vince of LEINSTER, on the road from Dublin to Wex-<br />

ford; containing 11 dwellings and 72 inhabitants. Petty<br />

sessions are held here once in three weeks.<br />

KILPIPE, a parish, partly in the barony of GOREY,<br />

county of WEXFORD, but chiefly in that of BALLINACOR,<br />

county of WICKLOW, and province of LEINSTER, 9 miles<br />

(S. W. by S.) from Rathdrmn, on the road to Clonegal;<br />

containing 3377 inhabitants. It comprises I960 statute<br />

acres, as applotted under the tithe act. The surface is<br />

varied, and part of the Croghan mountain is within its<br />

limits; the system of agriculture is greatly improved;<br />

there is an extensive bog near the river Derry, and some<br />

small turbaries near the mountain. Wingfield is the<br />

residence of H. Brownrigg, Esq.; in the grounds is an<br />

ancient rath. There are also several handsome and sub-<br />

stantial farm-houses, including those of R. and W. Dowse,<br />

Esqrs., and others. The living is a vicarage, in the dio-<br />

cese of Ferns, episcopally united in 1782 to the vicarage<br />

of Killinor, and in the patronage of the Representa-<br />

tives of Mrs. Hatten; the rectory is impropriate in Sir<br />

R. Steele, Bart., the tithes amount to £378. 9. 2¾., of<br />

which £230. 15. 4¾. is payable to the irnpropriator, and<br />

£147. 13. 10. to the vicar; and the tithes of the entire<br />

benefice, to £203. 1. 6½. The glebe-house, situated in<br />

the parish of Killinor, is a neat residence, towards the<br />

erection of which the late Board of First Fruits gave<br />

£350 and a loan of £180, in 1819; the glebe comprises<br />

17a. 3r. 2Op. The church, a neat building, was repaired<br />

and enlarged by a loan of £100, in 1817, from the same<br />

Board, and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners have re-<br />

