BALLYDELOUGHY, or BALLYLOUGH, a parish,<br />

in the barony of FERMOY, county of CORK, and pro-<br />

vince of MUNSTER, 1½ mile (E. by N.) from Doneraile;<br />

containing 718 inhabitants. This parish, which is situ-<br />

ated near the river Funcheon, and on the south of the<br />

road from Doneraile to Mitchelstown, comprises 1200<br />

statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act, and<br />

valued at £1891 per ann.: the soil is good, and limestone<br />

exists in abundance. It is a vicarage, in the diocese of<br />

Cloyne, and forms part of the union and corps of the<br />

prebend of Glanworth in the cathedral of Cloyne; the<br />

rectory is impropriate in the Earl of Donoughmore,<br />

The tithes amount to £159. 16. 0½.. of which £69. 19. 5½.<br />

is payable to the impropriator, and the remainder to the<br />

vicar. The ruins of the church still remain in the burial-<br />

ground. In the R. C. divisions also it is included in the<br />

union or district of Glanworth: the chapel is at Ballyn-<br />

dangan. About 50 children are educated in a private<br />

school. The late Rev. John Kelleher, P. P. of Glan-<br />

worth, bequeathed £50 towards the erection of a school-<br />

house at Ballyndangan, in aid of which an application<br />

will be made to the National Board. About a quarter<br />

of a mile to the north of the ruins of the church are<br />

those of the ancient castle of Ballylough. Ballyndangan<br />

the ancient seat of the family of Terry, is now occupied<br />

as a farm-house.<br />

BALLYDONNELL, a parish, in the barony of ARK-<br />

LOW, county of WICKLOW, and province of LEINSTER,<br />

4½ miles (S. E.) from Rathdrum; containing 645 inha-<br />

bitants. This parish, which is situated on the lower road<br />

from Arklow to Wicklow, comprises 2803 statute acres.<br />

It is a rectory and vicarage, in the diocese of Dublin<br />

and Glendalough, and forms part of the union of Cas-<br />

tlemacadam: the ecclesiastical duties were separated<br />

from that union by act of council in 1830, by which<br />

Ballydonnell was included in the newly erected district<br />

parish of Redcross, the church of which is situated in<br />

that village.<br />

BALLYDUFF, county of KERRY,—See BENMORE.<br />

BALLYDUFF, a parish, in the barony of CORKAGXTI-<br />

NEY, county of KERRY, and province of MUNSTER, 7½<br />

miles (N. E.) from Dingle; containing 420 inhabitants,<br />

of which number, 92 are in the village. This parish,<br />

which is situated near the road from Dingle to Tralee,<br />

comprises 9825 statute acres, as applotted under the<br />

tithe act. Nearly one-half is mountain and bog, partly<br />

reclaimable; that portion of the land which is under<br />

tillage is of good quality. The only seat is Liscarney,<br />

the property of T. B. Hussey, Esq. The village contains<br />

15 houses, and is a constabulary police station. The<br />

living is an impropriate curacy, in the diocese of Ard-<br />

fert and Aghadoe, the rectory being wholly impropriate<br />

in the Earl of Cork; the tithes amount to £55, payable<br />

to the impropriator, out of which £10 per annum is<br />

allowed for the discharge of the clerical duties. There<br />

are some ruins of the church in the ancient burial-ground,<br />

near which is a small glebe. In the R. C. divisions this<br />

parish is included in the union or district of Castlegre-<br />

gory. On the border of the parish is a romantic glen,<br />

called Maharabo, where it is said the last wolf in this<br />

part of the country was killed; the particular spot is<br />

still called Wolf Step.<br />

BALLYEASTON, a district parish, in the barony of<br />

UPPER ANTRIM, county of ANTRIM,, and province of UL-<br />

STER. on the road from Ballyclare to Larne; containing<br />

with, the post-town of Ballyclare and the grange of Doagh,<br />

5892 inhabitants. It consists of the ancient parishes of<br />

Ballycor and Rashee, comprising, according to the Ord-<br />

nance survey, 13,790½ statute acres; about one-half of<br />

which are arable. The village, which is 1½ Irish mile (N,)<br />

from Ballyclare, is situated at the junction of several<br />

roads, near the Six-mile-water, and in 1831 contained 61<br />

houses. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the diocese<br />

of Connor, and in the patronage of the Prebendary of<br />

Carncastle: the income of the curate is £103, L 6½. per<br />

ann., of which £69. 4. 7½ arises from tithe, £13. 6. 11.<br />

is added by the prebendary, and £20 from Primate Boul-<br />

ter’s fund. The church was erected in 1786. There is<br />

neither glebe-hotise nor glebe. In the R, C. divisions<br />

it forms part of the union or district of Carrickfergus<br />

and Larne. There are four places of worship for Pres-<br />

byterians; one in connection with the Synod of Ulster,<br />

of the first class 3 one with the Presbytery of Antrim, of<br />

the second class; one with the Seceding Synod, also<br />

of the second class; and one for Covenanters, which is<br />

open every alternate Sunday. There are four schools,<br />

in which are about 140 boys and 90 girls; also nine pay<br />

schools, in which are about 160 boys and 110 girls.<br />

BALLYEGRAN, a village, in the parish of CASTLE-<br />

TOWN-CONYERS, barony of UPPER CONNELLO EAST,<br />

county of LIMERICK, and province of MUNSTER, 5 miles<br />

(N. W.) from Charleville; containing 172 inhabitants.<br />

This small village, consisting only of a few thatched<br />

cabins, is situated on the road from Charleville to Bal-<br />

lingarry, and gives name to the R. C. union or district,<br />

comprising the parishes of Castletown-Conyers, Kil-<br />

meedy and Drumcollogher 3 the chapel is a small build-<br />

ing. Not far distant are the remains of a heathen<br />

temple.—See CASTLETOWN-CONYERS.<br />

BALLYELLIN, a parish, partly in the barony of<br />

ST. MULLIN’S, but chiefly in that of Idrone East,<br />

county of Carlow, and province of LEINSTER, adjacent<br />

to Graigue and Goresbridge; containing I760 inhabit-<br />

ants. This parish consists of two detached portions<br />

separated by the parish of Slyguff, one of which contains<br />

five townlands, and the other, two: it is bounded on<br />

the north by the river Barrow, which separates it from<br />

the county of Kilkenny, and over which there is a bridge<br />

at Goresbridge; and comprises 5266 statute acres, of<br />

which 4754 are applotted under the tithe act and valued<br />

at £4052 per annum. Here is a quarry of black marble,<br />

used for tombstones and chimney-pieces. Ballyellin<br />

House is the residence of Walter Blackney, Esq. It is<br />

a rectory, in the diocese of Leighlin, and forms part of<br />

the union of Lorum: the tithes amount to £413, 1. 6½.<br />

The ruins of the church are situated within a burial-<br />

ground near, the road from Borris to Goresbridge. In<br />

the R. C. divisions it is in the union or district of Bag-<br />

nalstown or Dunleckney. On the lands of Clowater are<br />

the ruins of a castle.<br />

BALLYFARNON, a village, in the parish of KIL-<br />

RONAN, barony of BOYLE, county of ROSCOMMON, and<br />

province of CONNAUGHT, 3 miles (N, W-) from Keadue;<br />

containing 150 inhabitants. This is an improving place,<br />

and promises to increase in importance from the con-<br />

templated new mail coach road from Carrick- on-Shannon<br />

to Sligo, which is intended to pass through the village.<br />

A customary weekly market has been established 3 and
