by aid of a gift of £300, and a loan of £900, from the<br />

late Board of First Fruits, in 1818; the glebe comprises<br />

five acres. In the R. C. divisions it is the head of a<br />

union or district, comprising also the parish of Tullo-<br />

haught, and containing a chapel at Windgap. The<br />

parochial school is aided by the rector, and at Garry-<br />

ricken is a public school, the house for which was built<br />

by the late Marquess of Ormonde. In these schools<br />

are about 70 children, and about 100 children are<br />

taught in a private school. A monastery of 1000<br />

monks is said to have anciently existed here. At<br />

Rossamery are the ruins of a small church.<br />

KILLAN, or KILLANNE, a parish, in the barony<br />

of BANTRY, county of WEXFORD, and province of<br />

LEINSTER, 6 miles (W. by N.) from Enniscorthy, on the<br />

high road from New Ross to Newtownbarry; contain-<br />

ing 2837 inhabitants. This parish comprises 9835<br />

statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act; the<br />

lands are principally under tillage, the soil is light, and<br />

the system of agriculture improving. There is BO waste<br />

land, except on the higher part of the mountain of<br />

Blackstairs, which bounds the parish on the west, sepa-<br />

rating the counties of Wexford and Carlow, and is<br />

cultivated to a considerable height from its base. At<br />

Woodbrook is a slate quarry, which has been worked<br />

occasionally for private purposes. Lime for manure is<br />

drawn from kilns at Gore’s-bridge, in the county of<br />

Kilkenny, a distance of 13 Irish miles. The principal<br />

seats are the Grange, the residence of Mrs. Richards,<br />

and Woodbrook, of Mrs. Blacker. The living is a rec-<br />

tory, in the diocese of Ferns, and in the patronage of<br />

the Bishop; the tithes amount to £477. 3. 7. The<br />

church, a handsome edifice in the early English style,<br />

with some later details, was erected in 1832, at an ex-<br />

pense of £1270, of which a loan of £1200 was granted<br />

by the late Board of First Fruits; the Ecclesiastical<br />

Commissioners have recently granted £116 for its<br />

repair. The late Board also gave £100 towards the<br />

erection of the glebe-house, an elegant modern villa,<br />

pleasantly situated in a plantation of beech and fir,<br />

and commanding a fine view of the White and Black-<br />

stairs mountains: the glebe comprises 33 acres. In<br />

the R. C. divisions the parish forms part of the union<br />

or district of Templeudigan, or Killegney; the chapel<br />

at Grange is a plain edifice. About 100 children are<br />

taught in the parochial school, which is supported by<br />

subscription; the school-house and an acre of land<br />

were given by the late Mr. Blacker: there is another<br />

public school of about 50 children, which has a house<br />

and two acres of land, rent free, from Mr. Colles; and<br />

about 200 children are taught in four private schools.<br />

A spinning association for the employment of the female<br />

poor is managed by a committee of ladies. Near the<br />

village of Killan is a holy well, dedicated to St. Anne,<br />

from whom the parish takes its name. There are<br />

several Danish raths.<br />

KILLANCOOLY, a parish, in the barony of BAL-<br />

LAGHKEEN, county of WEXFORD, and province of<br />

LEINSTER, 10½ miles (S. by E.) from Gorey, on the old<br />

road through Oulart to Wexford; containing 1204 in-<br />

habitants. This parish, which is situated on the south-<br />

eastern coast, comprises about 3000 statute acres, of<br />

which by far the greater part is under tillage, and the<br />

remainder consists of fine grazing tracts: the soil is in<br />

general loamy, the system of agriculture is improved;<br />

and butter and cheese are made in large quantities. A<br />

herring fishery is carried on at Tinabearny, in whkh<br />

about liven boats and 50 men from this and the ad-<br />

joining parish of Kilmuckridge are engaged. Wells<br />

House, the property of R. Doyne, Esq., was, for nearly<br />

three years after the disturbances of 1798, occupied as<br />

a barrack by the king’s troops; it is now about to be<br />

rebuilt in the Elizabethan style by the proprietor, as a<br />

residence, and will in future be called Wells Abbey. The<br />

parish is in the diocese of Ferns: it is an impropriate<br />

curacy, partly forming a portion of the union of Donagh-<br />

more, and partly annexed to the rectory of Kimemanagh,<br />

by the act of the 4th of Geo. IV.; the rectory is impro-<br />

priate in H. K. G. Morgan, Esq. It is intersected by<br />

the parish of Kilmuckridge; the portion adjoining Kilne-<br />

managh is annexed to that parish for the performance<br />

of the clerical duties, and the remainder to Donaghmore.<br />

The tithes amount to £190, payable to the impropriator.<br />

There are some remains of the old church. In the R. C.<br />

divisions it forms part of the union or district of Litter.<br />

KILLANE, or KILLIANE, also called KILLOEB-<br />

HAIN, a parish, in the barony of KILCONNELL, county<br />

of GALWAY, and province of CONNAUGHT, 9 miles (W.<br />

by S.) from Ballinasloe, on the road from Kilconnell to<br />

Ballymacward; containing 1317 inhabitants. It com-<br />

prises 7755 statute acres, and contains Woodlawn, the<br />

seat of J. Trench, Esq., where a mausoleum was erected<br />

by the late F. Trench, Esq., for his 21 children, for each<br />

of whom there is a separate vault. It is a vicarage, in<br />

the diocese of Clonfert, forming part of the union of<br />

Kilconnell; the rectory is appropriate to the see, the<br />

sacristan of Clonfert, the vicars choral of Christ Church,<br />

Dublin, and the vicarage. The tithes amount to<br />

£150. 1. 5½., of which £22. 15. 4½. is payable to the<br />

Ecclesiastical Commissioners, £9 to the sacristan, £50<br />

to the lessee of the vicars choral, and £68. 6. 1¾. to<br />

the incumbent. In the R. C. divisions it is the head of<br />

a union or district, called New Inn, which includes this<br />

parish and Bullane, in each of which is a chapel. About<br />

150 children are educated in a public school, to which<br />

Lord Ashtown contributes £26 per annum, and about<br />

60 in two private schools.<br />

KILLANEAR, or KILNANARE, a parish, in the<br />

barony of MAGONIHY, county of KERRY, and province<br />

of MUNSTER, 3 miles (E. N. E.) from Milltown, on the<br />

river Maine, and on the old post road from Tralee to<br />

Killarney; containing 1776 inhabitants. It comprises<br />

4993 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act:<br />

the land is in general good, and chiefly in tillage; lime-<br />

stone abounds and is used for manure, and the state of<br />

agriculture is improving: there are a few patches of<br />

bog. At Clonmellane is a station of the constabulary<br />

police. The living is a vicarage, in the diocese of Ard-<br />

fert and Agbadoe, and in the patronage of the Bishop;<br />

the rectory forms part of the union and corps of the<br />

deanery. The tithes amount to £184. 13. 3., payable<br />

in equal portions to the dean and vicar. There is nei-<br />

ther church, glebe-house, nor glebe. In the R. C. divi-<br />

sions this parish forms part of the union or district of<br />

Fieries. In a public school supported by subscription<br />

about 50, and in two private schools about 70, children<br />

are educated. The ruins of the old church still remain<br />

in the burial-ground; and those of Clonmellane castle<br />

stand near the river Maine.