cently granted £183 for its further repair. In the R. C.<br />

divisions the parish forms part of the union or dis-<br />

trict of Killavany. About 80 children are taught in the<br />

school of Carraghlean, which is supported by the trus-<br />

tees of Erasmus Smith’s charity under the patronage<br />

of Earl Fitzwilliam, who has endowed it with two acres<br />

of land and built the school-house, a good stone building,<br />

at a cost of £150; there is also a private school, in which<br />

are 130 children. There are some remains of the old<br />

church, the burial-ground of which is still used; and at<br />

Kilcashel are also the ruins of a church.<br />

KILPOOLE, a parish, in the barony of ARKLOW,<br />

county of WICKLOW, and province of LEINSTER; con-<br />

taining, with the greater portion of the town of Wick-<br />

low, 2269 inhabitants. This parish, which is situated<br />

on the eastern coast, was anciently the extremity of the<br />

English pale, and formed part of the possessions of the<br />

priory of Kilmainham: it comprises 2695 statute acres,<br />

as applotted under the tithe act. Off the coast is the<br />

sand bank called the Horse Shoe, which extends south-<br />

west for about a mile, with about 5 feet of water on it at<br />

the north end, which is the shallowest part. It is a<br />

vicarage, in the diocese of Dublin and Glendalough,<br />

forming part of the union of Wicklow; the rectory is<br />

impropriate in Earl Fitzwilliam. The tithes amount to<br />

£120, of which half is payable to the impropriator and<br />

half to the vicar. There are four private schools, in<br />

which are about 120 children.<br />

KILQUADE.—See KILCOOLE.<br />

KILQUANE, or ST. PATRICK’S NORTH, a cha-<br />

pelry, in the barony of BUNRATTY, county of CLARE,<br />

and province of MUNSTER, 2 miles (N.) from Limerick,<br />

on the north side of the river Shannon; containing 2028<br />

inhabitants. It comprises 3719 statute acres, as ap-<br />

plotted under the tithe act, which are chiefly in tillage:<br />

the state of agriculture has of late years considerably<br />

improved, from its proximity to the city of Limerick, of<br />

which it includes a small portion of the north liberties;<br />

midway between Corbally mills and St. Thomas’s Island<br />

is the boundary mark called the” Liberty stone.” There<br />

is a considerable portion of bog; and limestone, con-<br />

taining fossil shells, is used for building and burnt for<br />

manure. On the river Blackwater, which runs into the<br />

Shannon, are two large flour-mills, the property of S.<br />

Caswell, Esq. Manorial courts for the recovery of<br />

small debts are occasionally held at Athlunkard and<br />

Parteen; and at Ardnacrusha is a station of the con-<br />

stabulary police. The seats are Spring Hill, the resi-<br />

dence of P. M c Adam, Esq.; Quinsborough, of Martin<br />

Honan, Esq. (formerly the residence of Lord George<br />

Quin); Whitehall, of Capt. R. Kane; Fairy Hill, of E.<br />

Burnard, Esq.; Thomas Island, of J. Tuthill, Esq.; and<br />

Cottage, of R, Rogers, Esq. It is a perpetual cure, form-<br />

ing with Singland, or St. Patrick’s South, the rectory<br />

of St. Patrick, in the diocese of Limerick, and part of<br />

the union of St. Patrick and of the corps of the trea-<br />

surership of the cathedral of Limerick. The tithes,<br />

amounting to £184. 12. 3¾, are payable to the rector;<br />

the curate has a stipend of £75, and £12 per ann. from<br />

Primate Boulter’s augmentation fund. The church<br />

is a neat building with a tower and spire, towards which<br />

the late Board of First Fruits granted £700, in 1819.<br />

In the R. C. divisions it forms part of the union or dis-<br />

trict of Parteen, or Kilquane, which also includes part<br />

of the parish of Killely or Meelick, and contains the<br />

chapels of Ardnacrusha and Parteen; the former is a<br />

handsome edifice of hewn stone. The parochial school<br />

is chiefly supported by the rector, who allows £10 per<br />

ann. and discharges the rent of the school-house; and at<br />

Parteen is a large national school, chiefly supported by<br />

a grant of £30 per ann. from the Board. The school-<br />

house, erected by Mr. Honan in 1833, consists of a<br />

centre and two projecting wings, and contains apart-<br />

ments for the master and mistress. The ruins of the<br />

old church still remain in the burial-ground.<br />

KILQUANE, or KILCOAN, a parish, partly in the<br />

barony of CONDONS and CLONGIBBONS, but chiefly in<br />

that of BARRYMORE, county of CORK, and province of<br />

MUNSTER, 7 miles (N. E.) from Cork, on the road to<br />

Tallow 3 containing 2335 inhabitants. It comprises<br />

5842 statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act, and<br />

valued at £2725 per annum. The land is generally fer-<br />

tile, but part of it is irreclaimable mountain, and the<br />

state of agriculture is improving: the mountain of<br />

Knockcumcreagh rises to a considerable elevation, and<br />

affords pasturage for cattle. There is a paper-mill at<br />

Knockra. It is a rectory, in the diocese of Cork, form-<br />

ing part of the corps of the prebend of Killaspigmullane<br />

in St. Finbarr’s cathedral: the tithes amount to £265.<br />

The church was rebuilt by a gift of £650 from the late<br />

Board of First Fruits, in 1820. In the R. C. divisions<br />

it is part of the union or district of Cahirlog, or Glaun-<br />

tane, and has a large chapel at Knockra. There are<br />

two public schools, one of which is endowed with a be-<br />

quest of £10 per ann. from the late Rev. M. O’Keane, in<br />

which 250 children are educated; and a private school,<br />

in which 40 are educated,<br />

KILQUANE, a parish, in the barony of LONGFORD,<br />

county of GALWAY, and province of CONNAUGHT, 3½<br />

miles (W.) from Eyrecourt, on the road to Loughrea;
