The parochial schools are aided by the chancellor of St.<br />

Patrick’s and the vicar; an infants’ school was esta-<br />

blished in 1835; and there are two national schools,<br />

and a dispensary. Lands producing about £41 per<br />

ann., of which £32 are expended on the schools, have<br />

been left in trust to the vicar and churchwardens for<br />

the benefit of the poor and for other pious purposes.<br />

Here are two strong ramparts, one of which, at the rear<br />

of the glebe-house, is called King William’s rampart.<br />

In the grounds of J. Savage, Esq., coins of the reigns of<br />

Jas. II. and Wm. and Mary have been found. Here is<br />

a well, dedicated to St. Patrick, slightly chalybeate, and<br />

once much celebrated: and there is an ancient cross in<br />

the churchyard. The vicarage was held for the few later<br />

years of his life by Dr. T. Parnell, the intimate associate<br />

of Swift, Addison, Pope, and other distinguished literary<br />

characters.<br />

FINGLAS, a parish, in the barony of CLONLISK,<br />

KING’S county, and province of LEINSTER, 2¼ miles<br />

(E. S. E.) from Moneygall, on the confines of the county of<br />

Tipperary; containing 271 inhabitants. It comprises only<br />

664 statute acres, as applottcd under the tithe act, and<br />

is a rectory, in the diocese of Killaloe, forming part of the<br />

union of Dunkerrin: the tithes amount to £50. 0. 6½.<br />

In the R. C. divisions it is part of the union or district<br />

of Moneygall,<br />

FINISH, or FEENISII, an island, in the parish of<br />

Moyrus, barony of BALLYNSHINCH, county of GAL-<br />

WAY, and province of CONNAUGHT, 17 miles (S. E.) from<br />

Clifden, near the entrance to Kilkerrm, bay on the<br />

western coast; containing 103 acres of land, held in<br />

common by the inhabitants: the population is returned<br />

with the parish.<br />

FINNOE, a parish, in the barony of LOWER OR-<br />

MOND, county of TIPPERARY, and province of MuN-<br />

STER, l½ mile (W. S. W.) from Burri.s-o-Kane, on one<br />

of the roads from Nen’agh to Portumna; containing<br />

1399 inhabitants, and comprising 4003 statute acres,<br />

of which about 800 are bog; the remainder being<br />

mostly pasture land. A lake, covering about 60 acres<br />

was drained about 10 years since; the land is reclaimed,<br />

and very productive, and the.state of agriculture gene-<br />

rally is much improved. Large quantities of shell marl<br />

are found at Springfield; and there is plenty of lime-<br />

stone for the purposes of agriculture, and for building.<br />

A small river, called Ballyfinboy, separates this parish<br />

from Burris-o-Kane, and empties itself into the Shannon<br />

at Castle Biggs. The principal seats are Finnoe House,<br />

the residence of T. Waller, Esq.; Ormond Cottage, of<br />

S. Waller, Esq.; Rodeen, of J. Falkiner, Esq.; Bell<br />

Park, of T. ‘Robinson, Esq.; the glebe-house, of the<br />

Rev. Pierce. Goold; and Bellgrove, the property of —<br />

Lennard, Esq. The living is a rectory and, vicarage, in<br />

the diocese of Killaloe, episcopally united in 1790 to the<br />

rectory and vicarage; of Cloghprior, and in the patron-<br />

age of the Bishop: the tithes amount to £217. The<br />

glebe-house, situated on a glebe of 4a. 4a. 3r. 26p., half a<br />

mile from the church, was built by aid of a gift of<br />

£400, and a loan of £400, in 1819, from the late Board<br />

of First Fruits; there is also a glebe of 28 acres, for<br />

which the incumbent pays £17 per annum. The church<br />

is a neat edifice, repaired and improved by aid of a loan<br />

of £323, in 1822, from the same Board. In the R. C.<br />

divisions the parish forms part of the union or district<br />

of Kilbarron; there is a chapel on the townland of Fir-<br />

