on the new, line of road to Cork. There are several<br />

raths or forts in the parish.<br />

BALLYHUSKARD, a parish, in the barony of<br />

BALLAGHKEEN, county of WEXFORD, and province of<br />

LEINSTER, 3 miles (S. E. by E.) from Enniscorthy; con-<br />

taining 2487 inhabitants. It is situated on the road<br />

from Enniscorthy to Oulart, and contains Oulartleigh,<br />

the seat of Arthur Murphy, Esq.; and Ballycoursey,<br />

of Anthony Hawkins, Esq. The living consists of a<br />

rectory and perpetual curacy, in the diocese of Ferns;<br />

the former constitutes part of the union of St. Mary’s,<br />

Enniscorthy, and the latter is in the patronage of the<br />

Rector; the tithes amount to £547. 13. 5.; the curate’s<br />

stipend is £75 per annum. The church is a neat edifice<br />

with a tower, built in 1829. There is a glebe of 20 acres,<br />

but no glebe-house. In the R. C. divisions the parish<br />

is partly in the union or district of Edermine, and partly<br />

in that of Oulart: the former portion contains the<br />

chapel of Glanbryan; and the latter, that of Ballincurry.<br />

There is a place of worship for the Society of Friends.<br />

A parochial school is about to be established; and there<br />

are five hedge schools, in which are about 160 children,<br />

and a Sunday school. A specimen of the gigantic<br />

horned fossil deer of Ireland (cervus megaceros) was dis-<br />

covered near the bog of Itty, in this parish, in 1835;<br />

prior to which, portions of several others of the same<br />

species had been dug up near the same spot. This<br />

skeleton is in the possession of Dr. Macartney, of Ennis-<br />

corthy, at whose expense it was dug out, and by whom<br />

it has been set up in an out-house adjoining his resi-<br />

dence: its dimensions exceed those of the skeleton in<br />

the museum of Trinity College, Dublin.<br />

BALLYINGLEY, a parish, in the barony of SHEL<br />

MALIER, county of WEXFORD, and province of LEIN-<br />

STER, 5 miles (S. W. by S.) from Taghmon; containing<br />

204 inhabitants. This parish is situated on the east<br />

bank of the Scar river, and contains 746 statute acres,<br />

as applotted under the tithe act. By a return to a regal<br />

visitation, in 1615, it appears to have been one of the<br />

mensals of the bishop of Ferns, which it still continues<br />

to be. It is one of the six parishes that constitute the<br />

union of Horetown, in the diocese of Ferns: the tithes<br />

amount to £31.16.ll¼., of which £21. 4. 7½. is paid to<br />

the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, and £10. 12. 3¾. to<br />

the incumbent. The church is in ruins. The parish is<br />

within the R. C. district of Ballymitty.<br />

BALLYJAMESDUFF, a market and post-town, and<br />

a district parish, in the barony of CASTLERAHAN, county<br />

of CAVAN, and province of ULSTER, 8½ miles (S. E.) from<br />

Cavan, and 44¾ miles (N. W. by W.) from Dublin; con-<br />

taining 3227 inhabitants, of which number, 863 are in<br />

the town. The town is situated on the old mail coach<br />

road from Virginia to Cavan, and consists of five streets,<br />

containing together 150 houses. The market is on<br />

Tuesday, and is amply supplied; and fairs are held on<br />

Feb. 4th, March 8th, April 16th, May 7th, June 10th,<br />

July 17th, Aug. 15th, Sept. 2nd, Oct. 26th, Nov. 29th,<br />

and Dec. 23rd. Here is a constabulary police station,<br />

and petty sessions are held. The parish was created in<br />

1831, by disuniting nine townlands from the parish of<br />

Castleraghan, five from that of Denn, two from Lurgan,<br />

and four from the parish of Kildruraferton. The living<br />

is a perpetual curacy, in the diocese of Kilmore, and in<br />

the patronage of the several Incumbents of the above<br />

parishes, who present in rotation: the stipend of the<br />

perpetual curate is £80 per annum, towards which £30<br />

is contributed by the incumbent of Castleraghan, £20<br />

by the incumbent of Kildrumferton, and £15 each by<br />

the incumbents of Denn and Lurgan. The church is a<br />

plain edifice, erected in 1834 by aid of a grant of £900<br />

from the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, and subscriptions<br />

