from the name of its founder, Sir Wm. Stewart, to<br />

whom Jas. I. granted 2000 acres of land, called Bally-<br />

nacoole. Prior to 1619, Sir William had built the, castle<br />

of Aghentine, and commenced the village, which was oc-<br />

cupied by British tenants. He afterwards obtained a char-<br />

ter for markets and fairs; the latter are now held on the<br />

third Monday in every month. The town is gradually<br />

improving: it consists of one principal and two smaller<br />

streets, and comprises about 140 houses, several of<br />

which are modern and well built. A constabulary police<br />

force is stationed here, and petty sessions are held on<br />

alternate Thursdays. A neat chapel of ease, with a spire,<br />

was built in 1750, at the expense of Mr. Armor. A<br />

public school is supported by Col. Montgomery, who<br />

built the school-house; and there are two other public<br />

schools. Near the town is Blessingbourn Cottage, the<br />

Heat residcnce of Col. Montgomery. The ruins of<br />

Aghantine castle, in the neighbourhood, are boldly si-<br />

tuated on. elevated ground: it was destroyed by Sir<br />

Phelim O’Nial, in 1641.<br />

FLURRY-BRIDGE.—See BALLYMASCANLAN.<br />

FOATY, or FOTA, ISLAND, partly in the parish of<br />

CARRIGTOHILL, and partly in that of CLONMELL, barony<br />

of BARRYMORE, county of Cork, and province of MUN-<br />

STER, 6 miles (N.) from Cove, in the harbour of Cork;<br />

containing 188 inhabitants. This island, which com-<br />

prises 750 statute acres, solely the demesne of the Barry<br />

family, has been connected on the north, side with Car-<br />

rigtohill by a handsome bridge and causeway, whence<br />

a fine line of road from Cork to Cove passes along its<br />

south-eastern side to Belvelly, where by another lofty<br />

bridge it enters the Great Island, close under the ruins<br />

of the old castle and martello tower. Near the termi-<br />

nation of the northern bridge is an elegant entrance<br />

lodge to Foaty, the seat of the late J. Smith Barry,<br />

Esq., and near Belvelly is another lodge of.similar<br />

design. The mansion is spacious and beautifully situ-<br />

ated in the midst of thriving plantations; and the<br />

demesne extends on every side close to the shores of<br />

the harbour, of which it commands a fine view and also<br />

of the richly varied scenery of the river Lee. Not far<br />

from the house, on the shore of a picturesque bay, is a<br />

small castle of elegant design; and on the opposite<br />

shore is the castle of Blackrock, with the interesting<br />

and beautiful scenery around. Near the south-east<br />

termination of the demesne are some very neat cottages,<br />

occupied by the numerous workmen employed on the<br />

estate; and a male and female school, with residences<br />

for the master and mistress, built and wholly supported<br />

by Mr. and Mrs. Smith Barry.<br />

FOHENAH, or FOHANA, a parish, In the barony<br />

of KILCONNELL, county of GALWAY, and province of<br />

CONNAUGHT, 1½ mile (S. by E.) from Ahascragh, on the<br />

road from Kilconnel to Ahascragh; containing 1968 in-<br />

habitants. This parish comprises 5834.statute acres,<br />

as applotted under the tithe act. There are good lime-<br />

stone quarries, and an oatmeal-mill. The bog has been<br />

reclaimed by Lord Clonbrock at a large outlay of capital,<br />

according to the suggestions of Thos. Bermingham, of<br />

Caramana, Esq. The seats are Clonbrock, the residence<br />

of Lord Clonbrock, situated on an extensive demesne,<br />

finely planted and tastefully kept; and Lowville, of W.<br />

M c Donagh, Esq. The living is a rectory and vicarage,<br />

in the diocese of Clonfert; the rectory is partly appro-<br />

priate to the see and partly to the vicarage, which forms<br />

part of the union of Kilconnell. The tithes amount to<br />

£166. 3. 0¾., of which £32. 6. 1¾. is payable to the Ec-<br />

clesiastical Commissioners and £138. 16. 11. to the<br />

incumbent. The church is in ruins and the ground used<br />

as a cemetery. In the R. C. divisions the parish is<br />

united to the half parish of Kilgerril, or Kilgirdle; the<br />

chapel is a thatched building. About 50 children are<br />

educated in a private school. The peasantry are com-<br />

fortable, and agriculture is much improved. At Ballina-<br />

banaba are the remains of a castle. The skeleton of a<br />

very large elk was dug out of a bog in 1835. The title<br />

of Clonbrock, conferred on the Dillon family, is taken<br />

from the demesne.<br />

FOLLISTOWN, or FONLISTOWN, a parish, in the<br />

barony of SKREEN, county of MEATH, and province of<br />

LEINSTER, 2½ miles (S. E.) from Navan, near the road<br />

to Duleek; containing, with the parish of Staffordstown,<br />

137 inhabitants. It is a rectory, in the diocese of Meath,<br />

entirely impropriate in F. Murphy, Esq., of Kilcarn, to<br />

whom the tithes, amounting to £36 are payable. The<br />

clerical duties are performed gratuitously by the incum-<br />

bent of Skreen.<br />

FONTSTOWN, formerly FULESTOWN, a parish,<br />

partly in the barony of UPPER PHILIPSTOWN, KING’s<br />

county, and partly in the barony of WEST OPHALY,<br />

but chiefly in that of NARRAGH and RHEBAN EAST,<br />

county of KILDARE, and province of LEINSTER, 5 miles<br />

(E.) from Athy, on the mail coach road from Dublin to<br />

Cork, by way of Cashel; containing 1043 inhabitants,<br />

and comprising 4579 statute acres, of which 810 are<br />

bog, the remainder being nearly equally divided into<br />

pasture and arable land: within its limits is a small<br />

part of the bog of Monavologh, There are quarries of<br />

good building stone of a flinty nature, which is worked<br />

for home consumption. The living in a rectory and<br />

vicarage, in the diocese of Dublin, and in the patronage<br />

of the Marquess of Drogheda: the tithes amount to<br />

£267. 13. 10$, The glebe-houne was built, by aid of a<br />

gift of £100, mid a loan of £400, in 1810, from the late<br />

Board of First Fruits, additions to which have been made<br />

at a cost of £600: the glebe comprises 16a 2r, 16p,<br />

The church is a very neat structure, with a tower and<br />

spire, in imitation of the later English style of archi-<br />

tecture, built in 1823, at an expense, of £1400, of which<br />

£l200 was a gift from the late Board. In the R. C.<br />

divisions the parish forms part of the union or district<br />

of Narraghmore, or Crookstown. A handsome school<br />

house has been erected at an expense of £376, of which<br />

£160 was a grant from the Court of Chancery, out of<br />

the estate of the Marquess of Drogheda; it is to be<br />

supported partly by a yearly allowance of £.30 from the<br />

same source, and a small grant of land, and £20 an-<br />

nually from the rector. There is it private school, in which<br />

about 10 boy and 20 girls are instructed. In digging<br />

for marl, some time since, the skull and horns of a<br />

large elk were found, which are in the psssession of<br />

Col. Bruen, of Oak Park; and about two years since<br />

a coin of the reign of Ethelred was picked up in a<br />

field here.<br />

FOOK’S MILLS, a village, partly in the parish of<br />

CLONGEEN, and partly in that of HORDTOWN, barony of<br />

SHELMALIER, county of WEXFORD, and province of
