province of Munster, 2 miles (S. E.) from Fethard, on<br />

the road to Clonmel; containing 771 inhabitants. It<br />

comprises about 2754 statute acres and is well cultivated.<br />

The principal seats are Clonacody, that of E. Kellett,<br />

Esq.; and Lakefield, of W. Pennefather, Esq.; both<br />

handsome residences. It is a vicarage, in the diocese<br />

of Lismore, forming part of the union of Cahir; the<br />

rectory is impropriate in the representatives of W.<br />

Netterville, Esq. The tithes amount to £160, of which<br />

£100 is payable to the impropriators and £60 to the<br />

vicar.<br />

GRANGE, a village, in the parish of Desert-<br />

creight, barony of Dungannon, county of Tyrone,<br />

and province of Ulster, 2½ miles (E) from Cooks-<br />

town, on the road from Stewartstown to Moneymore;<br />

containing 147 inhabitants. It comprises 32 houses,<br />

generally well built, and has a fair on Nov. 12th.<br />

Here is a meeting-house for Covenanters of the third<br />

class, and a school; and near the village is Killymoon,<br />

the elegant residence of Col. Stewart.<br />

GRANGE CLARE, an extra-parochial district, in<br />

the barony of East Ophaly, county of Kildare, and<br />

province of Leinster;containing 39 inhabitants.<br />

GRANGECLOVAN, or GRANGELORAN, a parish,<br />

in the barony of Fassadining, county of Kilkenny,<br />

and province of Leinster, 1 mile (S. W.) from Bally-<br />

ragget, on the river Nore; containing 949 inhabitants,<br />

and comprising 56ll½ statute acres. It is a rectory<br />

and vicarage, in the diocese of Ossory, forming part of<br />

the union of Burnchurch: the tithes amount to<br />

£247. 14. 11. In the R. C. divisions it is the head of<br />

a union or district, called Conahy, which includes this<br />

parish and Maine, and part of the parishes of Kilmocar,<br />

Coolcraheen, Three Castles, and Burnchurch; and has<br />

a chapel at Conahy.<br />

GRANGEFORTH, a parish, in the barony and<br />

county of Carlow, and province of Leinster, 2 miles<br />

(S. W. by S.) from Tullow, on the road to Carlow; con-<br />

taining 926 inhabitants. By inquisition taken in 1601<br />

it appears that it belonged to Fferdoroghe O’Gormo-<br />

gane, but it was granted to Sir John Ponsonby in 1669.<br />

It is a rectory, in the diocese of Leighlin, forming part<br />

of the union of Urglin: the tithes amount to £264.<br />

In the R. C. divisions it is part of the union or district<br />

of Tullow, and contains a chapel. There is a public<br />

school, in which about 150 children are educated.<br />

GRANGEGEETH, a parish, in the barony of Upper<br />

Slane, county of Meath, and province of Leinster,<br />

2½ miles (N.) from Slane; containing 1304 inhabitants.<br />

It is a rectory, in the diocese of Meath, entirely impro-<br />

priate in the Marquess of Drogheda, but it is tithe-free,<br />

from having formed part of the possessions of the abbey<br />

of Mellifont. In the R. C. divisions it is the head of<br />

a union or district, comprising this parish and Monk-<br />

newtown, in each of which is a chapel. There is a na-<br />

tional school, in which about 110 children are educated,<br />

and for which the school-house and an acre and a half<br />

of land were given by Sir J. Witchett; also a private<br />

school of about 120 children.<br />

GRANGE-KILREE, a parish, in the baronyof<br />

Shillelogher, county of Kilkenny, and province of<br />

Leinster, 5 miles (S.) from Kilkenny, on the road to<br />

West Jerpoint; containing 145 inhabitants and 1052<br />

statute acres. It is a rectory and vicarage, in the dio-<br />

cese of Ossory, forming part of the union of Burn-<br />

church: the tithes amount to £114. In the R. C. di-<br />

visions it is part of the union or district of Donemagan.<br />

GRANGE-MOCKLER, or NINE-MILE-HOUSE,<br />

a parish, in the barony of Slievardagh, county of<br />

Tipperary, and- province of Munster, 7 miles (S. by<br />

W.) from Callan, on the road to Clonmel; containing<br />

666 inhabitants. Fairs are held here on March 25th,<br />

May 20th, Aug. 10th, Sept. 19th, Oct. 8th, Nov. 1st,<br />

and Dec. 12th. It is a rectory, in the diocese of Lis-<br />

more, entirely impropriate in Caesar Sutton, Esq.: the<br />

tithes amount to £80, and the impropriator allows £4<br />

per ann. to the rector of Kilvemnon for the performance<br />

of the occasional duties. In the R. C. divisions it forms<br />

part of the union or district of Kilmurry, and has a<br />

chapel. There are three private schools, in which about<br />

160 children are educated.<br />

GRANGE O’NEILL, an extra-parochial district,<br />

locally in the parish of Kilmore, barony of Lower<br />

Orior, county of Armagh, and province of Ulster;<br />

containing 903 inhabitants, and more than 800 acres<br />

of excellent land. In ecclesiastical concerns it belongs<br />

to the lordship of Newry, and is under the jurisdiction<br />

of Lord Kilmorey, as abbot of Newry.<br />

GRANGEROSNOLVIN, a parish, in the barony of<br />

Kilkea and Moone, county of Kildare, and province<br />

of Leinster, 3 miles (S. W.) from Ballytore, on the<br />

road from Kilcullen to Castledermot; containing 114<br />

inhabitants. It comprises 1377 statute acres, as ap-<br />

plotted under the tithe act, and valued at £615 per<br />

annum. A nunnery is traditionally stated to have ex-<br />

isted here, but there are no traces of it. It is a rectory<br />

and vicarage, in the diocese of Dublin, forming part of<br />

the union of Castledermot: the tithes amount to £75.<br />

In the R. C. divisions also it is part of the union or dis-<br />

trict of Castledermot.<br />

GRANGE SILVAE, a parish, in the barony of<br />

Gowran, county of Kilkenny, and province of Lein-<br />

ster; containing, with the post-town of Goresbridge,<br />

2313 inhabitants. This parish, which is situated on<br />

the road from Carlow to Ross, and on the confines of<br />

the county of Carlow, is bounded on the east by the<br />

river Barrow, and comprises 7661 statute acres, as ap-<br />

plotted under the tithe act, and valued at £4566 per<br />

annum. The land is generally of good quality and<br />

principally under tillage, and the system of agriculture<br />

is improved. Limestone is found almost in every part<br />

of the parish, and worked for agricultural purposes,<br />

except towards the southern extremity, where the strata<br />

alternate with granite. The surface, except on the<br />

demesnes, is destitute of wood, with which, from its<br />

name, it would appear to have formerly abounded. The<br />

principal gentlemen’s seats are Barrowmount, formerly<br />

the residence of the late Col. Gore; Doninga, of T. T.<br />

Bookey, Esq.; and Barraghcore, of J. Handy, Esq., all<br />

handsome residences, with well-planted and improved<br />

demesnes. There are two large flour-mills, the property<br />

of Mr. Handy., worked by water and capable of producing<br />

40,000 barrels of flour annually. The Barrow naviga-<br />

tion, which commences at St. Mullins, about three<br />

miles below this parish, bounds it on the east and joins<br />

the Grand canal at Athy. Fairs are held at Goresbridge<br />

for cattle and pigs, and are numerously attended. The
