KIL<br />

KILSHANNY, a parish, in the barony of CORCOM-<br />

ROE, county of CLARE, and province of MUNSTER, 2¼<br />

miles (N.) from Ennistymon, on the road to Kilfenora;<br />

containing 2013 inhabitants. Here was formerly a cell<br />

to the abbey of Corcomroe, which at the dissolution<br />

was, with its appurtenances, mills, and fisheries, granted<br />

to Robert Hickman. The parish comprises 9349 statute<br />

acres, as applotted under the tithe act, and chiefly under<br />

tillage: there is a considerable portion of bog. A court<br />

for the manor of Corcomroe is occasionally held by the<br />

seneschal at Kilshanny, for the recovery of small debts.<br />

It is a rectory, in the diocese of Kilfenora, partly ap-<br />

propriate to the deanery, but chiefly impropriate in<br />

R. M. G. Adams, Esq.: the tithes amount to £158, of<br />

which £150 is payable to the impropriator, and the<br />

remaining £8, being the tithes of the townland of Bally-<br />

macrenan, to the dean. In the R. C. divisions this<br />

parish is held separately and gives name to the district:<br />

the chapel is at Kilshanny. In a school under the<br />

superintendence of the R. C. clergyman about 90, and<br />

in a private school about 70, children are educated. At<br />

Smithstown, a seat of Viscount Powerscourt, are the<br />

ruins of an ancient castle.<br />

KILSHARVAN, a parish, in the barony of LOWER<br />

DULEEK, county of MEATH, and province of LEINSTER,<br />

3 miles (S.) from Drogheda, on the road to the Naul;<br />

containing 487 inhabitants, of which 169 are in the<br />

hamlet, which contains about 30 houses. It comprises<br />

2061 statute acres, of which about 40 are woodland and<br />

100 waste: the land is of moderately good quality, and<br />

is almost equally divided between pasture and tillage.<br />

Here is plenty of limestone; and on the Nanny water<br />

are extensive bleach-works, the property of A. Arm-<br />

strong, Esq., contiguous to whose tastefully laid out<br />

grounds are the picturesque ruins of the old church, the<br />

burial-ground of which is still used. The other princi-<br />

pal seats are Mount Hanover, the residence of J. Ma-<br />

thews, Esq.; Cooper Hill, of J. Cooper, Esq.; and<br />

Annagor, of P. Mathews, Esq. It is a vicarage, in the<br />

diocese of Meath, forming part of the union of Colpe;<br />

the rectory is partly impropriate in G. Pepper, Esq.,<br />

and partly appropriate to the vicarage. The tithes<br />

amount to £110, of which £74 is payable to the im-<br />

propriator, and £36 to the vicar. There is a glebe of<br />

3½ acres, valued at £12 per annum. In the R. C. divi-<br />

sions it forms part of the union or district of St. Mary’s,<br />

Drogheda. A bequest of £10 per ann. was made by the<br />

late H. Smith, Esq., to the poor of this parish and Colpe.<br />

KILSHEELAN, a parish, partly in the barony of<br />

UPPERTHIRD, county of WATERFORD, but chiefly in<br />

that of IFFA and OFFA EAST, county of TIPPERARY,<br />

and province of MUNSTER, 5 miles (W. N. W.) from<br />

Carrick-on-Suir, on the road from Clonmel to Water-<br />

ford; containing 1531 inhabitants, of which number,<br />

283 are in the county of Waterford. The village com-<br />

prises 57 houses and 290 inhabitants, and is a consta-<br />

bulary police station. Here is a bridge over the river<br />

Suir. The principal seats are Newtown Anner, the resi-<br />

dence of Lady Osborne; Landscape, of — Congreve,<br />

Esq.; and Gurteen, of E. Power, Esq., of which only<br />

the stables are yet built. Adjoining the magnificent<br />

woods of this demesne, which contains a cromlech, is a<br />

large ravine composed of strata of red sandstone, white<br />

silicious sandstone, and soft slaty rock, which decom-<br />

poses into a pure yellow ochreous earth. It is a vicar-<br />

