Hill Trevor, who was created Viscount Dangannon<br />

in 1765.<br />

KNOCKBRIDE, a parish, in the barony of CLON-<br />

KEE, county of CAVAN, and province of ULSTER, 5 miles<br />

(N.) from Bailieborough, on the road to Cootehill;<br />

containing 9746 inhabitants. This parish comprises,<br />

according to the Ordnance survey, 18,693 statute acres, of<br />

which 857 are under water, and 14,216 are applotted<br />

under the tithe act: there are about 1500 acres of bog<br />

and waste, the remainder being good arable and pasture<br />

land. There is a large oatmeal-mill. A court is held<br />

monthly at Corronary by the seneschal of the manor,<br />

for the recovery of debts under 405. The living is a<br />

rectory and vicarage, in the diocese of Kilmore, and<br />

in the patronage of the Bishop; the tithes amount to<br />

£350. The glebe-house is situated near the church; the<br />

glebe comprises 188 acres. The church, a small but<br />

very neat edifice in good repair, was built by a gift of<br />

£100 and a loan of £550 from the late Board of First<br />

Fruits, in 1820. The R. C. parish is co-extensive with<br />

that of the Established Church; there are two chapels,<br />

one a good substantial edifice, erected in 1821; the<br />

other a small thatched building, about to be taken down<br />

and rebuilt. There is a place of worship for Presbyte-<br />

rians in connection with the Seceding Synod, of the<br />

second class, and one for Wesleyan Methodists. About<br />

130 children are taught in two public schools, of which<br />

the parochial school is principally supported by the<br />

rector, and there are 11 private schools, in which are<br />

about 670 children.<br />

KNOCKCOMON, or KNOCKMOON, a parish,in the<br />

barony of LOWER DULEEK, county of MEATH, and pro-<br />

vince of LEINSTER, 2 miles (S.E.) from Slane, on the road<br />

from Navan to Drogheda, and on the river Boyne; con-<br />

taining 902 inhabitants. It is a curacy, in the diocese of<br />

Meath, forming part of the union of Duleek; the rectory<br />

is impropriate in the Marquess of Drogheda, to whom<br />

the tithes, amounting to £148. 1. 2½., are payable. In<br />

the R. C. divisions it forms part of the union or district<br />

of Donore, or Rosnaree, at which latter place there is a<br />

neat modern chapel, and another at the cross of Rath-<br />

drinath. About 80 children are educated in two private<br />

schools, to one of which Sir J. Hawkins Whitshed,<br />

Bart., allows a house and garden rent-free.<br />

KNOCKCROGHERY, a village, in the parish of<br />

KILLENVOY, barony of ATHLONE, county of ROSCOM-<br />

MON, and province of CONNAUGHT, 5 miles (S. E.) from<br />

Roscommon; containing 180 inhabitants. It consists<br />

of 45 houses, built on a hill, and has fairs on Aug. 22nd<br />

and Oct. 25th, the latter of which is a large sheep<br />

fair. It is a constabulary police station, and the manu-<br />

facture of tobacco-pipes is carried on to a considerable<br />

extent.<br />

KNOCKGRAFFON, a parish, in the barony of MID-<br />

DLETHIRD, county of TIPPERARY, and province of MUN-<br />

STER, 4 miles (S.) from Cashel, on the road to Cahir;<br />

containing 3520 inhabitants. It comprises 9169 statute<br />

acres, as applotted under the tithe act, and is moderately<br />

well cultivated; there is no bog, and the waste land is<br />

rapidly being brought into cultivation; here are several<br />

limestone quarries. The principal seats are Rockwell,<br />

the residence of J. Roe, Esq., Westgrove, of A. Riall,<br />

Esq.; Garranler, of L. Keating, Esq.; Woodinstown, of<br />

R. Carew, Esq.; and the glebe-house, of the Rev. N.<br />

Herbert. It is a rectory, in the diocese of Cashel, epis-<br />

