and chiefly under tillage; the system of agriculture is<br />

in that improved state which generally prevails in this<br />

part of the country; sea-weed, which is found in abun-<br />

dance, is the principal manure. The chief seats are Bal-<br />

lyhealy, the residence of Higatt Tench, Esq.; Wood-<br />

ville, of the Rev. R. King; and Sweetbriar Lodge, of<br />

Mr. J. Wilson. The lake is frequented by an abun-<br />

dance of wild ducks and other wild fowl. It is a vicar-<br />

age, in the diocese of Ferns, forming part of the union<br />

of Tomhaggard; the rectory is impropriate in Lord<br />

Robert Tottenham. The tithes amount to £188. 14. 7.,<br />

of which £108. 1. is payable to the impropriator, and<br />

£80. 13. 7. to the vicar. The church is a neat edifice;<br />

it had originally a tower, which fell down soon after<br />

its erection. In the R. C. divisions it is part of the<br />

union or district of Kilmore. A small school is partly<br />

supported by Mr. Day, who gives the use of the school-<br />

house rent-free. There are some remains of a castle<br />

originally of considerable extent, now consisting only<br />

of portions of two of the towers; the mound by which<br />

it was surrounded was levelled about 30 years since,<br />

and is now under cultivation.<br />

KILTYCLOGHER, or SARAHVILLE, a village,<br />

in the parish of CLONCLARE, barony of DROMAHAIRE,<br />

county of LEITRIM, and province of CONNAUGHT; con-<br />

taining 130 inhabitants. This village, which consists of<br />

about 25 houses, has been recently built by C. H. Tot-<br />

tenham, Esq., under the north-eastern range of the Glen-<br />

farne mountains. A market is held every Friday in a<br />

good market-house and is well attended, there being<br />

no otber within seven miles. Fairs are held on the<br />

14th of every month: here is a constabulary police<br />

station, and a R. C. chapel is in progress of erection.<br />

KILVARNET, a parish, in the barony of LINEY,<br />

county of SLIGO, and province of CONNAUGHT, 5 miles<br />

(N. by W.) from Ballymote, on the mountain road from<br />

Sligo to Ballina; containing 2360 inhabitants. This<br />

parish, which is situated on the river Owenmore, com-<br />

prises 2465 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe<br />

act. The surface is mountainous, and agriculture is in a<br />

backward state, but a considerable tract of mountain<br />

is gradually being reclaimed; there is a moderate quan-<br />

tity of bog, but little more than what is requisite for<br />

fuel; limestone is quarried both for building and agri-<br />

cultural purposes. The principal seats are Temple House,<br />

that of Col. A. Perceval, a handsome modern mansion,<br />

on the border of a fine lake and in an extensive and<br />

well-planted demesne, in which the ruins of the ancient<br />

house of Knights Templars, from which it takes its<br />

name, form an interesting object on the margin of the<br />

lake; Annachmore, of Major C. K. O’Hara, a hand-<br />

some residence delightfully situated in an ample de-<br />

mesne enlivened by the windings of the river Owenmore,<br />

over which is a handsome bridge, and commanding, from<br />

the summit of Cloyn Hill, a fine view of the course of<br />

the river, the distant hills of Knocknaree and Benbul-<br />

ben, the Ox mountains, and the picturesque hills of<br />

Knocknashee and Knockmuckleta, with much of the<br />

fine country in the neighbourhood; and Summerton, of<br />

the Rev. T. D. Carrol. The linen manufacture is carried<br />

on by individuals to a small extent, and there is a bleach-<br />

green at Ballinacarrow, where fairs are held on May 19th,<br />

June 16th, Oct. 14th, and Dec. 14th for cattle, pigs, and<br />

yarn; fairs are also held at Templehouse. Petty ses-<br />

sions are held at Coolany, where a penny post has been<br />

established. It is a vicarage, in the diocese of Achonry,<br />

forming part of the union of Killoran; the rectory<br />

is appropriate to the deanery. The tithes amount to<br />

£76. 12. 3¾., of which £35. 1. 6½ is payable to the dean<br />

of Achonry, and the remainder to the vicar. In the<br />

R. C. divisions it is part of the union or district of Col-<br />

looney; the chapel is at Ballinacarrow. There is a<br />

place of worship for Baptists. About 400 children are<br />

taught in four public schools, of which two are sup-<br />

ported by Col. Perceval and Major O’Hara; and there<br />

is a private school, in which are about 50 children. The<br />

preceptory of Knights Templars, anciently called Druim-<br />

ahradh and subsequently Teachtemple, was founded in<br />

the reign of Henry III., and on the suppression of that<br />

order was given by Edw. II. to the Knights Hospitallers.<br />

There are also some ruins of the old churches of Killo-<br />

ran and Kilvarnet.<br />

KILVEMNON, or KILMANANIFF, a parish, in<br />

the barony of SLIEVARDAGH, county of TIPPERARY,<br />

and province of MUNSTER, 5 miles (S. S. W.) from<br />

Callan, on the road to Fethard; containing 4530 inha-<br />

bitants. It comprises about 8100 statute acres, exclu-<br />

sively of about 1600 of bog; and includes within its<br />

limits part of the lofty mountain of Slieve-na-Man.<br />

About four-fifths of the land are arable, the remain-<br />

der pasture; it is moderately productive, but in many<br />

parts is low and wet; the surface is ornamented with<br />

some plantations and hedgerows. The river Anner has<br />

a subterraneous course for about a quarter of a mile,<br />

and works the Compsey Mill. The principal seats are<br />

Killaghy Castle, the residence of J. Despard, Esq.,<br />

which was the residence of Baron Tobin, and was taken<br />

by Cromwell, who gave it to a Col. Green, from whom<br />

it has descended to its present proprietor; Gurteen, of<br />

the Rev. W. O’Brien; the glebe-house, of the Rev. E.<br />

Labarte; and Ballylanigan, the property of the Cramer<br />

family. The living is a rectory and vicarage, in the<br />

diocese of Cashel, and in the gift of the Archbishop:<br />

the tithes amount to £675. 6. 6½. There is a glebe-<br />

house; with a glebe of 6 acres. The church is a plain<br />

structure. The R. C. parish is co-extensive with that<br />

of the Established Church, and is called Mullinahone,<br />

where there is a chapel. There are five private schools,<br />

in which about 330 children are educated.<br />

KILVINE, a parish, in the barony of CLANMORRIS,<br />

county of MAYO, and province of CONNAUGHT, 4½ miles<br />

(N. W.) from Dunmore, on the road to Ballinrobe;<br />

containing 1925 inhabitants. It comprises 5670 statute<br />

acres, principally under tillage, and contains a great<br />

quantity of bog and some waste land. The principal<br />

seats are Cartown, the residence of J. Sheridan, Esq.;<br />

Killan, of F.French, Esq.; Rockfort, of T. Sheridan,Esq.;<br />

and Oldtown Cottage, of W. Bourke, Esq. The living<br />

is a rectory and vicarage, in the diocese of Tuam, and<br />

in the patronage of the Archbishop; the tithes amount<br />

to £116. 6. 1¾. In the R. C. divisions the parish forms<br />

part of the union or district of Ballindangan. About<br />

110 children are educated in a private school.<br />

KILVOLANE, a parish, in the barony of OWNEY<br />

and ARRA, county of TIPPERARY, and province of<br />

MUNSTER, on the road from Thurles to Limerick; con-<br />

taining, with the post-town of Newport (which is sepa-<br />

rately described), 3802 inhabitants. It comprises 8568
