The glebe-house was built in 1814, by a gift of £100<br />

and a loan, of £675, from the late Board of First Fruits;<br />

the glebe comprises 21 acres, valued at £42, and there<br />

is also a glebe of five acres in Colmolyn, valued at<br />

£10. 10. per annum. The church was built in 1811,<br />

by a loan of £900 from the same Board. In the R. C.<br />

divisions it forms part of the union or district of Dun-<br />

shaughlin. Here are two schools, in which about 50<br />

children are educated.<br />

KNOCKMOURNE, or KNOCKMORE, a parish,<br />

partly in the barony of BARRYMORE, partly in that of<br />

CONDONS and CLONGIBBONS, but chiefly in that of<br />

KINNATALOON, county of CORK, and province of MUN-<br />

STER, 6 miles (N. W.) from Tallow, on the road to Rath-<br />

cormac; containing 3144 inhabitants. It comprises<br />

7514 statute acres, of which 75 are woodland, 250 bog,<br />

and the remainder arable land: the soil is good, and<br />

there is much limestone and some brown stone. It is<br />

a vicarage, in the diocese of Cloyne, united at an un-<br />

known period, by act of council, to the vicarage of Bally-<br />

noe, and in the patronage of the Bishop; the rectory<br />

is impropriate in the corporation of Waterford. The<br />

tithes amount to £1070. 12. 9., which is equally divided<br />

between the impropriators and the vicar, and the tithes<br />

of the benefice to £840. 7. 4½. The glebe comprises<br />

three acres. The church was rebuilt by a loan of £300<br />

from the late Board of First Fruits, in 1813. In the<br />

R. C. divisions it is the head of a union or district,<br />

which includes the parishes of Knockmoume, Ballynoe,<br />

and Mogealy; and has chapels at Conna, Ballynoe, and<br />

Lisnabrint. Here is a private school, in which about<br />

70 children are educated.<br />

KNOCKMOY.—See ABBEYKNOCKMOY.<br />

KNOCKNEGAUL, a parish, partly in the barony<br />

of PUBBLEBRIEN, county of LIMERICK, and partly in<br />

the county of the city of LIMERICK, province of MUN-<br />

STER, 4 miles (S.) from Limerick, on the road to Feda-<br />

more; containing 1381 inhabitants. This parish com-<br />

prises 2097 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe<br />

act; the land is in general good, and the system of<br />

agriculture improving; the fences are, however, but<br />

very indifferent, consisting of low walls of loose stones,<br />

except in the neighbourhood of Leamonfield, where the<br />

country is exceedingly interesting. The principal seats<br />

are Leamonfield, that of H. Bevan, Esq.; and Bally-<br />

clough, of E. Moroney, Esq., both pleasantly situated<br />

and commanding some finely varied scenery. The living<br />

is a rectory and vicarage, in the diocese of Limerick; the<br />

rectory forms part of the union of Nantinan and the<br />

corps of the precentorship, and the vicarage, part of the<br />

union and corps of the prebend of Kilpeacon in the ca-<br />

thedral of Limerick. The tithes amount to £230. 15.4½.,<br />

of which £154. 16. 10 is payable to the precentor, and<br />

the remainder to the vicar. The glebe-house is a hand-<br />

some residence, and the glebe comprises 11 acres. In<br />

the R. C. divisions the parish is part of the union or<br />

district of Loughmore. The ruins of the ancient church,<br />

which was destroyed during the war of 1641, are close<br />

to the glebe-house.<br />

KNOCKRATH, a constablewick, or sub-denomina-<br />

tion of the parish of RATHDRUM, barony of BALLINA-<br />

COR, county of WICKLOW, and province of LEINSTER,<br />

3½ miles (N. W.) from Rathdrum, on the road to Glen-<br />

dalough; containing 2081 inhabitants. It is in the<br />

beautiful vale of Clara, and comprises 1856 statute<br />

acres, as applottea under the tithe act; and forms part<br />

of the rectory and vicarage of Rathdrum, in the diocese<br />

of Dublin and Glendalough; the tithes amount to<br />

£134. 14. 2½. In the R. C. divisions also it is in the<br />

union or district of Rathdrum, and has a chapel in the<br />

village of Clara, in which also is a public school. Here<br />

are some remains of an old castle and a rath.<br />

KNOCKTEMPLE, a parish, in the barony of Du-<br />

HALLOW, county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER,<br />

10 miles (S. W.) from Charleville, on the new road from<br />

Newcastle to Mallow; containing 1801 inhabitants. It<br />

is situated on the river Allua, near the northern confines<br />

of the county, and comprises 7737 statute acres, as<br />

applotted under the tithe act, and valued at £4125 per<br />

annum. Part of the extensive bog called the Red Bog<br />

is within its limits; and a vein of culm has been lately<br />

discovered, but not yet worked. The seats are Castle<br />

Ishen, the family mansion of Sir James Fitzgerald,<br />

Bart., and Glenfield, an old mansion belonging to<br />

the Boyle family. The living is a rectory, in the dio-<br />

cese of Cloyne, united by act of council to the impro-<br />

priate cure of Kilbolane, constituting the union of<br />

Knocktemple, in the patronage of the Bishop: the tithes<br />

amount to £250, and the income of the benefice,<br />

including the stipend of the impropriate curacy, to<br />

£256. 3. 1. There is a glebe of 3 acres in this parish.<br />

The church of the union is in Kilbolane. In the<br />

R. C. divisions it forms part of the union or district<br />

of Freemount, which also comprises the parish of Kil-<br />

bolane and the greater part of Shandrum, and contains<br />

the chapels of Freemount, Millford, and Kilbolane. At<br />

Freemount in this parish, is a national school, in which<br />

about 60 children are educated; and a similar number<br />

are taught in a private school. Adjoining the mansion<br />

at Castle Ishen are the ruins of the ancient structure,<br />

from which it derives its name.<br />

KNOCKTOPHER, a town and parish (formerly a<br />

parliamentary borough), in the barony of KNOCKTO-<br />

PHER, county of KILKENNY, and province of LEINSTER,<br />

10 miles (S.) from Kilkenny, on the road to Waterford;<br />

containing 1518 inhabitants, of which number, 475 are<br />

in the town. This place was the principal residence of<br />

the Butlers, Earls of Ormonde, of whom James, the<br />

second Earl, in 1356, founded a monastery for Carmelite<br />

friars, of which the first prior, Henry Brown, received<br />

two parts of the temporalities of the see of Ossory,<br />

then in the King’s hands; and the last prior, William,<br />

was made bishop of that diocese by Edw. VI. The site<br />

and revenues of the establishment, at the dissolution,<br />

were granted by Hen. VIII. to Patrick Barnwell; and a<br />

regrant of the abbey and lands was made subsequently<br />

by Jas. I. to Sir Nicholas White, Knt., from whose<br />

representatives the ancestor of the present proprietor,<br />

the Rev. Sir Hercules Richard Langrishe, purchased<br />

them. In 1365, the same Earl obtained from Edw.<br />

III. the grant of a weekly market and several fairs;<br />

and the town appears to have enjoyed the privileges<br />

of a free borough by a kind of prescriptive right, which<br />

was acknowledged in a charter of Jas. II. that never<br />

came into operation. The castle was taken in 1649 by<br />

the parliamentarian forces commanded by Cromwell in<br />

person, and by his orders was immediately demolished.<br />

The inhabitants first sent members to the Irish parlia-<br />

ment in 1661, and continued to do so till the Union,<br />

when the borough was disfranchised. The inhabitants
