and two other schools, supported by subscription, in<br />

which are about 200 boys and 100 girls; and there are<br />

also two Sunday schools. The remains of the former<br />

church, with the exception of the roof, are in good pre-<br />

servation, and form a picturesque and interesting object.<br />

Near the eastern end is a remarkably large ash tree,<br />

beneath the shade of which are deposited the remains<br />

of Florence Mac Moyer, otherwise Mac Wire or Mac<br />

Guire, a Franciscan friar, upon whose evidence Primate<br />

Plunket was executed at Tyburn in 1690. Some years<br />

since, a cairn was opened here and found to contain two<br />

separate tombs, in one of which were two urns of ele-<br />

gant form and workmanship containing ashes; one of<br />

them is in the possession of Mr. Synnot, of Ballymoyer<br />

Lodge, who has also a variety of ancient coins found in<br />

the neighbourhood, and some curiously marked stones,<br />

found in the large cairn of Mullyash, in the county of<br />

Monaghan.<br />

BALLYMURRY, a village, in the parish of KIL-<br />

MEAN, barony of ATHLONE, county of ROSCOMMON, and<br />

province of CONNAUGHT, 3 miles (S. S. E.) from Ros-<br />

common: the population is returned with the parish.<br />

This village is situated on the road from Roscommon<br />

to Athlone, and consists of a few neatly built houses<br />

and about 20 cabins. It has a neat and improving<br />

appearance, and is kept remarkably clean; the manu-<br />

facture of pottery is carried on to a moderate extent.<br />

The parish R. C. chapel, a thatched building in good<br />

repair, and a place of worship for the Society of Friends,<br />

are situated in the village; here is also the parochial<br />

school, under the patronage of Lord Crofton.—See<br />

KILMEAN.<br />

BALLYNACLOGH, or DOLLARDSTOWN, a parish,<br />

in the barony of COONAGH, county of LIMERICK, and<br />

province of MUNSTER, 1 ½ mile (N. by W.) from Pallas-<br />

Greine, on the road from Limerick to Tipperary; con-<br />

taining 211 inhabitants. The land is everywhere of<br />

good quality, being mostly based on limestone. It is a<br />

rectory, in the diocese of Emly, forming the corps<br />

of the prebend of Ballynaclogh in the cathedral of<br />

Emly, and one of the rectories that constitute the union<br />

of Dromkeen and corps of the archdeaconry of Emly:<br />

the tithes amount to £46. In the R. C. divisions it is<br />

within the union of Greine, or Pallas-Greine; the chapel<br />

is situated in the little village of Nicker.<br />

BALLYNACLOUGH, a parish, in the barony of<br />

UPPER ORMOND, county of TIPPERARY, and province of<br />

MUNSTER, 3 miles (S. E.) from Nenagh; containing 1149<br />

inhabitants. This parish is situated on the river Arra,<br />

which falls into the Shannon at Drominear, and com-<br />

prises 3701 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe<br />

act: the land is all arable and pasture, the soil fertile,<br />

and the system of agriculture much improved. Lime-<br />

stone abounds, and a marble quarry has recently been<br />

reopened on the demesnes of Debsborough and Ballyna-<br />

clough, with a prospect of its being extensively worked;<br />

the marble is both of red and grey colour, and of very<br />

fine quality. There is a small corn-mill. Debsborough,<br />

the seat of J. Bayly, Esq., is pleasantly situated in a<br />

demesne tastefully laid out and well planted: the other<br />

seats are Ballynaclough, that of R. N. Bayly, Esq., and<br />

Bayly Farm, of Mrs. Bayly. A constabulary police force<br />

has been stationed in the parish. The living is a vica-<br />

rage, in the diocese of Killaloe, united, since the foun-<br />

dation of the deanery, to the entire rectories of Dromi-<br />

near and Kilkeary, and the vicarage of Terryglass, which<br />

four parishes constitute the union of Ballynaclough and<br />

the corps of the deanery of Killaloe, in the patronage of<br />

the Crown: the rectory is impropriate in the Rev.<br />

Daniel and Mrs. Wall, and the Misses Elizabeth, and<br />

Harriet Hardy: the tithes amount to £235, of which<br />

£156. 13. 4. is payable to the impropriators, and<br />

£78. 6. 8. to the dean; and the tithes of the whole<br />

benefice amount to £408. 6. 8. The church, a neat<br />

modern edifice, was erected by aid of a gift of £500<br />

from the late Board of First Fruits, in 1815. The<br />

glebe-house is situated on a glebe of 7a. 1r. 18½ p., and<br />

there is also a glebe of 15 acres in Terryglass. In the R.C.<br />

divisions this parish forms part of the union or district of<br />

Kilmore; the chapel is a modern building, situated on<br />

the townland of Ballyquiveane. There is a parochial<br />

school of about 20 boys and 20 girls, supported by the<br />

dean and John Bayly, Esq.,; and there are two pay<br />

schools, in which are about 80 boys and 10 girls. The<br />

poor have the benefit of the dispensaries at Nenagh and<br />

Silvermines. There are some remains of the old church<br />

adjoining the present structure, and also of the castle<br />

of Ballynaclough, which have a picturesque effect.<br />

BALLYNACRAGGY, a hamlet, in the parish of<br />

DROMCREEHY, barony of BURREN, county of CLARE,<br />

and province of MUNSTER, 3 miles (W.) from Burren;<br />

containing 19 houses and 123 inhabitants. This place,<br />

which derives its name from an ancient castle, of which<br />

there are some remains, is situated on the road from<br />

Burren to Ballyvaughan. A school is about to be esta-<br />

blished, for which purpose Captain Kirwan has given the<br />

site and £10 towards the erection of the building.—See<br />

BALLYNADRIMNA, a parish, in the barony of<br />

CARBERY, county of KILDARE, and province of LEIN-<br />

STER, 3 miles (W.) from Enfield; containing 1503 inha-<br />

bitants. This parish is situated on the road from Kil-<br />

cock to Kinnegad, and contains Garriska House, the<br />

property of C. Nangle, Esq. It is a vicarage, in the<br />

diocese of Kildare, and is part of the union of Castle-<br />

Carbery; the rectory is impropriate in the Marquess of<br />

Downshire: the tithes amount to £92. 6.10 ¼. In the<br />

R. C. divisions it forms part of the union or district of<br />

Ballyna or Johnstown; the chapel, a neat building, is at<br />

Garriska. There is a school at Broadford, in which are<br />

60 boys and 60 girls.<br />

BALLYNAHAGLISH, a parish, in the barony of<br />

TRUGHENACKMY, county of KERRY, and province of<br />

MUNSTER, 5½ miles (W.) from Tralee; containing 2883<br />

inhabitants. This parish, is situated on the bay of Tralee,<br />

and comprises 2875 statute acres, as applotted under<br />

the tithe act; the land is chiefly under tillage, produc-<br />

ing excellent crops, and the system of agriculture has<br />

been greatly improved within the last few years; sea-<br />

weed and sand are extensively used as manure, and good<br />

limestone, of a kind approaching to grey marble, is also<br />

obtained. The seats are Oyster Hall, that of Barry<br />

Collins, Esq., and Oyster Lodge, of— Nelligan, Esq. The<br />

village of Taulert, or Chapeltown, lies on the south-east-<br />

ern shore of the creek or harbour of Barra, and is partly<br />

inhabited by fishermen. On account of the fine bathing<br />

strand in Tralee bay, and a chalybeate spring of great<br />

power on the border of the parish and adjoining Clog-<br />

herbrien, it is much frequented during the summer by<br />