grove, which is on the boundary of Finnoe and Kilbar-<br />

ron. About 70 children are taught in a private school.<br />

Ballyfinboy castle is a square tower in good preserva-<br />

tion. Many large elk horns have been found at Spring-<br />

field bog; and on that townland there is a strong chaly-<br />

beate spa, only partially used.<br />

FINOGII, or PHINAGH, a parish, in the barony<br />

of BUNRATTY, county of CLARE, and province of<br />

MUNSTER, 1½ mile (N. W.) from Six-mile-bridge, on<br />

the road to Ennis; containing 1021 inhabitants, and<br />

comprising 2632 statute acres, as applotted under the<br />

tithe act. The land is in general of good quality, and<br />

chiefly \mder tillage, and the state of agriculture is gra-<br />

dually improving. Fairs are held at Rossmanaher on<br />

Jan. 6th, May 10th, June 15th, Sept. l2th, and Oct.<br />

16th, mostly for sheep and pigs, Immediately adjoin-<br />

ing is Rossmanagher, the. seat of Lieut.-Col. Wm.<br />

O’Brien. The other seats are Deer Park, that of E,<br />

Mansell, Esq.; Springfield, of F. Morice, Esq.; and<br />

Streamstown, of,E. Wilson, Esq. The pariah is in the<br />

diocese of Killaloe; the rectory forms part of the union of<br />

Tomfinlough, and the vicarage, part of the union of<br />

Kilfinaghty. The tithes amount to £150, of which two-<br />

thirds arc payable to the rector, and the remainder to<br />

the vicar. In the R. C. divisions it is part of the union<br />

or district of Six-mile-bridge. About 30 children are,<br />

educated in a school under the superintendence of the<br />

parish priest. The ruins of the old church still remain<br />

in the burial-ground, and at Rossmanagher are those of<br />

an ancient castle.<br />

F1NT0NA, a post-town, in the parish of DONAGH-<br />

CAVEY, barony of CLOGHER, county of TYRONE, and<br />

province of ULSTER, 7 miles (S.) from Omagh, and<br />

97¾ (N. by W.) from Dublin, on the road from Ornagh<br />

to Enniskillen; containing 17 14 inhabitants. At. the<br />

plantation of ulster, by.Jas, I., this-: district was placed<br />

in. the lesser proportion of Fentonaigh, and was granted,<br />

in 161 I, to Sir Francis Willonghhy, who neglecting<br />

lo comply with the terms of the grant, the lands re-<br />

verted to the Crown. In 1614, ‘2000 acres. Were granted<br />

to John Leigh, Esq., who, prior to 1619, had built a<br />

bawn and house, in whieh he resided, and then com-<br />

menced building the town. It now consists. of one main<br />

and several smalller streets, very irregularly formed,<br />

comprising 354 houses, some of which are well built;<br />

and is.situated in a fertile vale, on both sides of the<br />

Fintona water, occupying an advantageous, position for<br />

trade, in a fine and improving country. ‘The only<br />

manufactures are the weaving of linen and the- making<br />

of spades. The. Market is on Friday, and is welll sup-<br />

plied with all kinds of provisions; and large quantites.<br />

of brown linens are sold every alternate Friday to the<br />

bleachers, who attend front a great distance. A fair is<br />

held on the 22nd of every month, which is large and well<br />

attended. Petty sessions are held on the second Tuesday<br />

in each month; and a court, leet. And baron for the manor<br />

of Castlemaine once a mouth, for the recovery of debts<br />

under 40s., by a.seneselial appointed by C. Eceles, Esq.,<br />

the lord of the manor. Here is a constabulary police<br />

station, for which most convenient barracks have been<br />

recently built, and another at Barr. The gentlemen’s<br />

seats in the neighbourhood are Ecelesville, that. Of C.<br />

Eceles, Esq.; Derrabard House, of S. Vesey, Esq.;<br />

Cavan House, of W. Dickson, Esq.; Cavan Lodgee, of<br />

C. R. Lucas, Esq.; and Dundiven glebe-house, of the Rev.
