coarse and rocky, and the only seat is Normangrove, the<br />

residence of John Burke, Esq. It is a vicarage, in the<br />

diocese of Kilmacduagh, forming part of the union of<br />

Kilcolgan; the rectory is appropriate to the see, the<br />

deanery, and the vicarage of Ardrahan. The tithes<br />

amount to £98. 0. 6., of which £21 is payable to the<br />

Ecclesiastical Commissioners, £7. 7. to the dean, £42<br />

to the incumbent of Ardrahan, and £27. 13. 6. to the<br />

vicar. There are some remains of the old church, with<br />

a small burial-ground attached. About a mile from<br />

Kinvarra is a hole in the rock, called the Pigeon Hole,<br />

which leads to a natural cavern, three or four hundred<br />

feet in extent. Here are the remains of the castle of<br />

Cahir Irlane, which is said to have belonged to the Killi-<br />

kellys.<br />

KILLEEVAN, a parish, partly in the barony of<br />

MONAGHAN, but chiefly in that of DARTRY, county of<br />

MONAGHAN, and province of ULSTER, on the river Fin,<br />

and on the road from Clones to Dublin; containing, with<br />

the post-town of Newbliss, 7273 inhabitants, of which<br />

number 87 are in the village. This parish comprises,<br />

according to the Ordnance survey, 11,571 3 /4 statute acres,<br />

of which 11,314 3 /4 are in Dartry, including a detached<br />

portion of 127 1 /2 acres, and 55 3 /4 under water; and 257<br />

in the barony of Monaghan: of the whole, 9329 are<br />

applotted under the tithe act. The land is principally<br />

under tillage, the soil fertile, and the system of agricul-<br />

ture improved: there are several detached portions of<br />

bog. The principal seats are Ballinure, the residence of<br />

W. Forster, Esq.; Newbliss House, of A. Kerr, Esq.;<br />

Gortgranagh, of Mrs. Graham; Scarvey, of Major<br />

Campbell Graham; and Glinch Lodge, of J. Thompson,<br />

Esq. The living is a rectory and vicarage, in the<br />

diocese of Clogher, and in the patronage of the Bishop:<br />

the tithes amount to £518. 19. 2 3 /4. The church is a<br />

neat plain structure, for the repair of which the Eccle-<br />

siastical Commissioners have recently granted £142.<br />

The glebe house is a neat building, and the glebe com-<br />

prises 64 acres. In the R. C. divisions the parish is<br />

the head of a union, comprising also the parish of<br />

Aughabog, and containing two chapels; the chapel of<br />

this parish, on the townland of Killafuddy, is a neat<br />

edifice, erected in 1817. About 680 children are taught<br />

in six public schools, of which the parochial school is<br />

chiefly supported by the incumbent; and there are four<br />

private schools, in which are about 260 children.—See<br />

KILLEGLAND, or KILLEYLAN, also called KIL-<br />

MEGLAN, a parish, in the barony of RATOATH, county<br />

of MEATH, and province of LEINSTER; containing 473<br />

inhabitants, who are all in the post-town of Ashbourne,<br />

of which the parish principally consists, It is a rectory<br />

and vicarage, in the diocese of Meath, forming part of<br />

the union of Ratoath: the tithes amount to £54. In<br />

the R. C. divisions also it is part of the union or district<br />

of Ratoath, and has a chapel at Ashbourne. About<br />

120 children are educated in two public schools, one of<br />

which is principally supported by the rector.<br />

KILLEGNEY, a parish, in the barony of BANTRY,<br />

county of WEXFORD, and province of LEINSTER, 6<br />

miles (S. W.) from Enniscorthy, on the river Boro and<br />

near the high road to New Ross; containing 1616 in-<br />

habitants, It comprises 6531 statute acres, as applot-<br />

ted under the tithe act. The lands are chiefly under<br />

tillage; the soil is generally light and poor, but the<br />

system of agriculture is greatly improved, and the drill<br />

husbandry is in general use. Castle Boro, the spacious<br />

modern mansion of Lord Carew, is built on the site of<br />

an ancient castle belonging to that family, of whom the<br />

present Lord was created a peer of Ireland in 1834.<br />

The house is beautifully situated on the bank of the<br />

picturesque river Boro, which, after winding through<br />

the richly wooded demesne, discharges itself into the<br />

Slaney about two miles below Enniscorthy; and the<br />

grounds, which are tastefully disposed, comprehend<br />

some beautiful scenery, in which the spire of the<br />

church, rising above the neighbouring groves, forms a<br />

pleasing feature. The living is a rectory, in the diocese<br />

of Ferns, episcopally united, in 1798, to the impropriate<br />

curacy of Chapple, and in the patronage of the Bishop:<br />

the tithes amount to £304. 12. 3 3 /4. The church, for<br />

the erection of which the late Board of First Fruits<br />

granted a loan of £900, in 1827, is a neat modern<br />

edifice, and an elegant spire was added to it at the<br />

expense of the present Lord Carew; the Ecclesiastical<br />

Commissioners have lately granted £106 for its repair.<br />

The glebe house is a neat residence, and the glebe com-<br />

prises 16 acres, subject to a rent of £13. 16. 10 1 /2. In the<br />

R. C. divisions this parish forms part of the union or<br />

district of Templeudigan; the chapel is at Poolpeasty.<br />

Near Castleboro is a neat school-house for girls, built by<br />

Lady Carew, who allows the mistress £15 per annum,<br />

and a neat cottage residence adjoining it rent-free;<br />

there are about 30 children in this school; about 40<br />

children are taught in a private school, and there is a<br />

Sunday school. A fever hospital and dispensary are<br />

supported by Lord Carew and by grand jury present-<br />

ments. The Rev. James Gordon, author of an abridg-<br />

ment of Irish History, the History of the Rebellion in<br />

1798, and various other works, was for many years<br />

rector of this parish.<br />

KILLEHENY, or KILLAHINNY, a parish, in the<br />

barony of IRAGHTICONNOR, county of KERRY, and<br />

province of MUNSTER, 11 miles (S. W. by W.) from<br />

Tarbert, on the south-eastern shore of the estuary of<br />

the Shannon; containing 2316 inhabitants. It com-<br />

prises 7316 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe<br />

act, about one-third of which is arable land of good<br />

quality; the remainder is coarse mountain pasture,<br />

with a great quantity of bog. Agriculture is improving;<br />

sea-weed and sea-sand are used as manures, and good<br />

limestone is abundant. Fine salmon and trout are<br />

taken in the river Cashen. There is a telegraph on<br />

Knockanore mountain. Spraymount is the residence<br />

of Capt. W. Raymond, and the other seats are those of<br />

Capt. Hewson, and C. Julian, Esq. In the grounds of<br />

the latter some skeletons in stone graves were dis-<br />

covered in 1829. It is a vicarage, in the diocese of<br />

Ardfert and Aghadoe, forming part of the union of<br />

Aghavallin; the rectory is impropriate in A. Stoughton,<br />

Esq. The tithes amount to £124. 12. 3., of which<br />

£83. 1. 4. is payable to the impropriator, and the re-<br />

mainder to the vicar. In the R. C. divisions it forms<br />

part of the union or district of Lisseltin, and has a<br />

chapel at Ballybunnian. About 50 children are edu-<br />

cated in a private school. Here are the celebrated<br />

caverns of Ballybunnian., which are described under the<br />

head of that place.<br />
