In the R. C. divisions this parish forms part of the union<br />

or district of Ovens: the chapel is a large old plain<br />

building. Besides the parochial school for boys and<br />

girls, a school in which are about 60 boys is partly sup-<br />

ported by an annual donation of £8. 8. from Mr. Rye:<br />

there are also two other pay schools.<br />

AGLISH, a parish, in the barony of MAGONIHY,<br />

county of KERRY, and province of MUNSTER, 4 miles<br />

(S. E.) from Milltown, on the north-east side of the river<br />

Laune, and on the road from Killarney to Milltown;<br />

containing 1901 inhabitants. It comprises 4924 statute<br />

acres, as applotted under the tithe act: the greater part<br />

of the land is of the best quality and chiefly under<br />

tillage, and the system of agriculture has been greatly<br />

improved within the last few years; there are about 100<br />

acres of bog. At Barleymount is a quarry of excellent<br />

building stone, from which the stone was taken for Lord<br />

Headley’s mansion at Aghadoe. The living is a vicarage,<br />

in the diocese of Ardfert and Aghadoe, and in the<br />

patronage of the Earl of Cork, in whom the rectory is<br />

impropriate: the tithes amount to £156. 18. 4 ½ one-<br />

half of which is payable to the impropriator, and the<br />

other to the vicar. The church is a neat structure, with<br />

an octagon tower on a square base, and for its erection<br />

the late Board of First Fruits gave £600, in 1822. The<br />

glebe-house was built about the same time, the Board<br />

having granted a gift of £337 and a loan of £142: the<br />

glebe comprises 14a. 3r. 1p. In the R. C. divisions<br />

the parish is included in the union or district of Fieries;<br />

the old chapel is disused, and a chapel was built within<br />

the last fourteen years at Ballyhar, on the border of this<br />

parish, but within the limits of the parish of Kileredane,<br />

A school, in which are 50 boys and 6 girls, is supported<br />

by Lord Kenmare; and there is a pay school, in which<br />

are about 30 boys and 20 girls. Immediately adjoining<br />

the church are the remains of the ancient structure,<br />

completely mantled with ivy, and forming an interesting<br />

appendage.<br />

AGLISH, or AGLISHMARTIN, a parish, in the<br />

barony of IVERIC, county of KILKENNY, and province of<br />

LEINSTER, 3 miles (W.) from Waterford, on the river<br />

Suir, and on the road from Waterford to Carrick-on-<br />

Suir; containing 401 inhabitants, of which number, 142<br />

are in the village. It comprises 2414 statute acres, and<br />

is a rectory, in the diocese of Ossory, and in the patron-<br />

age of the Crown: the tithes amount to £96. 18. 5½.<br />

There is neither church nor glebe-house; the glebe con-<br />

sists of 2½ acres. In the R. C. divisions it is part of the<br />

union or district of Moncoin.<br />

AGLISH, county of MAYO.—See CASTLEBAR.<br />

AGLISH, a parish, in the barony of DECIES-within-<br />

DRUM, county of WATERFORD, and province of MUN-<br />

STER, 8 miles (W.) from Dungarvan; containing 3689<br />

inhabitants, of which number, 302 are in the village.<br />

This parish is situated on the river Blackwater, by which<br />

it is bounded on the west, and comprises about 7800<br />

statute acres of arable, pasture, and meadow land, 810 of<br />

woodland, 1393 of waste, and 1296 of bog and marsh,<br />

the greater portion of which affords good pasturage for<br />

cattle: of its entire extent, 6706 acres are applotted<br />

under the tithe act. Part of it is mountainous, but<br />

towards the river the soil is generally fertile. It is<br />

in the diocese of Lismore, and is a vicarage, forming part<br />

of the union of Affane; the rectory is impropriate in the<br />

Duke of Devonshire. The tithes amount to £480, of<br />

which £320 is payable to the impropriator, and the re-<br />

mainder to the vicar. There is a chapel at Villierstown<br />

independent of the vicarage, founded and endowed by<br />

John, Earl of Grandison; the living is a donative, in the<br />

patronage of H. V. Stuart, Esq. In the R. C. divisions<br />

the parish is the head of a union or district, which com-<br />

prises also the parish of Whitechurch and part of the<br />

parish of Ardmore, and contains three chapels, situated<br />

respectively at Aglish, Ballynamileach, and Slievegrine<br />

also a friary chapel. There are two schools, supported<br />

by H. V. Stuart, Esq., in which 183 children are in-<br />

structed; and five pay schools, in which are about 220<br />

boys and 85 girls.<br />

AGLISHCLOGHANE, or EGLISH, a parish, in<br />

the barony of LOWER ORMOND, county of TIPPERARY,<br />

and province of MUNSTER. 3 miles (N. E.) from Bur-<br />

ris-o-kane, on the road from Roscrea to Portumna; con-<br />

taining 1961 inhabitants. It comprises 4474 statute<br />

acres, as applotted under the tithe act. The system of<br />

agriculture is improving, and a considerable portion of<br />

moor land, formerly waste, has been reclaimed and<br />

brought into cultivation: there is an abundance of bog.<br />

Limestone of superior quality abounds, and is quarried<br />

for building. Milford, pleasantly situated in a well-plant-<br />

ed demesne, is the occasional residence of Ralph Smith,<br />

Esq. The living consists of a rectory, vicarage, and<br />

perpetual curacy, in the diocese of Killaloe; the vicar-<br />

age, with cure of souls, forms the corps of the archdea-<br />

conry of Killaloe, with which are held, without cure, the<br />

rectories of Aglishcloghane, Lorrha, and Dorrha, epis-<br />

copally united in 1785, and by act of council in 1802,<br />

and in the patronage of the Bishop; the perpetual<br />

curacy is in the patronage of the Archdeacon. The<br />

tithes amount to £161. 10. 9¼., and of the entire union,<br />

to £1013. 7. 8¾. The church of the union is at Lorrha,<br />

where is also the glebe-house of the archdeaconry; and<br />

there are two glebes, comprising together about 43 acres,<br />

situated respectively near the sites of the old churches.<br />

The church of the perpetual curacy, a neat modern<br />

building, for the erection of which the late Board of<br />

First Fruits gave £800, in 1813, is situated near the<br />

ruins of the old church, in the churchyard of which is<br />

a very old ash tree of large dimensions. The glebe-<br />

house was built by aid of a gift of £450 and a loan of<br />

£50 from the same Board, in 1816; the glebe com-<br />

prises 13½ acres; and the stipend of the perpetual curate<br />

is £100 per ann., paid by the archdeacon. This is<br />

one of the three parishes which constitute the R. C.<br />

union or district of Burris o-kane: the chapel is situated<br />

in the village of Eglish. The parochial school is sup-<br />

ported under the patronage of the perpetual curate;<br />

and there is also a school in the R. C. chapel.<br />

AGLISHCORMICK, or LISCORMUCK, a parish,<br />

partly in the barony of COONAGH, but principally in<br />

that of CLANWILLTAM, county of LIMERICK, and pro-<br />

vince of MUNSTJER, 2½ miles (W. S. W.) from Pallas-<br />

Greine, on the road to Bruff; containing 316 inhabit-<br />

ants. It comprises 1020¼ statute acres, as applotted<br />

under the tithe act: the land is in general of good<br />

quality. The living is a rectory and vicarage, in the<br />

diocese of Emly, and forms part of the corps of the<br />

precentorship in the cathedral church of St. Alibeus,<br />

Emly, in the patronage of the Archbishop of Cashel.<br />

The tithes amount to £138. 9. 2¾. there is neither<br />

church, glebe-house, nor glebe. In the R. C. divisions