age, in the diocese of Lismore, united to the rectory of<br />

Kilmurry, and in the gift of the Marquess of Ormonde,<br />

in whom the rectory is impropriate. The tithes amount<br />

to £380. 11. 11., of which £250. 7. 2. is payable to the<br />

vicar, and the remainder to the impropriator; the tithes<br />

of the benefice amount to £754. 19. 1. In the R. C.<br />

divisions it forms part of the union or district of Kil-<br />

grant or Riverstown, and contains a chapel. About 80<br />

children are educated in two schools, one of which is<br />

principally supported by Lady Osborne. The late W.<br />

Power, Esq., of Ballydino, left 30 acres of land and<br />

£5000 for the establishment of an almshouse, which is<br />

not yet finished. Here are some remains of the ancient<br />

church and of a castle, also a large moat.<br />

KILSHINANE, or KILLISHANE, a parish, in the<br />

barony of CLANMAURICE, county of KERRY, and pro-<br />

vince of MUNSTER, 5 miles (S.) from Listowel, on the<br />

road to Castleisland, containing 1668 inhabitants. It<br />

is bounded on the south-east by the Knockfodery, or<br />

Lackfodery, mountains; and consists chiefly of moun-<br />

tain pasture and bog: coal exists, but has not been<br />

worked. It is in the diocese of Ardfert and Aghadoe;<br />

the rectory is impropriate in the Earl of Cork, and the<br />

vicarage forms part of the union of Kilflyn. The tithes,<br />

amounting to £149.15.2., are payable in equal portions<br />

to the impropriator and the vicar. In the R. C. divi-<br />

sions the parish is partly included in the district of<br />

Listowel, but chiefly in that of Lixnaw. The ruins of<br />

the old church still exist in the burial-ground, near<br />

which is a holy well, resorted to by the peasantry for<br />

devotional purposes.<br />

KILSHINE, a parish, in the barony of MORGAL-<br />

LION, county of MEATH, and province of LEINSTER,<br />

7 miles (N. by W.) from Navan, on the road from<br />

Dublin to Kingscourt; containing 654 inhabitants.<br />

This parish was the scene of a skirmish during the dis-<br />

turbances of 1798. It comprises 1369 statute acres, as<br />

applotted under the tithe act, three-fourths of which<br />

are under a good system of tillage; there is some bog.<br />

Petty sessions are held at George’s Cross every Mon-<br />

day. Mountainstown House, the handsome residence<br />

of A. H. C. Pollock, Esq., is situated in a fine demesne<br />

of 300 plantation acres. The living is a rectory, in the<br />

diocese of Meath, united by act of council in 1809 to<br />

the rectory of Clongill, and in the patronage of the<br />

Crown and the Bishop, the former having one turn and<br />

the latter two. Although the rectories are thus nomi-<br />

nally united, they are held by two incumbents. The<br />

tithes amount to £92. 6. 2., and the value of the bene-<br />

fice is £284 per annum. The church, which is a very neat<br />

structure with a spire, was rebuilt by a gift of £800<br />

from the late Board of First Fruits, in 1815. The<br />

glebe-house is in Clongill, where there is a glebe of 21<br />

acres, valued at £63 per annum, besides a glebe in this<br />

parish of 7 acres, valued at £21. In the R. C. divi-<br />

sions it forms part of the union or district of Cas-<br />

tletown-Kilpatrick. There is a national school, in which<br />

about 90 children are educated, and to which Sir W.<br />

Plunket de Bathe, Bart., subscribes £15 per annum,<br />

besides allowing a house and ground.<br />

KILSILLAGH, a parish, in the barony of IBANE<br />

and BARRYROE, county of CORK, and province of<br />

MUNSTER, 6 miles (S. E. by S.) from Clonakilty; con-<br />

taining 166 inhabitants. This small parish, which is<br />

entirely surrounded by the parish of Lislee, comprises<br />