copally united in 1803 to the rectory of Doggstown, and<br />

in the patronage of the Marquess of Ormonde; the tithes<br />

amount to £710. 15. 4., and of the entire benefice to<br />

£738. 8. 2. There is a glebe-house, with a glebe of 60<br />

acres; the church is a neat edifice. In the R. C. divi-<br />

sions it is the head of a union or district, called New<br />

Inn, comprising this parish and Doggstown, in each of<br />

which is a chapel. The parochial school-house, with<br />

an acre of land, was given by the late rector; and at<br />

Rockwell is a national school, aided by W. Roe, Esq.:<br />

these schools afford instruction to about 100 children,<br />

and there are five private schools, in which are about<br />

400 children. At Poolmucka is a dispensary. The moat<br />

of Knockgraffon covers a very considerable area, and<br />

from its great elevation forms a conspicuous object:<br />

contiguous are the ruins of the old church and of a cas-<br />

tle; and a town or considerable village is supposed to<br />

have existed here formerly.<br />

KNOCKLONG, or LONG, a parish, in the barony<br />

of COSTLEA, county of LIMERICK, and province of MUN-<br />

STER, 6 miles (S. E.) from Bruff, on the road from Li-<br />

merick to Mitchelstown; containing 2842 inhabitants.<br />

It comprises 4298 statute acres, as applotted under the<br />

tithe act, about one-fourth of which is under tillage, and<br />

the remainder consists of rich meadow and pasture land,<br />

principally in large dairy farms. The soil is in general<br />

very good, being based on limestone, of which there are<br />

two good quarries; here is also abundance of bog. A<br />

butter market is held on Tuesdays, and fairs are held<br />

at Knocklong on May 23rd and Oct. 1st, for fat cattle,<br />

sheep, and pigs; the October fair has a large show<br />

of good horses: fairs are also held at Knocktoran, on<br />

March 3rd, April 6th, July 29th, Nov. 1st, and Dec.<br />

20th. The Morning Star river, which bounds the pa-<br />

rish on the southern side, contains very fine trout. The<br />

principal seats are Castle Jane, the residence of Thad-<br />

deus R. Ryan, Esq.; and Hill Cottage, of the Rev.<br />

E. Graham. It is a vicarage, in the diocese of Emly,<br />

forming part of the union of Aney; the rectory is im-<br />

propriate in the Earl of Limerick. The tithes amount<br />

to £422. 12, 5., of which two-thirds are payable to the<br />

impropriator, and one-third to the vicar. There is a<br />

glebe of 6 acres. In the R. C. divisions it is the head<br />

of a union or district, and has chapels at Knocklong<br />

and Glenbrohane. There are two private schools, in<br />

which 120 children are educated. The ruins of Knock-<br />

long castle are on an eminence commanding very exten-<br />

sive views: it was the seat of the O’Hurleys, and near<br />

it are the remains of a church. In the grounds of Ryves<br />

castle is an ancient burial-ground, with a lofty and<br />

handsome vault for the Lowe family, who were formerly<br />

proprietors of the castle. The Clangibbon family also<br />

had here the castle of Ballinahinch.<br />

KNOCKMARK, a parish, in the barony of LOWER<br />

DEECE, county of MEATH, and province of LEINSTER,<br />

2½ miles (W. by N.) from Dunshaughlin, on the road to<br />

Trim; containing 724 inhabitants. It comprises 2776<br />

statute acres, as applotted under the tithe act; and in-<br />

cludes Warrenstown, the seat of J. Johnson, Esq. The<br />

living is a rectory and vicarage, in the diocese of Meath,<br />

united by act of council, in 1811, to the vicarage of<br />

Colmolyn, and held with the impropriate cures of Derry<br />

and Kiltale; it is in the gift of the Crown. The tithes<br />

amount to £200, and of the entire benefice to £399. 10.