amounting to £200. In the R. C. divisions the parish<br />

forms part of the union or district of Castleraghan and<br />

Munterconnaught; the chapel is a spacious building.<br />

There is a place of worship for Presbyterians in con-<br />

nection with the Synod of Ulster, and of the third class;<br />

also two for Wesleyan Methodists. A school at Remo-<br />

nan is supported by Lord Farnham, and another at<br />

Ballyjamesduff is aided by private subscriptions: about<br />

140 boys and 150 girls are instructed in these schools;<br />

and there are three pay schools, situated respectively at<br />

Rawson, Lackenmore, and Lackenduff, in which are<br />

about 180 boys and 90 girls.<br />

BALLYKEANE, or KILLEIGHY, a parish, partly<br />

in the barony of GEASHILL, but chiefly in that of UPPER<br />

PHILIPSTOWN, KING’S county, and province of LEIN-<br />

STER, 3½ miles (N. N. W.) from Portarlington; contain-<br />

ing 2415 inhabitants. It is situated on the road from<br />

Portarlington to Tullamore, and comprises 8069 statute<br />

acres, as applotted under the tithe act. The living is a<br />

rectory and vicarage, in the diocese of Kildare; the<br />

former is united to that of Killaderry, and the latter is<br />

a distinct benefice, in the patronage of the Bishop: the<br />

tithes amount to £304.12. 3¾., of which £203. 1. 6½.<br />

is payable to the rector, and the remainder to the vicar.<br />

The church is a handsome building, erected in 1827, by<br />

aid of a grant of £900 from the late Board of First<br />

Fruits. The glebe-house was built by aid of a gift of<br />

£450 and a loan of £120 from the same Board: the glebe<br />

comprises 7½ acres. In the R. C. divisions the parish<br />

is united with part of that of Geashill, in which union<br />

are three chapels, one at Ballykeane, and the others at<br />

Killeigh and Ballynegar in Geashill. A school, in which<br />

17 boys and 16 girls are taught, is aided by subscrip-<br />

tions; and there are three private schools, in which are 90<br />

boys and 55 girls, and four Sunday schools.<br />

BALLYKELLY, a village, in the parish of TAM-<br />

LAGHT-FINLAGAN, barony of KENAUGHT, county of<br />

LONDONDERRY, and province of ULSTER, 3 miles (W.<br />

by S.) from Newtownlimavady; containing 290 inha-<br />

bitants. This place, with the lands around it, was<br />

granted by Jas. I., on the plantation of Ulster, to the<br />

Fishmongers’ Company of London, who, in 1619, erected<br />

a large and handsome castle, the custody of which was<br />

entrusted to James Higgins, Esq., who had a garrison<br />

of 40 able men, with arms for its defence. The estate<br />

was held under lease from the company, by the Hamil-<br />

tons and Beresfords, from the year 1628 till the death<br />

of Geo. III., when it reverted to the company, who im-<br />

mediately commenced improvements on an extensive<br />

scale. The village is situated on the road from London-<br />

derry to Coleraine, and contains 67 houses, of which<br />

the greater number are handsomely built. The pro-<br />

prietors have built in it several very neat cottages; a<br />

large and handsome meeting-house, in the Grecian style<br />

of architecture, for Presbyterians in connection with the<br />

Synod of Ulster; an excellent dispensary, with a very<br />

good house for a resident surgeon; and large and sub-<br />

stantial school-rooms, with residences for the master<br />
