the parish of Kilbrin. In the R, C. divisions the parish<br />

is the head of a union, comprising also the parish of<br />

Churchtown or Bruhenny; the chapel, an old building,<br />

is about to be repaired and enlarged; there is also<br />

a chapel at Churchtown. About SO children, are<br />

taught in a national school; and there are two<br />

private schools, in which are about 200 children.<br />

There are very considerable remains of the ancient<br />

eastle, which was a quadrangular building, 240 feet<br />

long and 120 feet wide, enclosed with walls 30 feet high<br />

and defended with two square and four round towers<br />

of great strength, parts of which are still remaining.<br />

Near the barracks are some remarkable fissures in the<br />

limestone rock; about a mile from the town is a fissure<br />

of great depth, called Kate’s Hole, which is now<br />

closed up; and at Coolbane, to the west of it, is a large<br />

rath, now neatly planted, where it is said 17 of the<br />

relatives of Garret Fitzgerald, of the house of Desmond,<br />

killed in the seige of the castle, were interred.<br />

LISCARTIN, a parish, in the barony of LOWER<br />

NAVAN, county of MEATH, and province of LEINSTER,<br />

2½ miles (N. W.) from Navan, on the river Blackwater,<br />

and on the mail road from Dublin to Enniskillen; con-<br />

taining 229 inhabitants. It comprises 1188 statute<br />

acres, as applotted under the tithe act, of good quality<br />

and chiefly in tillage. Liscartin castle, supposed to<br />

have been originally a monastic building, was the birth<br />

place of the first Lord Cadogan, to which family it still<br />

belongs; part of it now constitutes the residence of<br />

T. Gerrard, Esq., the proprietor of a large flour-mill in<br />

the vicinity; the outworks of the castle were con-<br />

siderable, and a gateway still remains, about 60 yards<br />

distant from the main building. Bachelor’s Lodge,<br />

the neat residence of John Wade, Esq., is also in this<br />

parish. It is a rectory, in the diocese of Meath, form-<br />

ing part of the union of Ardbraccan; the tithes amount<br />

to £69. 4. 7½. In the R. C. divisions also it is part of<br />

the union or district of Ardbraccan, also called Boher-<br />

rneen.<br />

LISCLEARY, or LISLEY COLERIGGE, a parish,<br />

in the barony of KERRICURRIHY, county of CORK, and<br />

province of MUNSTER, 2½ miles (W.) from Carrigaline,<br />

on the south side of the river Awinboy; containing<br />

2804 inhabitants. It comprises 4217 statute acres, as<br />

applotted under the tithe act, and valued at £4025 per<br />

ann., and is divided into two parts by the intervening<br />

parish of Carrigaline. The surface is undulating, and<br />

the soil in general good; besides lime, sea-weed and<br />

sand brought from Carrigaline are used for manure,<br />

and the system of agriculture is gradually improving.<br />

Limestone exists near the border of the adjoining parish<br />

of Killanully, but lies too deep for profitable working,<br />

especially as an abundant supply is obtained from that<br />

parish. The seats are Ballea Castle, the residence of<br />

F. Hodder, Esq,; and Rathfeen House, of T. Dor-<br />

man, Esq. The living is a rectory and vicarage, in the<br />

diocese of Cork; the rectory constitutes the corps of<br />

the prebend of Liscleary in the cathedral of Cork, and<br />

the vicarage is held in sequestration by the Ecclesiasti-<br />

cal Commissioners. Of the tithes, amounting to £210,<br />

five-ninths are payable to the prebendary and the<br />

remainder to the Commissioners. Divine service is<br />

regularly performed in the parochial school-house. In<br />

the R. C. divisions the parish forms part of the union<br />

or district of Ballygarvan and Douglas. The parochial<br />

school is partly supported by the prebendary, and partly<br />

by the Cork diocesan association; and about 70 child-<br />

ren are educated in a private school.<br />

LISCOLEMAN, a parish, in the half-barony of<br />

SHILLELAGH, county of WICKLOW, and province of<br />

LEINSTER, 3 miles (E. N. E.) from Tullow, on the con-<br />

fines of the county of Carlow; containing 754 inhabit-<br />

ants. It comprises 2417 statute acres, as applotted<br />

under the tithe act, including a small portion of bog:<br />

the state of agriculture is improving. The seats are<br />

Rath, the residence of J. Whelan, Esq., and Knoeklow,<br />

of Mrs. Brown. It is an impropriate cure, in the diocese<br />

of Leighlin, forming part of the union of Aghold; the<br />

rectory is appropriate to the dean and chapter. Of the<br />

tithes, amounting to £150, two-thirds are payable to the<br />

dean and chapter, and the remainder to the incumbent.<br />

In the R. C. divisions it forms part of the union or<br />

district of Clonmore.<br />

LISDEEN, a village, in the parish of KILFIERAGH,<br />

barony of MOYARTA, county of CLARE, and province of<br />

MUNSTER, 2 miles (E.) from Kilkee, near the road from<br />

that place to Kilrush; containing 7 houses and 45 in-<br />

habitants. The population has considerably decreased<br />

since the increase of buildings at Kilkee. Fairs are held<br />

on May 7th, July 13th, Sept. 8th, and Dec. 17th. Here<br />

is the old R. C. chapel for the parish of Kilfieragh; and<br />

in the vicinity is a chalybeate spring, occasionally used<br />

for medicinal purposes.<br />

LISDOONVARNA, county of CLARE.—See KIL-<br />

MOON.<br />

LISDOWNEY, a village, in the parish of AHARNEY,<br />

barony of GALMOY, county of KILKENNY, and province<br />

of LEINSTER, 3 miles (S.) from Durrow, on the road to<br />

Kilkenny; containing 28 houses and 162 inhabitants.<br />

It is situated on the confines of Queen’s county, and<br />

contains the chapel giving name to the R. C. union or<br />

district, which latter comprises the parishes of Aharney,<br />

Sheffin, Bailee, and Coolcashin, and parts of Rath-<br />

beagh and Grange.<br />

LISGENAN, or GRANGE, a parish, in the barony<br />

of DECIES-within-DRUM, county of WATERFORD, and<br />

province of MUNSTER, 5 miles (E.) from Youghal, on<br />

the river Licky, and near the coast; containing 2195<br />

inhabitants. It comprises 5689 statute acres, as ap-<br />

plotted under the tithe act: sea-weed, which is obtained<br />

in great abundance at the Cove, is used for manure. In<br />

the cliffs here are some remarkable caves, and off the<br />

shore is Goats’ Island. At Whiting bay is Grange Lodge,<br />

the occasional residence of Sir Rich. Musgrave, Bart,<br />

during the bathing season. It is a vicarage, in the<br />

diocese of Lismore, forming part of the union of Kin-<br />

salebeg; the rectory is impropriate in the Duke of De-<br />

vonshire. Of the tithes, amounting to £600, two-thirds<br />

are payable to the impropriator, and the remainder to the<br />

vicar. In the R. C. divisions it forms part of the union<br />

or district of Ardmore, and has a small chapel. About<br />

£20 children are educated in three private schools.<br />

LISGOOLD, a parish, in the barony of BARRYMORE,<br />

county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER, 6¾ miles<br />

(S. S. E.) from Rathcormac, on the road from Midleton<br />

to Fermoy; containing 893 inhabitants. It comprises<br />

6981 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act, and<br />

valued at £4688.15. per annum: the soil is poor, and the<br />

state of agriculture is rather backward. The beautiful<br />

glen of Bally-Edmond contains some fine plantations,<br />
