at a short distance to the north of it is a R. C. chapel,<br />

belonging to the union of Bryansford or Lower Kilcoo;<br />

it is a neat edifice in the later English style, erected in.<br />

1831 at an expense of £900, on a site given by the Earl<br />

of Roden. A school for boys, built in 1826, is sup-<br />

ported by the same nobleman; and adjoining it is a<br />

circulating library also maintained by the Earl and<br />

gratuitously open to all the people of the village: there<br />

is a female school, built in 1822 and supported wholly<br />

by the Countess of Roden.—See KILCOO.<br />

BUCHOLLA.—See BOHOLA.<br />

BULGADINE, a parish, in the barony of COSTLEA,<br />

county of LIMERICK, and province of MUNSTER, 3 miles<br />

(N.) from Kilmallock; containing 1152 inhabitants. In<br />

the ecclesiastical divisions this is not known as a se-<br />

parate parish, being regarded as forming part of the<br />

parishes of Uregare, Kilbreedy-Major, and Athnassey:<br />

it comprises 3395 statute acres, as applotted under the<br />

tithe act. The occupiers of laud in this neighbourhood<br />

are subjected to a penalty of £10 per acre if more than<br />

two acres out of every twenty are tilled; hence the<br />

meadows and pastures are very extensive, and are con-<br />

sidered as the most fertile in the county. Near the<br />

village, which is very small, consisting only of a few<br />

thatched houses, is the ancient and neglected mansion<br />

of the family of Evans, now the property of Lord Car-<br />

bery, which, though at present in a state of miserable<br />

dilapidation, Was formerly one of the most magnificent<br />

residences in the province. In the R. C. divisions this<br />

place is partly in the union or district of Kilmallock; and<br />

partly in that of Athnassey or Ballinvana; it contains a<br />

chapel “for this part of the union.<br />

BULLANE, a parish, in the barony of ATHENRY,<br />

county of GALWAY, and province of CONNAUGHT, 4½<br />

miles (N.) from Loughrea; containing 551 inhabitants.<br />

This parish is situated on the road from Loughrea to<br />

Castle-Blakeney, and comprises 1283 statute acres, as<br />

applotted under the tithe act. It is a rectory and vicar-<br />

age, in the diocese of Clonfert, partly appropriate to<br />

the prebend of Annacalla, partly to the sacristy of the<br />

cathedral of Clonfert, and partly included in the union<br />

of Kilcolgan, in the diocese of Kilmacduagh. The tithes<br />

amount to £46, of which £23 is payable to the pre-<br />

bendary of Annacalla, £12 to the sacristan, and £11 to<br />

the incumbent of Kilcolgan. In the R. C. divisions it<br />

is part of the union or district of New Inn, and contains<br />

a chapel.<br />

BULLOCK, BLOYKE, or BULLOG, a village, in<br />

the parish of MONKSTOWN, half-barony of RATHDOWN,<br />

county of DUBLIN, and province of LEINSTER, 6¾miles<br />

S. B.) from Dublin: the population is returned with<br />

the parish. This place, which is now only a small fishing<br />

village, situated close to the southern shore of Dublin<br />

bay, was formerly defended by a castle of considerable<br />

extent. The period of its erection is unknown, though<br />

it is supposed to be co-eval with those of Dalkey; it is<br />

an octangular building, having but few windows and<br />

surmounted by a graduated parapet. Near it is a neat<br />

residence occupied by Capt. Hutchinson; and in the<br />

vicinity is Perrin Castle, the residence of Alderman<br />

Perrin, a handsome building in the castellated style,<br />

beautifully situated in grounds tastefully laid out and com-<br />

manding some fine mountain and sea views. The Ballast<br />

Board of Dublin have a small quay here for shipping<br />

granite, with which this neighbourhood abounds. On<br />

blasting the rocks, a large quantity of silver coins was<br />

found a few years since. The fishery, at the commence-<br />

ment of the present century, employed several yawls in<br />

taking whiting, pollock, and herrings; at present there<br />

are about ten yawls belonging to the village.—See<br />

BUMBOA HALL, a small village, in the parish of<br />

BALLYNURE, barony of UPPER TALBOTSTOWN, county<br />

of WICKLOW, and province of LEINSTER, 3 miles (N.)<br />

from Baltinglass; containing 81 inhabitants. It is<br />

situated on the road from Baltinglass to Ballitore, and<br />

contains a good house called the Hall, the residence of<br />

Stephen Wilson, Esq. Near it are Ballynure and<br />

Grange-Con, the former the seat of H. Carroll, Esq., and<br />

the latter, till of late, the residence of H. Harrington,<br />

Esq. A peace preservation force is stationed in the<br />

village; and there is a neat R. C. chapel belonging to<br />

the union or district of Baltinglass, with a school ad-<br />

joining it.—See BALLYNURE.<br />

BUMLIN, or STROKESTOWN, a parish, in the<br />

barony and county of ROSCOMMON, and province of<br />

CONNAUGHT; containing, with the market and post-<br />

town of Strokestown, 4913 inhabitants. This parish is<br />

situated on the new mail coach road from Dublin to the<br />

West of Ireland, and comprises 4399 statute acres, as<br />

applotted under the tithe act and valued at £4038 per<br />

annum. Part of Slievebawn mountain is situated within<br />

its limits, the summit of which towards the east com-<br />

mands a most extensive view. The land is chiefly under<br />

tillage; limestone abounds, and there are considerable<br />

tracts of bog. Castlenode is the seat of J. Morton, Esq.<br />

The living is a vicarage, in the diocese of Elphin, to<br />

which the vicarages of Kiltrustan and Lissonuffy were<br />

episcopally united in 1811, which three parishes form<br />

the union of Bumlin, in the patronage of the Bishop:<br />

the rectory is partly appropriate to the prebendary of<br />

Kilgoghlin in the cathedral church of Elphin, but chiefly<br />

impropriate in C. and R. Armstrong, Esqrs. The tithes<br />

amount to £285. 3. 9., of which £100.3.5. is payable to<br />

the impropriators, £21 to the prebendary, and £164.0. 4.<br />

to the vicar; and the gross vicarial tithes of the benefice<br />

amount to £533. 14. 7½.; the annual income of the pre-<br />

bendary of Kilgoghlin is £310. 14. 2. The church,<br />

situated at Strokestown, is a handsome edifice with a<br />

spire, built in 1814 by aid of a loan of £2700 from the<br />

late Board of First Fruits. The glebe-house was also<br />

built by a gift of £337 and a loan of £150 from the same<br />

Board: the glebe comprises ten acres. In the R. C.<br />

divisions this parish is the head of a union or district,<br />

comprising also the parish of Kiltrustan, and containing<br />

three chapels, situated at Strokestown, Scramogue, and<br />

Kiltrustan, the two former in the parish of Bumlin, The<br />

parochial school, in which are about 50 children, is<br />

chiefly supported by the vicar and by private subscrip-<br />

tions; there are also seven hedge schools, in which about<br />

100 boys and 90 girls are taught. The late B. Mahon,<br />

Esq., bequeathed £800 late currency for the benefit of<br />

the poor of the three parishes forming the union.—<br />

BUNCRANA, a market and post-town, in the parish<br />

of LOWER FAHAN, barony of ENNISIIOWEN, county of<br />

DONEGAL, and province of ULSTER, 11 miles (N. N.W.)<br />

from Londonderry, and 129½ miles (N. W. byN.) from<br />

Dublin; containing 1059 inhabitants. Though of some
