£461. 10. 9½., payable in moieties to the impropriator<br />

and the incumbent. The church, situated at Collooney,<br />

is a handsome building, in the ancient English style of<br />

architecture, and contains some good monuments, of<br />

Which one to the memory of the late Mrs. Cooper, exe-<br />

cuted at Florence, is a fine piece of sculpture; it was<br />

enlarged in 1834, by aid of a gift of £700 from the<br />

Ecclesiastical Commissioners, and donations of £800<br />

from Mr. Cooper and £50 from Major O’Hara. The<br />

glebe-house was built by aid of a gift of £400 and a loan<br />

of £400, in 1819, from the late Board of First Fruits:<br />

the glebe comprises 20 acres. In the R. C. divisions<br />

this parish is the head of a union or district, called<br />

Collooney, comprising also the parish of Kilvarnet, and<br />

containing three chapels, situated respectively at Col-<br />

looney and Currownagh, in Ballysadere, and the third<br />

in Kilvarnet. There are seven schools, two of which, at<br />

Ballysadere and Collooney, were built and are supported<br />

by Mr. Cooper; also five private pay schools and Sun-<br />

day schools. On an eminence immediately over the<br />

harbour is an ancient burial-ground of considerable<br />

extent, still used, in which are the remains of a<br />

church.<br />

BALLYSAX, a parish, partly in the barony of WEST<br />

OPHALY, but chiefly in that of EAST OPHALY, county of<br />

KILDARE, and province of LEINSTER, 2¾ miles (S. W. by<br />

W.) from Kilcullen-Bridge; containing 996 inhabitants.<br />

This parish is situated within a mile of the great south-<br />

ern road from Dublin to Cork, and comprises 4995<br />

statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act, and<br />

valued at £2817 per annum. The greater portion is<br />

under tillage, and the remainder, with the exception of<br />

a large tract of bog and waste, is meadow and pasture;<br />

the soil is fertile, and the system of agriculture improved.<br />

Adjoining the parish is the celebrated race-course called<br />

the Curragh; and within its limits is Ballysax House,<br />

the elegant seat of G. O’Kelly, Esq. On the Curragh<br />

are also Cobourg Lodge, the residence of J. Maher, Esq.;<br />

Brownstone House, of G. Knox, Esq.; Ballyfair House,<br />

occupied during the races by His Excellency the Lord-<br />

Lieutenant; Lark Lodge, of W. Disney, Esq.; Maddens-<br />

town House, of W. Kelly, Esq.; Turf Lodge, of R.<br />

Hunter,. Esq.; Jockey Hall, of G. Watts, Esq.; Athgar-<br />

von Lodge, of the Hon. F. Ponsonby; and Maddens-<br />

town, of Terence Kelly, Esq. A fair is held at the<br />

French Furze on July 26th. The living is a rectory and<br />

vicarage, in the diocese of Kildare, and in the patronage<br />

of the Crown: the tithes amount to £186. The church,<br />

a neat edifice, with a square embattled tower crowned<br />

with pinnacles, was erected by aid of a loan from the<br />

late Board of First Fruits, in 1826; and the Ecclesias-<br />

tical Commissioners have lately granted £249 for its<br />

repair. There is a glebe-house, with a glebe comprising<br />

19a. 2r. In the R. C. divisions the parish forms part of<br />

the union or district of Sancroft. A school is supported<br />

by local subscription, aided by an endowment bequeathed<br />

by the late Rev. William Tew; and there is also a school<br />

in connection with the National Board. In these about<br />

60 boys and 40 girls are instructed; and there is a pay<br />

school, in which are 20 boys and 20 girls. The Rev. W.<br />

Tew also bequeathed £50 in the 3½ per cent, for the<br />

benefit of the poor.<br />

BALLYSCADANE, a parish, in the barony of COST-<br />

LEA, county of LIMERICK, and province of MUNSTER, 4<br />

miles (S. E. by S.) from Hospital. It is situated on the<br />

road from Galbally to Hospital, and comprises 893 statute<br />

acres, as applotted under the tithe act: the land is in<br />

general of good quality, and chiefly in pasture. Nearly<br />

in the centre of the parish is Ryves Castle, the residence<br />

of P. Ryan, Esq.; and at no great distance is Scarteen,<br />

the property also of Mr. Ryan, but at present unoccupied.<br />

It is a rectory, in the diocese of Emly, united from time<br />

immemorial to the entire rectory of Glanbane, together<br />

constituting the corps of the deanery of Emly, in the<br />

patronage of the Crown: the tithes amount to £40. 12. 6.,<br />

and of the whole union to £88. 4. The lands of the<br />

deanery, called the mensal lands of Gurteen, comprise<br />

179a. 2r. 15p., statute measure, let on lease at £92. 6. 1½<br />

per annum, with an annual renewal fine of £27. 13. 10¼.:<br />

the entire income of the deanery, as returned by the<br />

Commissioners of Ecclesiastical Inquiry, amounts to<br />

£225. 16. 10. per annum. The church has long since<br />

fallen into decay: in the churchyard, which is within<br />

the demesne of Ryves Castle, is a handsome monumental<br />

obelisk to the family of Ryan. There is no glebe-house<br />

in either parish; the glebe comprises 4a. 2r. 36p., and<br />

there is also a glebe of 7 acres in the adjoining parish of<br />

Galbally. In the R. C. divisions this parish forms part<br />

of the union or district of Emly.<br />

BALLYSCULLION, a grange, in the barony of<br />

TOOME, county of ANTRIM, and province of ULSTER,<br />

4 miles (N. W.) from Randalstown; containing 3351<br />

inhabitants. This place, which is an extra-parochial<br />

district, never having paid either church cess or tithe,<br />

is situated on the road from Portglenone to Antrim, and<br />

is bounded on the north-west by the river Bann; it<br />

comprises, according to the Ordnance survey, 4279¼<br />

statute acres. There is no provision for the cure of<br />

souls; the members of the Established Church attend<br />

divine service in the contiguous parish of Duneane, in<br />

the diocese of Connor. In the R. C. divisions it forms<br />

part of the union or district of Ballyscullion, in the<br />

diocese of Derry; the chapel is a small plain building;<br />

there is also a place of worship for Presbyterians.<br />

BALLYSCULLION, a parish, partly in the barony<br />

of UPPER TOOME, county of ANTRIM, but chiefly in that<br />

of LOUGHINSHOLIN, county of LONDONDERRY, and<br />

province of ULSTER; containing, with the post-town of<br />

Bellaghy, 6453 inhabitants. This parish, which is inter-<br />

sected by the roads leading respectively from Castle-<br />

Dawson to Portglenone, and from Maghera to Bellaghy,<br />

comprises, according to the Ordnance survey, 12,750¼<br />

statute acres, of which 10,617¼ are in the county of<br />

Londonderry, 2406 are part of Lough Beg, and 72¾<br />

part of the river Bann, which here forms the boun-<br />

dary of the parish, barony, and county. On the plan-<br />

tation of Ulster, these lands were granted by Jas. I. to<br />

the Irish Society, and by them transferred to the Vint-<br />

ners’ Company of London, who founded the castle and<br />

town of Bellaghy, described under its own head. At a<br />

very early period a monastery was founded on an island<br />

in Lough Beg, about two miles from the shore, then<br />

called Ynis Teda, but now Church island, from the<br />

parish church having been subsequently erected there:<br />

this establishment continued to flourish till the disso-<br />

lution, and some of the lands which belonged to it are<br />

still tithe-free. Two townlands in the parish belong to<br />

the see of Derry, and the remainder has been leased in<br />

perpetuity by the Vintners’ Company to the Marquess
