KILLANEY, or KILLENEY, a parish, in the barony<br />

of UPPER CASTLEREAGH, county of DOWN, and province<br />

of ULSTER, 4 miles (W. by S.) from Saintfield, on the<br />

road from that place to Ballinahinch; containing 1298<br />

inhabitants. According to the Ordnance survey, it<br />

comprises 2859 statute acres, of which 68¼ are water:<br />

the land is good, and under an excellent system of cul-<br />

tivation, producing abundant crops. The living is a<br />

vicarage, in the diocese of Down, and in the patronage<br />

of the Marquess of Downshire, in whom the rectory is<br />

impropriate: the tithes amount to £85. There is nei-<br />

ther church, glebe-house, nor glebe. The church was<br />

greatly injured in 1641, and is now in ruins, but divine<br />

service is regularly performed in the parochial school-<br />

house. There is a Presbyterian meeting-house. The<br />

parochial school is supported by the Marquess of Down-<br />

shire and the vicar. The school-house was built by<br />

subscription; about 30 children are educated in it and<br />

100 in a private school; and there is a Sunday school.<br />

KILLANEY, a parish, partly in the barony of<br />

ARDEE, county of LOUTH, and province of LEINSTER,<br />

but chiefly in the barony of FARNEY, county of MONAG-<br />

HAN, and province of ULSTER, 2 miles (E. by S.) from<br />

Carrickmacross, on the road from Carrick to Dundalk;<br />

containing 4S23 inhabitants, of which number 1424 are<br />

in Louth. The rivers Glyde and Ballymackney flow<br />

through this parish; and the Earl of Essex had an<br />

interview, in 1599, at Essexford, with O’Nial, Earl of<br />

Tyrone. It comprises, according to the Ordnance sur-<br />

vey (including 167¾ acres in the detached townland of<br />

Essexford, and 106¼ under water), 7127¼statute acres,<br />

of which 1939¼ are in Louth, and 5188 in Monaghan;<br />

5-870 acres are applotted under the tithe act, and<br />

chiefly in tillage, and 500 acres consist of bog. The<br />

principal seats are Moynalty, the residence of T. M c<br />

Evoy Gartland, Esq., and Ballymackney House, of W.<br />

Daniel, Esq. The living is a rectory and vicarage, in<br />

the diocese of Clogher, and in the patronage of the<br />

Bishop; the tithes amount to £461. 10. 9¼. The<br />

church is a small ancient structure. There is a glebe-<br />

house, with a glebe of 90 acres. In the R. C. divisions<br />

this parish is partly in the union or district of Carrick-<br />

macross, and partly the head of a district, comprising<br />

also three or four townlands in the parish of Louth; it<br />

contains two chapels, one at Corcreagh, belonging to<br />

the Carrickmacross district, and the other in the village<br />

of Killaney. About 270 children are educated in five<br />

private schools, and there is a Sunday school. Here<br />

are the ruins of an ancient church, and of a fortification<br />

on a conical hill, called Mount Killaney.<br />

KILLANIN, a parish, in the barony of MOYCULLEN,<br />

county of GALWAY, and province of CONNAUGHT, 11<br />

miles (W.) from Galway containing 8967 inhabitants.<br />

This is a very extensive parish, but as it contains large<br />

tracts of bog and mountain, only 6841 statute acres are<br />

rated in the county books. It is situated at the entrance<br />

to the bay of Galway, extending to Lough Corrib, and<br />

comprehends the islands of Garomna and Littermore,<br />

and the bays of Casleh, Scalp, and Bunahown. Here<br />

is Ross, the seat of R. Martin, Esq. It is a vicarage,<br />

in the diocese of Tuam, forming part of the union of<br />

Ballynakill; the rectory is impropriate in T. Martin,<br />

Esq., and the tithes amount to £45. The R. C. parish<br />

is co-extensive with that of the Established Church,<br />

and contains a chapel: divine service is also performed<br />

