moss and plants; and there are some extraordinary<br />

subterranean caverns, which were explored in 1826 by<br />

Sir. A. de Capell Brooke.<br />

KILLEANY, county of CLARE.—See KILHENY.<br />

KILLEANY, or KILLANEY, a village, in the parish<br />

of ARRANMORE, barony of ARRAN, county of GALWAY,<br />

and province of CONNAUGHT, on the north-east side of<br />

the island of Arranmore; containing 974 inhabitants.<br />

It is a coast-guard station in the Galway district, and<br />

is also a station for pilots. The inhabitants are gene-<br />

rally fishermen, who have 39 hookers for fishing and<br />

carrying kelp to Galway: there is a small pier at the<br />

upper end of the bay.—See ARRAN ISLANDS.<br />

KILLEANY, a parish, in the barony of STRAD-<br />

BALLY, QUEEN’S county, and province of LEINSTER,<br />

3 miles (N.) from Stradbally, on the road from that<br />

place to Portarlington; containing 121 inhabitants.<br />

Petty sessions for the district are held here irregularly.<br />

The living is a rectory, in the diocese of Leighlin, and<br />

in the patronage of the Bishop: the tithes amount to<br />

£50. In the R. C. divisions it forms part of the union,<br />

or district of Stradbally. There are some remains of<br />

the ancient castle.<br />

KILLEARY, a parish, in the barony of LOWER<br />

SLANE, county of MEATH, and province of LEINSTER,<br />

4 miles (S. E. by S.) from Nobber, on the road from<br />

Navan to Ardee; containing 2343 inhabitants. It<br />

comprises 7860 statute acres, and includes Parsonstown,<br />

the property of the Rev. A. Blackburne, a handsome<br />

residence in a demesne of above 600 statute acres. It<br />

is a vicarage, in the diocese of Meath, forming part of<br />

the union of Syddan; the rectory is in the patronage of<br />

the Crown and the Bishop. The tithes amount to<br />

£323. 1. 6¼. of which £212. 6.,l¾. is payable to the<br />

rector and the remainder to the vicar, who has a glebe<br />

of 3a. 2r. I6p. In the R. C. divisions it is the head of<br />

a union or district called Lobinstown, comprising also<br />

the parishes of Syddan, Innismoth, and Mitchellstown,<br />

and containing chapels at Lobinstown and Heronstown.<br />

About 30 children are educated in a public and 160 in<br />

four private schools.<br />

KILLEBAN, or KILLABIN, a parish, partly in the<br />

barony of BALLYABAMS, but chiefly in that of SLIEU-<br />

MARGUE, QUEEN’S county and province of LEINSTER,<br />

3 miles (S. by W.) from Athy, on the road from that<br />

place to Kilkenny; containing 9776 inhabitants. It<br />

includes the villages of Aries, Ballylinan, and Ballick-<br />

moyler, which are separately described, and comprises<br />

24,749 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act.<br />

The land is generally fertile, and chiefly in pasture, with<br />

some bog and mountain; the system of agriculture is<br />

improving. Limestone, flag-stone, and sandstone are<br />

quarried, and at Newtown are extensive collieries: there<br />

are also collieries at Modubah, Tellerton, Corgeo, and<br />

Hunt’s Park. Fairs are held at Mayo on June 29th<br />

and Oct. 18th; and a manorial court is held at New-<br />

town. The principal seats are Cooper Hill, the resi-<br />

dence of W. Cope Cooper, Esq.; Ashfield Hall, of P.<br />

Gale, Esq.; Rahin, of Lieut.-Col. Weldon; Tollerton,<br />

of Hovendon Stapleton, Esq.; Killeen, of M. Dillon<br />

Thomas, Esq.; Maidenhead, of the Bambrick family;<br />

Ardeateagle, of W. Fitzmaurice, Esq.; and Hollymount,<br />

of W. Fishbourne, Esq. The living is a rectory, in the<br />

diocese of Leighlin, and in the gift of the Crown. The<br />

tithes amount to £1292. 6. 1½. Here are two churches,<br />

one at Castletown and the other at Mayo, for the erec-<br />

tion of one of which the late Board of First Fruits, in<br />

1813, gave £800; and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners<br />

have lately granted £108 for the repairs of that at<br />

Castletown, and £172 for that at Mayo. There is nei-<br />

ther glebe-house nor glebe. In the R. C. divisions the<br />

parish forms the head of two unions or districts, one<br />

called Ballylinan and Aries, which has chapels at those<br />

places and at Killean; the other called Mayo and<br />

Doonane, which is united with the parish of Rathaspick,<br />

and has chapels at Mayo and Doonane. About 400<br />

children are educated in four public schools, to three of<br />

which the rector subscribes, and 640 in 16 private<br />

schools; there are also six Sunday schools. St. Abban<br />

founded a monastery here in 650, in which he is said to<br />

have been interred: there are some remains of its<br />

church. There are also remains of the old church of<br />

Aries, and of the ancient castle of Hovendon, over the<br />

entrance to which are quartered the arms of the Leins-<br />

ter and Ormonde families. Near Castletown church is<br />

a well, which supplies water enough to turn a mill in<br />

its immediate vicinity.<br />

KILLEDAN, or KILLEDIN, a parish, in the ba-<br />

rony of GALLEN, county of MAYO, and province of<br />

CONNAUGHT, 5 miles (W. by S.) from Swinford, on the<br />

road from that place to Ballagh; containing 5741 inha-<br />

bitants. Some of the land is very good and well culti-<br />

vated, but there are large tracts of bog. A market on<br />

Thursday has been lately established at the village of<br />

Cultymough, or Newtown-Brown. The principal seats<br />

are Ballinamore, the residence of T. Ormsby, Esq.;<br />

Killedan, of F. Taaffe, Esq.; Anna Hill, of Mrs. Scully,<br />

and Oxford, the property of — Twyhee, Esq. It is a<br />

vicarage, in the diocese of Achonry, forming part of the<br />

union of Templemore; the rectory is impropriate in the<br />

representatives of R. Palmer, Esq. The tithes amount<br />

to £411. 11. 4., which is equally divided between the<br />

impropriators and the vicar. The church is a neat<br />

building, erected at Ballinamore by the Ormsby family.<br />

The R. C. parish is co-extensive with that of the Esta-<br />

blished Church, and has a chapel at Cultymough.<br />

About 120 children are educated in a public school, to<br />

which T. Ormsby, Esq., contributes £14 annually, and<br />

about 540 in four private schools. Here was a friary of<br />

conventual Franciscans, which existed till the Reforma-<br />

tion. There are some remains of the old church.<br />

KILLEDMUND, a village, in the parish of KILTEN-<br />

NEL, barony of IDRONE EAST, county of CARLOW, and<br />

province of LEINSTER, on the road from Myshall to<br />

Enniscorthy; containing 47 houses and 236 inhabitants.<br />

This place, being situated at the western foot of Mount<br />

Leinster, includes within its scenery the Blackstairs<br />

mountains and Scullogh Gap: during the disturbances<br />

of 1798 it was burnt by the insurgents. It contains the<br />

parish church and school, and has fairs on March 12th,<br />

and July 15th.<br />

KILLEEDY, a parish, in the Glenquin Division of<br />

the barony of UPPER CONNELLO, county of LIMERICK,<br />

and province of MUNSTER, 4 miles (S.) from Newcastle,<br />

on the road from that place to Newmarket; containing<br />

5420 inhabitants. The castle of Glenquin, which gives<br />

name to this division of the barony, was built by an
