar,<br />

KILRUSH, a sea-port, market and post-town, and<br />

a parish, in the barony of MOYARTA, county of CLARE,<br />

and province of MUNSTER, 21 miles (S. W.) from Ennis,<br />

and 130¼ (S. W.) from Dublin; containing 9732 in-<br />

habitants, of which number, 3996 are in the town. This<br />

town is pleasantly situated on the northern shore of the<br />

estuary of the Shannon, about 15 miles from its mouth,<br />

and on the creek to which it gives name, and to the<br />

convenience of which for export trade it owes its present<br />

importance. It is neatly built, and consists of a market-<br />

square insersected from east to west by a spacious street,<br />

from which smaller streets branch off; the total num-<br />

ber of houses, in 1831, was 712, since which time<br />

several others have been added. The principal streets<br />

are well paved and flagged; and the roads in the vicinity<br />

have been greatly improved within the last few years.<br />

The manufactures of the town and neighbourhood,<br />

chiefly for home consumption, are friezes, flannels,<br />

stockings, strong sheetings, and a serviceable kind of<br />

narrow linen, called bandle cloth. There are works for<br />

refining rock salt for domestic use, a tanyard, a soap<br />

manufactory, and a manufactory for nails. The chief
