are Belville, the residence of Whitwell Butler, Esq.;<br />

Waterview, of P. Trant, Esq.; Kilkevaragh, of the Rev.<br />

J. Mansell; and Ahadda, of the Rev. — Mahony. It is<br />

a rectory and vicarage, in the diocese of Ardfert and<br />

Aghadoe, forming part of the corps of the treasurership<br />

of Ardfert: the tithes amount to £101. 10. 9., and there<br />

is a glebe at Kerl. In the R. C. divisions it is in the<br />

union or district of Prior, and has a chapel at Port-<br />

magee and Kerl. There are three private schools in the<br />

parish. The ruins of the church, which is dedicated to<br />

St. Finian, are at the bottom of the Bay of Ballinaskel-<br />

ligs, which is so much exposed to a heavy sea that the<br />

only landing-place is in a small creek to the north.<br />

Here are some chalybeate springs.<br />

KILLENAGH, a parish, in the barony of BALLAGH-<br />

KEEN, county of WEXFORD, and province of LEINSTER,<br />

4 1 /4 miles (S. by E.) from Gorey; containing 706 inha-<br />

bitants. This parish is on the eastern coast, and almost<br />

exclusively under tillage. It is a perpetual curacy, in<br />

the diocese of Ferns, forming part of the union of Arda-<br />

mine: the rectory is impropriate in H. K. G. Morgan,<br />

Esq., who receives the whole of the tithes, amounting<br />

to £145. In the R. C. divisions it forms part of the<br />

union or district of River-chapel, or Ballygarret. A<br />

dispensary was established here in 1829. About 30<br />

children are educated in a private school.<br />

KILLENAULE, a small market and post-town, and<br />

a parish, in the barony of SLIEVARDAGH, county of<br />

TIPPERARY, and province of MUNSTER, 5 3 /4 miles (N.)<br />

from Fethard, and 84 (S. W.) from Dublin, on the road<br />

from Cashel to Callan; containing 3464 inhabitants, of<br />

which number, 1578 are in the town. The parish com-<br />

prises 6121 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe<br />

act, and furnishes limestone, flagstone, potters’ clay,<br />

iron ore, and slate fit for making pencils. Its large<br />

collieries are described in the article on the county<br />

(which see). A chief constabulary police force is sta-<br />

tioned in the town, where there is a weekly market,<br />

and a sub-post-office to Littleton; and fairs are held<br />

on the first Thursday (O. S.) in May and October, and<br />

on Jan. 1st, March 25th, June 24th, and Aug. 14th.<br />

The living is a vicarage, in the diocese of Cashel, united<br />

to the rectories and vicarages of Cooleagh, Magawry,<br />

Drangan, Isertkerin, and Barrettsgrange, and the rectory<br />

of St. Johnstown, forming the union of Killenaule, in<br />

the patronage of the Archbishop: the rectory is appro-<br />

priate to the Chancellorship of the cathedral of Christ-<br />

Church, Dublin: the tithes amount to £300, of which<br />

£200 is payable to the chancellor, and £100 to the<br />

vicar; and the entire tithes of the benefice amount to<br />

£949. The church is a small ancient building. There<br />

are a glebe-house and five glebes in the union, com-<br />

prising 47a. 21p. In the R. C. divisions this parish is<br />

the head of a union or district, and has a chapel. About<br />

540 children are educated in six private schools; and<br />

there is a dispensary. Here are the remains of Gralla<br />

and Graystone castles.<br />

KILLENCARE, or KILLENKERE, a parish, partly<br />

in the barony of UPPER LOUGHTEE, but chiefly in that<br />

of CASTLERAGHAN, county of CAVAN, and province of<br />

ULSTER, 4 miles (W. S. W.) from Bailieborough, on the<br />

road to Virginia; containing 7600 inhabitants. This<br />

parish, which is also called Killinskere, comprises, ac-<br />

cording to the Ordnance survey, 15,962 1 /4 statute acres,<br />

of which 131 1 /4 are water, and there is some bog. The<br />

lands are principally arable, and in a tolerable state of<br />

cultivation; slate is found here, but of very inferior<br />

quality, and the quarries formerly worked have in con-<br />

sequence been discontinued: an ore supposed to be<br />

zinc has been discovered on the townland of Durry-<br />

ham, but it has not been yet worked. The living is a<br />

vicarage, in the diocese of Kilmore, and in the patron-<br />

age of the Bishop: the rectory is impropriate in the<br />

representatives of Richard, Earl of Westmeath: the<br />

tithes amount to £480. The church, for the erection of<br />

which the late Board of First Fruits granted £900 as a<br />

gift, and £1200 as a loan, in 1817, is a very neat struc-<br />

ture. The same Board, in 1816, gave £325 and lent<br />

£1050 towards the erection of the glebe-house, which is<br />

a handsome residence; the glebe comprises 380 acres.<br />

The R. C. parish is co-extensive with that of the Esta-<br />

blished Church: the chapel is a plain building, and<br />

there is also one at Clanaphillip. There is a place of<br />

worship for Presbyterians, in connexion with the Synod<br />

of Ulster, of the third class; also one for those in con-<br />

nexion with the Seceding Synod. About 440 children<br />

are taught in four public schools, of which one is sup-<br />

ported by Lord Farnham, and another by the Sankey<br />

family; and there are eight private schools, in which<br />

are about 480 children, and a Sunday-school. There<br />

are numerous mineral springs in the parish, some of<br />

which are used medicinally.<br />

KILLENELLICK.—See GALBALLY.<br />

KILLENEMOR, a parish, in the barony of FERMOY,<br />

county of CORK, and province of MUNSTER, 3 miles<br />

(S. W.) from Mitchelstown; containing 197 inhabitants.<br />

This small parish consists of only one townland, com-<br />

prising 410 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe<br />

act, and valued at £374 per annum, and for all civil<br />

purposes has merged into the parish of Glanworth. It<br />

is a rectory, in the diocese of Cloyne, and forms the<br />

corps of the prebend of Killenemor, in the cathedral of<br />

Cloyne, and in the patronage of the Bishop: the tithes<br />

amount to £40, and form part of the economy fund of<br />

the cathedral. There is neither church, glebe-house,<br />

nor glebe. In the R. C. divisions it is part of the dis-<br />

trict of Glanworth.<br />

KILLENORTY, or KILLENOUGHT, a parish, in<br />

the barony of PUBBLEBRIEN, county of LIMERICK, and<br />

province of MUNSTER, 2 1 /2 miles (S. W.) from Patricks-<br />

well, on the road from Croom to Limerick; containing<br />

390 inhabitants. The land is generally good, and is<br />

based on limestone. It is a rectory, in the diocese of<br />

Limerick, forming part of the bishop’s mensal. In the<br />

R. C. divisions it is part of the union or district of<br />

Loughmore.<br />

KILLENTIERNA, a parish, in the barony of TRUGH-<br />

ENACKMY, county of KERRY, and province of MUNSTER,<br />

3 miles (S. by W.) from Castleisland, on the road to<br />

Killarney; containing 2079 inhabitants. This parish,<br />

which is situated on the river Brown Flesk, comprises<br />

13,127 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act,<br />

and valued at £4194. 15. 2 3 /4. per annum. The soil is<br />

light and gravelly; limestone, which abounds, is used<br />

for manure, and the state of agriculture is gradually<br />

improving: there are several patches of bog. Dicks-<br />

grove, the finely wooded demesne of R. Meredith, Esq.,<br />

is in this parish. The living is a rectory, in the diocese<br />

of Ardfert and Aghadoe, united to that of Dysert, and<br />

together constituting the union of Killentierna, in the