in private houses at Rossmuck and Littermore. About<br />

150 children are educated in four private schools.<br />

Here was formerly the castle of Bunown, a principal<br />

seat of the O’Flahertys.<br />

KILLANULLY, or KILLINGLEY, a parish, partly<br />

in the barony of KERRICURRIHY, county of CORK, and<br />

partly in the county of the city of CORK, and province<br />

of MUNSTER, 5 miles (S.) from Cork, on the road from<br />

Carrigaline to Ballyhassig; containing 631 inhabitants.<br />

This parish, which is entirely surrounded by Carriga-<br />

line, comprises 2004 statute acres, as applotted under<br />

the tithe act, and valued at £1886 per annum. The<br />

soil is good and chiefly under tillage, and the system of<br />

agriculture is improving: there is plenty of good lime-<br />

stone. Here are the Kilnahow flour-mills. The living<br />

is a rectory in the diocese of Cork, forming the corps<br />

of the prebend of Killanully in Cork cathedral, and in<br />

the patronage of the Bishop; the tithes amount to<br />

£170. The church is in ruins, but divine service is<br />

performed in a school-room licensed by the bishop.<br />

The glebe comprises 1¾ acre. In the R. C. divisions<br />

the parish forms part of the union or district of Bally-<br />

garvan. There is a parochial school for boys and girls,<br />

which was built by Lord Mount-Sandford and W. H. W.<br />

Newenham, Esq., and is entirely supported by the latter;<br />

about 50 children are educated in it, and there is also<br />

a Sunday school. In the cemetery of the old church is<br />

the grave of Father Florence. M c Carthy, who died about<br />

1814, which is much visited by pilgrims; and near the<br />

churchyard is a holy well.<br />

KILLARAGHT, a parish, in the half-barony of COOL-<br />

AVIN, county of SLIGO, and province of CONNAUGHT,<br />

4 miles (S. W.) from Boyle, on the road from that place<br />

to Frenchpark containing 1986 inhabitants. This place<br />

is said to derive its name from a nunnery founded here<br />

by St. Patrick for St. Athracta, sister of St. Coeman,<br />

who received the veil from him in 470. It is situated on<br />

the southern shore of Lough Gara, and consists chiefly<br />

of pasture land. The principal seats are Lisserlough,<br />

the residence of Jacob Powell, Esq.; Ardgallan, of<br />

Harlow P. Baker, Esq.; and Ratarman, of J. Flanagan,<br />

Esq. It is a vicarage, in the diocese of Achonry, epis-<br />

copally united to those of Kilfree and Kilshalvea; the<br />

rectory is impropriate in Viscount Lorton. The tithes<br />

amount to £150, of which £56. 9. 3½. is payable to the<br />

impropriator, and £93. 10. 8½. to the vicar. There is a<br />

glebe of 3½ acres. In the R. C. divisions it forms part of<br />

the union or district of Gurteen, and has a chapel at<br />

Cloonlagh. About 90 children are educated in a school<br />

that is aided by Lord Lorton. At Templeoran are the<br />

ruins of a church, with a burial-place attached.<br />

KILLARARAN, or KILRONAN, a parish, in the<br />

barony of KILLIAN, county of GALWAY, and province of<br />

CONNAUGHT, 2¾ miles (N. E.) from Ballinamore, on the<br />

road from that place to Roscommon; containing 4777<br />

inhabitants, and 8300 statute acres. The river Shiven<br />

runs through part of this parish, which contains a large,<br />

quantity of bog. Petty sessions are held on alternate.<br />

Tuesdays at Ballygan. The principal seats are Ballina-<br />

more House, the residence of the Hon. Martin Ffrench;<br />

Ballinglass of N. Darcy, Esq.; Castle Kelly, of D. H.<br />

Kelly, Esq.; and Riversdale, of John Kelly, Esq. It is<br />

a vicarage, in the diocese of Elphin, forming part of<br />

the union of Killian; the rectory is impropriate in<br />

Viscount Kingsland. The tithes amount to £148, which
