Henry Draycot, who had previously obtained a lease<br />

for 21 years. Near the town is a spring, arched over<br />

with ancient massive masonry, called the Lady Well,<br />

and much resorted to on the patron day, Sept. 29th.<br />

On the plains of Ballynahatna are the remains of a<br />

Druidical temple partly enclosed by a curving rampart,<br />

on the outside of which is part of a circle of upright<br />

stones; and on a rising ground near this place is a<br />

circular fort surrounded by a double fosse and rampart,<br />

supposed to have been thrown up by the earliest inha-<br />

bitants of the country. Dundalk formerly gave the<br />

title of Baron to the family of Georges.<br />

DUNDERMOT, a grange, in the barony of KILCON-<br />

WAY, county of ANTRIM, and province of ULSTER,<br />

on the Ravel water; containing 1069 inhabitants. It<br />

comprises, according to the Ordnance survey, 3003¾<br />

statute acres: the tithes, which are impropriate, amount<br />

to £65, There is a meeting-house for Presbyterians<br />

of the Seceding Synod in connection with that at<br />

Ahoghill. Near the Ballymena road is a Danish fort<br />

or mound of an oval form, 60 feet by 30, the summit<br />

of which is level, and the base surrounded by a deep<br />

fosse and counterscarp: towards the bridge over the<br />

Ravel two parallel branches from the fosse enclose<br />

another area of a quadrangular form, now called “the<br />

parade.”<br />

DUNDERROW, a parish, partly in the county of<br />

the city of CORK, partly in the barony of KINSALE,<br />

partly in that of KINNALEA, but chiefly in the barony<br />

of EAST MUSKERRY, county of CORK, and province of<br />

MUNSTER, 4 miles (W. by N.) from Kinsale, on the<br />

road to Bandon; containing 2498 inhabitants. This<br />

parish comprises 637l¼ statute acres, as applotted under<br />

the tithe act, and valued at £4167 per annum; about<br />

800 acres are bog and mountain, and 971¼ waste; the<br />

remainder is good land, the greater portion being arable.<br />

It consists of several detached portions, and has con-<br />

sequently a great variety of surface and.soil; Dunder-<br />

row proper is generally composed of a light soil, which<br />

is very well cultivated, and produces abundant crops.<br />

A new line of road is in progress through the parish,<br />

leading from Kinsale to Bandon. In the Bandon river,<br />

which bounds it on the south, are several salmon weirs.<br />

The principal residences are Leoffney House, that of<br />

E. Gillman, Esq.; Killaney, of T. Markham, Esq.;<br />

Ballyvrin, of W. Dorman, Esq.; Dunderrow Cottage,<br />

of the Rev. R. Halburd; Ballinphilleck, of W. Bar-<br />

ter, Esq.; Corron, of J. Horneybrooky, Esq.; Gort-<br />

naclough, of W. Beasley, Esq.; Hop Island, of G. Ed-<br />

wards, Esq.; and the glebe-house, of the Rev.M, O’Do-<br />

novan: besides several good houses belonging to res-<br />

pectable farmers, The living is a rectory, in the diocese<br />

of Cork, and in the patronage of T. C. Kearney, Esq.,<br />

of Garretstown: the tithes amount to £525, of which<br />

£150 is payable to the dean and chapter of St. Finbarr’s,<br />

Cork, and the remainder to the rector, The glebe-<br />

house was built by aid of a gift of £250 and a loan of<br />

£550, from the late Board of First Fruits, in 182l:<br />

the glebe comprises 24a. 3r. 27p. The church, a small<br />

handsome edifice, with a lofty square tower, was erected<br />

by aid of a loan of £500, in 1812, from the same Board.<br />

In the churchyard is a handsome pyramidal monument<br />

of marble, erected over the remains of an English lady,<br />

who died at Kinsale while on a tour through Ireland,<br />

district of Kinsale, but the detached portions belong to<br />

the several parishes by which they are surrounded: the<br />

chapel is at Ballynamona. The parochial school, situ-<br />

ated at Leoffney, is jointly supported by Capt. Her-<br />

ri ck and the rector; and there is a daily pay school at<br />

Ballynamona. About 100 boys and 40 girls are edu-<br />

cated, in a private school; and a Sunday school is chiefly<br />

maintained by the Rev. Robert Halburd. The doon,<br />

from which the parish derives its name, has been partly<br />

removed: the queen’s forces secured themselves upon it<br />

in 1601, prior to the siege of Kinsale, when the Spanish<br />

forces were in possession,<br />

DUNDONALD, a parish, in the barony of LOWER<br />

CASTLEREAGH, county of DOWN, and province of ULS-<br />

TER, 4 miles (E.) from Belfast, on the mail coach road<br />

to Newtown-Ardea; containing 1669 inhabitants. This<br />

parish, which is called also Kirkdonald, comprises, ac-<br />

cording to the Ordnance survey, 4635 statute acres of<br />

fertile land, principally under tillage and in a high state<br />

of cultivation. Every improvement in the mode of<br />

tillage and the construction of farming implements has<br />

been eagerly adopted; there is neither bog nor waste<br />

land in the parish. The principal scats are Storemont,<br />

that of S. Cleveland, Esq.; Summerfield, of R Gordon,<br />

Esq.; Rose Park, of Major Digby; Bessmount, of<br />

T. S, Corry, Esq.; and Donleady, of A. McDonnel, Esq.<br />

Near the village is an extensive bleach-green, where<br />

5000 pieces of linen are annually finished. The liv-<br />

ing is a rectory, in the diocese of Down, and in the<br />

patronage of S. Cleveland, Esq.; the tithes amount<br />

to £205. The glebe-house, a handsome residence,<br />

was built in 1820 by a gift of £300 and a loan of<br />

£500 from the late Board of First Fruits; the glebe<br />

comprises 15½ acres. The church, a small edifice, was<br />

rebuilt on the site of a former church in 1771, and a<br />

tower was added to it in 1774. In the R. C divisions<br />

the parish forms part of the union of Newtown-Ardes.<br />

There is a place of worship for Presbyterians in connec-<br />

tion with the Synod of Ulster, of the second class, to<br />

the poor of which congregation Mr. John Crane, of<br />

London, bequeathed the interest of a sum of money,<br />

About 50 children are taught in the parochial school,<br />

which is aided by the rector; and there is a private<br />

school, in which are about 45 children. A large and<br />

handsome school-house has been built and endowed at<br />

Church Quarter, by David Gordon, Esq., the principal<br />

proprietor of the parish. In the demesne of Summer-<br />

field is a chalybeate spring; and close to the church<br />

is a large circular fort surrounded by a moat, from<br />

which the parish is supposed, to derive its name. A<br />

little below, in the same ground, is a cave continued to<br />

the fort and passing under its base. Near the bleach-<br />

green is a conical hill, or rath, contiguous to which, at<br />

the month of a small rivulet, is a stone pillar 10 feet<br />

high. Gilbert Kennedy, a distinguished Presbyterian<br />

divine, was interred in the church in 1687.<br />

DUNDONNELL, a parish, in the barony of LOWER<br />

CONNELLO, county of LIMERICK, and province of MUN-<br />

STER, 1 mile (W.) from Rathkeale, on the river Deel;<br />

containing 476 inhabitants, It comprises 1239 statute<br />

acres, chiefly in tillage. The land m in general good,<br />

being based on a substratum of limestone: the system<br />

of agriculture has of late been much improved. Rid-<br />

dlestown, the ancient mansion of Gerald Blennerhasset,<br />

Esq., is seated on the banks of the Deel; and in its
