tlemen’s seats are Dorrington House, the residence of<br />

R. Jones, Esq.; Walterstown, of St. George Gray, Esq.;<br />

and Lissenode, of J. Russell, Esq. In the hamlet of<br />

Walterstown is a constabulary police station. The<br />

parish is in the diocese of Meath; the rectory and<br />

vicarage form part of the union of Ballyloughloe, the<br />

incumbent of which presents to the perpetual curacy of<br />

Drumraney. The tithes amount to £290.15. 4½., payable<br />

to the incumbent of the union: the income of the per-<br />

petual curate is £100 per annum, of which £60 is paid<br />

by the incumbent, and £40 out of Primate Boulter’s<br />

augmentation fund. Two townlands, called High and<br />

Low Baskin, pay tithes to the parish of Castlelost; they<br />

are impropriate in Lord Kilmaine, and extend over about<br />

500 acres. The glebe-house was erected in 1814, by aid<br />

of a gift of £450, and a loan of £50 from the late Board<br />

of First Fruits; the glebe comprises 32 acres. The<br />

church, a neat building in good repair, was built in 1811,<br />

by aid of a gift of £500 from the same Board. In the<br />

R. C. divisions this parish is co-extensive with that of<br />

the Established Church: there is a chapel at Drumraney.<br />

About 100 children are taught in the three public schools<br />

of the parish, of which one was built by H. K. Digby,<br />

Esq; and there are three private schools, in which are<br />

about 120 children. There are several raths; also<br />

remains of old forts and towers at High Baskin, Dono-<br />

mona, and near Dorrington; and at Killininny, Bally-<br />

cloughdough, Ardnagard, and Walterstown, are remains<br />

of castles, formerly belonging to the Dillons, whose<br />

burial-place was anciently at Drumraney. Here is a<br />

holy well, dedicated to St. Enan; his festival is cele-<br />

brated on the Sunday after Sept. 18th.<br />

DRUMRATT, a parish, in the barony of CORRAN,<br />

county of SLIGO, and province of CONNAUGHT, 3 miles<br />

(S.) from Ballymote, on the road from Boyle to Bally-<br />

mote; containing 1606 inhabitants. It is on the con-<br />

fines of the county of Roscommon, and comprises 3682<br />

statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act. The<br />

lands are principally under tillage, and there is a<br />

due portion of good grazing land, with a sufficient<br />

tract of bog for fuel. Limestone is quarried for agri-<br />

cultural purposes. Abbeyville is the residence of J.<br />

Fleming, Esq. It is in the diocese of Achonry; the<br />

rectory is impropriate in Sir H. Montgomery, Bart., and<br />

the vicarage forms part of the union of Emlyfadd. The<br />

tithes amount to £204. 13. 11., of which £95. 3. 3. is<br />

payable to the impropriator, and £109.10. 8. to the vicar.<br />

In the R. C. divisions the parish forms part of the<br />

union or district of Tumore; the chapel is at Culfader.<br />

There are two private schools, in which are about 90<br />

boys and 40 girls. An abbey was founded here by St.<br />

Fechin, of which the last abbot of whom there is any<br />

record, died in 1016; it afterwards became the parish<br />

church, and there are still some remains.<br />

DRUMREILLY, a parish, partly in the barony<br />

of TULLAGHAGH, county of CAVAN, and province of<br />

ULSTER, and partly in that of DROMAHAIRE, but<br />

chiefly in that of CARRIGALLEN, county of LEITRIM,<br />

and province of CONNAUGHT, 2½ miles (E. by N.) from<br />

Ballinamore, on the road to Killeshandra; containing<br />

9278 inhabitants. This parish was separated from Tem-<br />

pleport by act of council in 1835, and comprises 4373<br />

statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act, besides<br />

a great portion of mountain. There are large grazing<br />

farms, and a vast quantity of bog. Limestone is found.<br />

