magan. There are two private schools, in which are<br />

about 40 boys and 20 girls.<br />

BALLYTORE, a post-town, in the parish of TIMO-<br />

LIN, barony of NARRAGH and RHEBAN EAST, county of<br />

KILDARE, and province of LEINSTER, 13 miles (S. S. W.)<br />

from Naas, and 28½ miles (S. W. by S.) from Dublin;<br />

containing 141 houses and 933 inhabitants. This town,<br />

which is situated on the river Griese and on the mail<br />

coach road from Dublin to Carlow, was, in 1798, taken<br />

by the insurgents, in whose possession it remained two<br />

days, and by whom it was set on fire. It is conspicuous<br />

for the neatness and regularity of its appearance, and<br />

is principally inhabited by members of the Society of<br />

Friends; it has obtained considerable celebrity from<br />

its school, originally established in 1726, by Abraham<br />

Shackleton, a member of that society, and in which the<br />

celebrated Edmund Burke received the rudiments of<br />

his education. Ballytore House is the residence of T. R.<br />

Whitty, Esq. Fairs are held on March 10th, Aug. 15th,<br />

and Nov. 30th. A constabulary police force has been<br />

stationed in the town. There is a place of worship for<br />

the Society of Friends, established in 1707; a Lancas-<br />

terian school is supported partly by subscription and<br />

partly by weekly payments from the children; and here<br />

are a dispensary and a savings’ bank. Mary Lead-<br />

beater, daughter of Mr. Richard Shackleton, and author<br />

of “Cottage Dialogues” and other works calculated to<br />

improve the social condition of the Irish peasantry, was<br />

a native of this place.—See TIMOLIN.<br />

BALLYTRAIN, a village, in the parish of AUGHNA-<br />

MULLEN, barony of CREMORNE, county of MONAGHAN,<br />

and province of ULSTER, 5 miles (S.) from Ballibay, on<br />

the old road to Shercock; containing 44 houses and 220<br />

inhabitants. It is a station of the constabulary police;<br />

and fairs, chiefly for pigs, cattle, and sheep, are held on<br />

Feb. 1st, March 17th, May 1st, June 11th, Aug. 1st,<br />

Sept. 29th, Nov. 1st, and Dec. 23rd. In 1834, a R. C.<br />

chapel was built, at an expense of £100. The lake of<br />

Ballytrain is an extensive sheet of water supplying<br />

several mills, particularly one belonging to R. A. Minnett,<br />

Esq. Near the village is Lake View, the residence of<br />

the Rev. E. Mayne. In the vicinity are several forts,<br />

one of which is of great extent and commands a view<br />

of some picturesque scenery, embracing twelve lakes.—<br />

BALLYTRUSTIN, a parish, in the barony of ARDES,<br />

county of DOWN, and province of ULSTER, 1 mile (S. E.)<br />

from Portaferry; containing 735 inhabitants. This<br />

parish, which is not noticed in the Down survey, is<br />

situated on the eastern coast; it comprises, according to<br />

the Ordnance survey, including detached portions, 1681¾<br />

statute acres. The soil is fertile, and the lands are all<br />

in an excellent state of cultivation, producing abundant<br />

crops. It is a vicarage, in the diocese of Down, and is<br />

part of the union of Ballyphilip and corps of the chan-<br />

cellorship of Down; the rectory is impropriate in John<br />

Echlin, Esq. The tithes amount to £190. 4. 2½. of which<br />

£117. 14. 5. is payable to the impropriator, and £72. 9. 9½.<br />

to the vicar. There are some remains of the ancient<br />

church, and the churchyard is the chief burial-place<br />

of the R. C. parishioners. In the R. C. divisions it<br />

forms part of each of the unions or districts of Lower<br />

and Upper Ardes. At Kerney is a school of 100 boys<br />

and 80 girls, aided by subscription and an annual dona-<br />

tion of £8 from Dr, Blacker, on whose estate the school-<br />

