the post-town of Castle-Bellingham, 3254 inhabitants.<br />

A commandery of Knights Templars was founded here<br />

in the 12th century by Matilda de Lacy, which was<br />

granted, in the reign of Edw. II., to the Knights Hos-<br />

pitallers. In 1483, Keating, prior of Kilmainham, ap-<br />

pointed Marmaduke Lomley preceptor, but some time<br />

after threw him into prison, where he died of a broken<br />

heart. According to the Ordnance survey the parish<br />

comprises 3393½ statute acres, of which 3127 are ap-<br />

plotted under the tithe act and valued at £3732 per ann.<br />

The land is of superior quality, and is chiefly under a<br />

good system of tillage; there is neither waste nor bog.<br />

The surrounding scenery is pleasingly diversified, and<br />

the neighbourhood is embellished with several hand-<br />

some seats, among which are Milestown, the residence<br />

of J. Woolsey, Esq.; Greenmount, of T. Macan, Esq.;<br />

Maine, of B. B. Stafford, Esq.; and Kilsaran, of M.<br />

Chester, Esq. The living is a rectory, in the diocese<br />

of Armagh, united by statute of the 9th of Anne, cap.<br />

12, to the rectory of Gernonstown, and in the patronage<br />

of J. M c Clintock, Esq.: the tithes of this parish amount<br />

to £359. 1.6.; and the value of the union, including<br />

tithes and glebe, is £544. 16. 10. The glebe-house was<br />

built about 70 years since by Mrs. Spencer; the glebe<br />

comprises 19½ acres of profitable land, valued at £39<br />

per ann. The church of the union is at Castle-Belling-<br />

ham. In the R. C. divisions this is the head of a<br />

union or district, comprising the parishes of Kilsaran,<br />

Gernonstown, and Stabannon, and containing chapels<br />

at Kilsaran and Stabannon, of which the former is a<br />

large building adjoining the ruins of the ancient church.<br />

The parochial school is aided by an annual donation of<br />

£10 from the rector; adjoining the R. C. chapel is a<br />

national school; and there are also a female and an<br />

infants’ school, supported by subscriptions: about 320<br />

children are educated in these schools.<br />

KILSCANLAN, a parish, in the barony of BANTRY,<br />

county of WEXFORD, and province of LEINSTER, 5<br />

miles (S. E.) from New Ross, near the road to Wexford;<br />

containing 333 inhabitants. This parish comprises 1129<br />

statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act, which are<br />

chiefly under tillage. It is an impropriate cure, in the<br />

diocese of Ferns, forming part of the union of St. Mary’s,<br />

New Ross; the rectory is a part of the mensal of the<br />

bishop, who pays the impropriate curate 40s. late cur-<br />

rency per ann. for the discharge of the clerical duties;<br />

the tithes amount to £43. 16. 11. In the R. C. divi-<br />

sions it forms part of the union or district of Old<br />

Ross.<br />

KILSCANNEL, a parish, in the barony of LOWER<br />

CONNELLO, county of LIMERICK, and province of MUN-<br />

STER, 1½ mile (W. S. W.) from Rathkeale; containing<br />

1031 inhabitants. It comprises 3141 statute acres, as<br />

applotted under the tithe act: the soil is of superior<br />

quality, being based on a substratum of limestone;<br />

about one-half of the land is under an excellent system<br />

of tillage, producing abundant crops; and the remainder<br />

is rich meadow and grazing land, affording plentiful<br />

pasture to great numbers of milch cows. There are<br />

several large dairy farms, and great quantities of butter<br />

are sent hence to Cork and Limerick for exportation.<br />

The principal gentlemen’s seats are Elm Hill, the hand-<br />

some residence of I. Studdert, Esq.; and Kilsconnell<br />

House, of R. L. Condon, Esq.: there are also several sub-<br />

stantial and well-built farm-houses, occupied by highly<br />

respectable farmers. The living is a rectory and vica-<br />

rage, in the diocese of Limerick, forming part of the<br />

corps of the chancellorship of the cathedral of Limerick:<br />

the tithes amount to £210. The glebe comprises 12<br />

acres of profitable land in two detached portions. The<br />

church, for the repair of which the Ecclesiastical Com-<br />

missioners have recently granted £115, is a very neat<br />

edifice with a square embattled tower, and was erected<br />

in 1822, by a gift of £600 from the late Board of First<br />

Fruits. In the R. C. divisions the parish forms part of<br />

the unions of Ardagh and Rathkeale. There is a place<br />

of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. About 50 children<br />

are taught in the parochial school, for which a neat<br />

school-house with a residence for the master and mis-<br />

tress was built by subscription in 1825. Near the<br />

present church are some remains of the ancient struc-<br />

ture.<br />

KILSCORAN, a parish, in the barony of FORTH,<br />

county of WEXFORD, and province of LEINSTER, 1 mile<br />

(N.) from Broadway; containing 626 inhabitants. This<br />

parish, which is situated on the shore of Greenore bay<br />

on the eastern coast, comprises 2103 statute acres, as ap-<br />

plotted under the tithe act: the land is principally under<br />

a gradually improving system of tillage; sea-weed, which<br />

is found in abundance on the shore, is the principal<br />

manure. Building-stone of tolerable quality is found at<br />

Kishough Cross. In the bay, during moderate weather,<br />

or with westerly winds, a vessel may ride in safety<br />

on the south side in two or three fathoms of water. Hill<br />

Castle, the seat of G. M. Dance, Esq., occupies a com-<br />

manding situation and forms a conspicuous and in-<br />

teresting feature in the surrounding landscape. The<br />

living is a rectory, in the diocese of Ferns, united from<br />

time immemorial to the rectories of Tacumshane, Bally-<br />

more, Killilane, and Rosslare, the vicarage of Kilrane,<br />

and the impropriate curacy of St. Margaret’s, together<br />

forming the union of Kilscoran, also called Tacum-<br />

shane, and the corps of the chancellorship of Ferns, in<br />

the patronage of the Bishop. The tithes amount to<br />

£226.17. 10½., and of the entire benefice, to £987.10.5¾.<br />

The glebe-house is a handsome and spacious residence;<br />

the glebe comprises 15¾ acres exclusively of about 9<br />

acres in the other parishes of the union. The church, a<br />

neat structure, was built by a loan of £600 from the late<br />

Board of First Fruits, in 1818, and was recently re-<br />

paired by a grant of £157 from the Ecclesiastical Com-<br />

missioners. In the R. C. divisions the parish forms<br />

part of the union or district of Tagoat. About 60 chil-<br />

dren are taught in the parochial school, which is sup-<br />

ported by the rector, Dr. Elrington, who allows the<br />

master £20 per annum, and at whose expense the school-<br />

house, a neat rustic building, was erected.<br />

KILSEILY, a parish, in the barony of TULLA, county<br />

of CLARE, and province of MUNSTER, 9 miles (W. by<br />

S.) from Killaloe, on the road toEnnis; containing 4227<br />

inhabitants. It comprises 10,008 statute acres, as ap-<br />

plotted under the tithe act; about 7600 are good arable<br />

land under an improving system of tillage, and the re-<br />

mainder mountain pasture and bog. Good building-<br />

stone of a gritty quality is found in the parish; and at<br />

Ardskegh, Hurlston, and Lyssane are quarries of<br />

slate, the produce of which is extensively used in Limer-<br />

ick and Ennis. The principal seats are Woodfield,<br />

that of C. Walker, Esq.; Hurlston, of J. Bently,<br />

Esq.; and Violet Hill, of J. Goring, Esq. Lake Doon