here. The parish is intersected by Lake Gorradise, on<br />

which stands Gorradise, the residence of W. C. Percy,<br />

Esq., and Bush Hill, of C. Gerard, Esq; and in the<br />

vicinity is Corduff, the property of W. Penrose, Esq.<br />

There is a small island in the lake, called Robbers<br />

island. The living is a vicarage, in the diocese of Kil-<br />

more, and in the patronage of the Bishop: the rectory<br />

is appropriate to the see. The tithes amount to £300,<br />

of which £200 is payable to the bishop, and £100 to the<br />

vicar. There is no glebe-house: the glebe comprises<br />

365 acres, of which 282 are profitable land, valued at<br />

£322. 15. 6½. per annum. The church is a plain struc-<br />

ture, in good repair, built in 1737, by William Gore,<br />

Esq. In the R. C. divisions it is divided into three<br />

parochial benefices, Upper Drumreilly, Lower Drum-<br />

reilly, and Ballinagleragh, containing three chapels, be-<br />

sides a fourth annexed to Lower Drumreilly, called the<br />

mountain chapel. About 500 children are educated in<br />

seven public, and 110 in two private schools; there is<br />

also a Sunday school.<br />

DRUMSHALLON, a parish, in the barony of FER-<br />

RARD, county of LOUTH, and province of LEINSTER, 4<br />

miles (N.) from Drogheda, on the coast road to Dundalk;<br />

containing 1048 inhabitants. This parish was distin-<br />

guished as the site of a monastery founded at Druimineas-<br />

cluinn, now Drumshallon, by St. Patrick, for Canons<br />

Regular, of which the abbot Tiarnach, who died in 876,<br />

and some of his successors were generally styled Bishops:<br />

in 969, being in the possession of the Danes, it was<br />

plundered by Muirceartagh, Prince of Oileach, and son<br />

of Donell, King of Ireland, on which occasion many of<br />

the Danish occupants were killed. The priory of the<br />

Holy Trinity, now Christ-Church, Dublin, had a cell<br />

of three canons at this place; but Albert, Archbishop<br />

of Armagh, desirous of reforming the state of religion,<br />

suppressed it, as preserving no regular order or disci-<br />

pline. The parish comprises, according to the Ordnance<br />

survey, 3585½ statute acres, including 372 acres in the<br />

detached townland of Labanstown on the sea coast, and<br />

9¾ acres in Lough Kircock. Drumshallon is the residence<br />

of Gorges Henzill, Esq. The living is a rectory, in the<br />

diocese of Armagh, partly appropriate to the Dean and<br />

Chapter of Christ-Church, Dublin, and partly forming<br />

part of the corps of the precentorship in that cathedral,<br />

annexed to which are lands here comprising 494a. Ir.<br />

29p. statute measure, let on lease to Mr. Henzill, at a<br />

rent of £46. 3. 1., with an annual renewal fine of £77.<br />

10. 9¼: the tithes amount to £178. 17. 4½., wholly<br />

payable to the precentor. The Protestant parishioners<br />

attend divine service in the church of Ballymakenny, the<br />

incumbent of which is paid £10. 10. per annum by the<br />

appropriators, for performing the occasional duties of this<br />

parish. In the R. C. divisions the parish is partly in the<br />

union or district of Termonfechin, and partly in that of<br />

Moylary; the chapel is at Fieldstown. The parochial<br />

school is under the patronage of the Countess de Salis,<br />

and aided with £12. 12. per annum, from the appropria-<br />

tors; and there is a private school, in which are about<br />

40 boys and 20 girls.<br />

DRUMSHAMBO, a village, in the parish of KILTO-<br />

GHART, barony and county of LEITRIM, and province<br />

of CONNAUGHT; 6¾ miles (N. by E.) from Carrick-on-<br />

Shannon; containing 479 inhabitants. It is situated<br />

near the southern extremity of Lough Allen, not far<br />

from the point where the Shannon emerges from it,