house was erected by a grant of £100 from the Lord-<br />

Lieutenant’s fund. At Ballyfounder is a very large rath,<br />

nearly perfect.<br />

BALLYVALDEN, a parish, in the barony of BAL-<br />

LAGHKEEN, county of WEXFORD, and province of LEIN-<br />

STER, 12½ miles (S. by W.) from Gorey; containing<br />

1379 inhabitants. It is situated near the eastern coast,<br />

and comprises 2338 statute acres, as applotted under<br />

the tithe act. The living is a vicarage, in the diocese<br />

of Ferns, held with the impropriate curacies of Kilmuck-<br />

ridge and Millenagh; and in the patronage of the Bishop;<br />

the rectory is impropriate in the Earl of Portsmouth.<br />

The tithes amount to £179. 7. 9., of which £112. 6. 2½.<br />

is payable to the impropriator, and £67. 1. 6½. to the<br />

vicar. The church of the union is at Kilmuckridge. In<br />

the R. C. divisions the parish forms part of the union or<br />

district of Black water. There are three hedge schools,<br />

in which about 170 children are educated.<br />

BALLYVALLOO, a parish, in the barony of BAL-<br />

LAGHKEEN, county of WEXFORD, and province of LEIN-<br />

STER, 6½ miles (N. E. by N.) from Wexford; containing<br />

809 inhabitants. This parish is situated on the coast of<br />

St. George’s channel, and on the old road from Wexford<br />

to Dublin; and comprises 1725 statute acres, as ap-<br />

plotted under the tithe act. It is an impropriate curacy<br />

endowed with the vicarial tithes, in the diocese of Ferns,<br />

and. forms part of the union of Ardcolme; the rectorial<br />

tithes belong to the almshouse at Enniscorthy. The<br />

entire tithes amount to £115. 8. 3½., of which £59.13. 3½.<br />

is the portion belonging to the almshouse, and £55. 15.<br />

is payable to the incumbent; the glebe comprises 20<br />

acres. In the R. C. divisions it is included in the Black-<br />

water union or district. It is not recognised as a parish<br />

in civil matters, but is considered as forming part of the<br />

parish of Killely.<br />

BALLYVARY, a market-town, in the parish of KIL-<br />

DECAMOGUE, barony of GALLEN, county of MAYO, and<br />

province of CONNAUGHT, 5½ miles (N. E. by E.) from<br />

Castlebar: the population is returned with the parish.<br />

It is situated on the road from Castlebar to Swinford,<br />

and near a small river issuing from Lough Cullen.<br />

The market is on Wednesday; and fairs are held on<br />

May 29th, Aug. 18th, and Nov. 14th. Here is a station<br />

of the constabulary police. In the town is a R. C.<br />

chapel, erected on a site given by the Rev. L. Rut-<br />

ledge, of Bloomfield. In the immediate vicinity are Bally-<br />

vary House, the seat of C. Goodwin, Esq.; and Cur-<br />

rangowan, of E. Deane, Esq.—See KILDECAMOGUE.<br />

BALLYVAUGHAN, a village, in the parish of DROM-<br />

CREEHY, barony of BURREN, county of CLARE, and pro-<br />

vince of MUNSTER, 6 miles (W.) from Burren; contain-<br />

ing 151 inhabitants. This place is situated on a small<br />

bay to which it gives name on the western coast, and<br />

opening into the bay of Galway. The village, in 1831,<br />

contained 23 houses, since which time several new houses<br />

have been built, and it is progressively improving. Some<br />

of the inhabitants are employed in the herring fishery,<br />

which is carried on successfully on this coast. The bay<br />

is very shallow and in general fit only for boats; but<br />

small vessels may anchor in 2½ fathoms of water on<br />

good holding ground, about two or three cables’ length<br />

south of Finvarra Point. There are some remains of<br />

an old quay, which is now of little use; a new quay<br />

would add greatly to the prosperity of the place, as, in-
